  • 24、   The days of having to carry a phone charger(充电器) everywhere could soon be over. Researchers from America have made great progress in getting energy from human motion(运动). They say smartphones could get enough power just by the motion of fingers on the screen.

The low-cost device(装置) has already been tested in an American university. Scientists successfully showed an LED touch screen, a total of 20 LED lights and a keyboard, all with a simple touching or pressing motion and without the help of a battery.

“What I predicted is the possibility of not having to charge your smartphone for a whole week, for example, because that energy will be produced by your motion,” said one of the researchers.

The completed device is as thin as a piece of paper. Electrical energy is created when you press it. The device used to power the LED lights is the size of a hand while the device used to power the touch screen is as small as a finger.

The device will become more powerful when folded. Each time you fold it, the energy you create will be doubled. You can start with a large device, but when you fold it once, and again, and again. It's now much smaller, but it has more energy. It may be small enough to put in a specially made heel(脚后跟) of your shoe so it can create power each time your heel knocks the ground. The researchers are also developing technology that would send the power produced from the heel strike to an earphone.

1According to researchers from America, smartphones will get power from .

A.the moving of fingers B.a new kind of battery

C.the moving of heads D.the solar energy

2How long may the new way keep your smartphone powered?

    A.One day. B.Two days. C.One week. D.Half a month.

3How large is the device used to power the touch screen?

A.The size of a book. B.The size of a finger.

C.The size of a sheet of paper. D.The size of a hand.

4What does the passage mainly tell us?

A.A new kind of smartphone. B.A new kind of LED lights.

C.A kind of LED touch screen. D.A new way to gain energy.

  • 25、   My elder brother Steve gave me important lessons in values that helped me grow into an adult after my father died when I was six years old.

Steve taught me to face the results of my behavior. Once when I returned in tears from a Saturday baseball game, it was Steve who took some time to ask me what happened. When I told him that my baseball had flown through Mrs. Holt’s basement window, breaking the glass with a crash, Steve encouraged me to confess to her. After all, I was supposed to be playing in the park down Fifth Street and not in the path between buildings. Although my voice shook as I explained to Mrs. Holt, I offered to pay for the broken window from my pocket money.

I also learned from Steve that personal property (财产) is a sacred(神圣的) thing. After I found a shiny pen in my fifth-grade classroom, I wanted to keep it. Then Steve explained that it might be important to the loser although it had little value (价值). He also reminded (提醒) me of how sad I was when I lost the small dog my father made from a piece of cheap wood. At last, I returned the pen to my teacher, Mrs. Davids. I still remembered the smell of her perfume as she patted me on my shoulder.

Yet of all the lessons Steve gave me, his respect for life is the most vivid in my mind. When I was twelve, I killed an old brown bird in the garden with a gun. Excited with my accuracy, I asked Steve to come from the house to take a look. I shall never forget the way he stood for a long moment and stared at the bird on the ground. Then in a dead, quiet voice, he asked, “Did it hurt you first, Mark?” I didn’t know what to answer. He continued with his eyes firm, “Even if it hurts you first, you should think a long time and then decide whether you will kill it or not.” I really felt terrible then, but that moment stands out as the most important lesson my brother taught me.

1How many lessons Steve gave to Mark are mentioned in the passage?

    A.One. B.Two. C.Three. D.Four.

2From the second paragraph, we know when Mark confessed to Mrs. Holt, ________.

A.he felt surprised B.he felt excited C.he felt frightened D.he felt delighted

3The underlined word “confess” probably means ________.

    A.apologize B.explain C.complain D.argue

4According to the writer, which was the most important lesson Steve taught his young brother?

A.Respect for living things. B.Responsibility for one’s behavior.

C.The value of honesty. D.Care for the property of others.

5Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A.Mark was a boy when he wrote this passage.

B.Mark lost the small dog his father bought somewhere.

C.When a living thing hurts you, you should kill it.

D.Even if a living thing hurts you, you should not kill it at once.

6What’s the best title of the passage?

A.My Guide in Childhood B.My Lovely Brother

C.My Early Memory D.My Sweet Childhood

World Sleep Day, on 21st March, was created to bring attention to the growing number of sleep problems. Sleep is a natural part of human life, but many people in the modern world don’t realize it’s very important. As a result, sleep problems are quite common.

In 2011, scientists at the University of Athens in Greece did a survey of over 35,000 people in 10 countries around the world, including China, Belgium and South Africa. Among the people, 24 percent said that they did not sleep well, 31.6 percent were diagnosed(诊断) with insomnia(失眠). In addition, 30.7 percent of them have visited doctors for help with sleep problems and 11.6 percent said that they felt very sleepy during the day.

The survey found that many people suffer the effects of poor quality sleep, some examples can’t fall asleep and often wake up in the middle of the night. The main reasons of the problems are pressure(压力) from school or work and a fast pace(节奏) of life, but noise pollution and light pollution also affect sleep and cause poor quality sleep. The survey also found that large numbers of people find it hard to sleep at night. The short term effects of this are tiredness and trouble concentrating(专心). If this happens for a long time, the risk of gaining weight and having a heart attack may increase.

There are many things you can do to improve the quality of your sleep. First, you should have regular sleep habits. Try to go to bed and wake up around the same time each day. You also need to make your bedroom a cool, dark, quiet place to sleep so that heat, light and noise do not disturb you. At night, you should also avoid things that contain caffeine, such as chocolate, coffee, tea and many soft drinks, as caffeine may keep you from sleeping.

Getting a good night's sleep is important for everyone. By following the advice above, you can rest better at night and work better during the day.

  • 27、   Divided into two groups, the students were busy in a kitchen at the High Point Community Center in Seattle, US. Instructor Asia Faircloth taught one group how to cook vermicelli (意式细面) bowls with chicken. The other group joined Jacob Alhadeff to practice new skills with knives.

The center’s four-week cooking course was centered on cooking and food justice. To teach more people about the importance of having nutritious food, the city had students from low-income families through social media. Each student received 100 dollars (700 yuan) at the end of the course.

“Low-income people are more likely to feel the effects of food injustice,” Alhadeff said. “So providing cooking instruction and putting money back in the pockets of our community members seemed like a no-brainer (容易做的决定).”

Alhadeff and Faircloth started