23、他过去经常一天抽一包香烟。
He________ ________ ________a pack of cigarette a day.
24、 Since 2005, office workers in Japan have been allowed to wear T-shirts and shorts to work, instead of business suits and ties. Why? The answer is simple. The government is trying to reduce the use of air conditioners.
Although air conditioners make our lives easier in hot weather, they can be bad for the environment. The coolers use a great deal of electricity to function and add to the effects of global warming.
But it is a vicious (恶性的) cycle. As temperatures rise, there will be more need for air conditioning.
Pawel Wargocki, an expert at the Technical University of Denmark, told The New York Times: “The air conditioning causes a huge problem to global climate and energy use.” He added, “More and more air conditioners are used. It’s very dangerous.”
We can’t live with air conditioning. But the thing is, we can’t live without it either. Scientific studies have shown that if indoor temperatures are high in hot weather, people will suffer from certain health problems and have a lower productivity.
For example, when air conditioners were turned down in Japanese offices, the room temperature rose to 28 or higher. As a result, workers started getting headaches, and feeling sleepy.
They couldn’t give all their attention to work and their productivity dropped by 2 percent, which means they did 30 minutes less work each day, according to Shinichi Tanabe, a professor of architecture at Waseda University in Tokyo, Japan.
So the best way to balance our comfort with environmental awareness is to change our expectations. Most of the time, it’s not that the room is too hot, but that we are used to it being cooler.
“The temperature many Americans find most comfortable indoors in summer —21C— feels uncomfortable to most Europeans, who find it too cold.” said Michael Sivak, professor at a University of Michigan, US. He said it is because Europeans care more about the environment and are willing to accept a bit more heat in summer.
Also, we can try to change our daily behavior. Open the windows to let air in, for example. Turning on the air conditioner is not the only way to make us feel comfortable.
【1】What did the Japanese government do to reduce the use of air conditioners?
A. To allow the workers to wear T-shirts to work.
B. To stop the workers from using air conditioners.
C. To let people accept a bit more heat in summer.
D. To ask people to open windows to let air in.
【2】The writer probably agrees that ______.
A. most people will be sick without air conditioners
B. global warming is mainly caused by air conditioners
C. people have to be used to living without air conditioners
D. we should change our expectations to protect environment
【3】We can learn from the passage that ______.
A. Japanese office workers are less productive in summer
B. Americans care less about environment than Europeans
C. People in Denmark believe air conditioners are dangerous
D. Europeans accept a bit cooler than Americans in summer
【4】Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

B. Protect Environment: Is it time to focus on temperature?
C. Protect Environment: Shall we change our expectations?
D. Protect Environment: Shall we stop using air conditioners?
25、 A blog posted Dec 7, 2018 at 12:17 PM by Alanna Mallon Alanna Mallon is a Cambridge City Councilor.
Each year in November, I receive a lot of emails and texts from friends who want to volunteer with their families on Thanksgiving as a way to give back. I also field phone calls from organizations who want to donate ( 捐赠 ) to local programs that provide Thanksgiving meals.
However, as an official who still works in the nonprofit sector (非盈利部门), I also feel deeply anxious (焦急的) because I know the other 51 weeks of the year, these key programs that provide food to residents (居民) in need are eager for both volunteers and donations. Hunger is a year round problem, and each week volunteers are the necessary part to make sure that programs are able to serve the community.
At Food For Free, we depend on about 100 volunteers per week, and each of those volunteers is extremely important to providing fresh, healthy food to people in the Greater Boston area who need it. School children who take backpacks of food home on Fridays, community college students who depend on our Family Meals program to support their healthy growth, elderly and disabled residents who receive twice monthly deliveries of food to their doors through our Home Delivery program, they all depend on us making sure enough volunteers show up to do the work.
These volunteers don't show up in your social media system, they don't win prizes and no one writes about them in the local newspapers. But they are heroes. And you can be too. If everyone made a promise to volunteer once a month, or even once a quarter, I know that we could reduce some of the anxiety these organizations feel, as a more trust-worthy volunteer network allows them to focus on helping people, not filling volunteer positions.
Here is a list of a few organizations who are doing important work in Cambridge to make sure the food to be safe. Offer your time to an organization, they will be deeply grateful, and I am quite sure that you will feel pretty good about yourself too.

26、It’s that time of year again. The lead-up(前奏)to everyone’s favorite holiday — Christmas!
Usually Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, marks the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. On this day all the stores open early and offer the best discounts(折扣)to their customers. Interestingly, people push to buy the cheapest products, just a few hours after giving thanks for the things they have.
Usually televisions and laptops are the most popular products on Black Friday. People are willing to wait for hours for their favorite stores to open because they want very much to get the items they need.
This year I decided to go out and grab a bargain(特价商品)at one of these sales, just to see what it is like. After a delicious Thanksgiving meal, I drove to the mall around half an hour before the stores opened. Already there were people lining up and waiting outside. Some had even prepared themselves with tents and hot chocolate to stay warm in the cold weather. I entered the store, but I wasn’t looking for anything specific. I just walked around the store checking out the prices. I bought some cheap clothes, while other people were loading their shopping carts(手推车)with tons of different items.
Some people come to the Black Friday sales for the products, and others come to enjoy the experience. However, some stores can be a little dangerous during Black Friday. Every year there are always some cases of people fighting over the small number of goods. This year Wal-Mart learned its lesson and made the sales last longer. They made sure customers came for the first hour, got what they wanted and then left quickly.

The changes in our lives using 5G(使用5G给我们生活带来的变化)
Do you know 5G? It is the fifth generation(代)of mobile network technology. These new networks are coming.
China just issued commercial licenses(发放商用牌照)for 5G on June 6. This means that China’s telecom companies were soon able to offer 5G networks for mobile phone users.
Each mobile network generation is faster and more powerful than the one before it. 1G let us talk to each other. 2G let us send messages. 3G gave us data and the Internet. And 4G made all of these things faster. What’s special about 5G?
5G has a very short delay between sending and receiving information. Now, 4G takes about 100 to 200 milliseconds(毫秒) to send and receive data. But 5G will get it down to 1 millisecond or less—this is almost real-time.
This big change will not only make our mobile Internet faster, but also deeply change our lives. Read on to find out how.
5G+ entertainment(娱乐)
5G networks are about 100 times faster than 4G. This means you can download a movie in seconds using 5G.
Also, virtual reality(VR) games will become more popular with 5G. The short delay of 5G will make the games feel even more real.
5G+ transportation
5G will also bring us safer self-driving cars. These cars can send signals(信号) to each other. They also talk to traffic lights and road sensors(传感器). 5G will allow cars to react even faster than human drivers.
5G+ smart homes
5G also makes the Internet of things possible. Internet of things is a large network that connects everything to the Internet. Smart homes are part of it.
For example, your toaster can automatically(自动地) start making breakfast after your alarm rings. And if its sensor feels the air becoming dry, a smart sprinkler could water your plants by itself.

Making friends is a skill. Like most skills, you can improve it if you are patient. If you want to meet people and make friends, you must be willing to take action.
You must first go where there are people. You 【1】 (not make) friends if you stay at home alone. Joining a club or a group, talking to those who like the same things as you do is much【2】 (easy). Or join someone in some activities. Many people are nervous when【3】 (talk) to new people. After all, meeting【4】 (strange) means seeing the unknown people. And it's human nature to feel a bit 【5】 (pleasant) about the unknown. Most of fears about dealing with new people come from doubts (怀疑) about ourselves. We imagine other people are judging us—finding us too tall or too short, too this or too that. But don't forget that they must be feeling the same way. Try 【6】 (accept) yourself as you are, and make others 【7】 (feel) at home. You'll all feel more comfortable. Be brave even if you don't feel that way when you go to a new place. Walk tall and straight, look _【8】 __(direct) at other people and smile. If you see someone you'd like【9】 (speak) to, say something. Don't wait for the other person to start a conversation. Just 【10】 (meet) someone new does not mean that you'll make friends with that person. Friendship is based on mutual (相互的) likings and "give and take". It takes time and effort (精力)for us 【11】 (develop) friendship. And there are things that 【12】 (stop) a new friendship from growing.
29、 Stephen Glenn is a famous scientist who has made great medical development. When ______why he was so much more creative than the normal person, he replied that it all came from an experience with his mom. When his mom came in, instead of shouting at him or punishing him, she said, "Robert, what a great and wonderful mess you have made! I've ______ seen such a sea of milk. Well, now that the damage has been done, would you please get down and ______ in the milk for a while before we clean it up?" So happily he did. After that, his mom said, "Robert, Whenever you make such a mess like this, you'll have to clean it up and get everything back to its proper ______. His mom then said, "Robert, you've just had a ______ experiment about how to carry a big milk bottle effectively with two tiny hands. Now go to the sink to fill the bottle with ______ and see if you can discover a way to carry it safely." Immediately Robert learned that he could ______ it if he held the bottle at the ______ near the lip with both hands.
How wonderful a lesson! The famous scientist stressed that it was then and there that he came to know that ______ were just opportunities for learning something new, which is what scientific experiments are all about.
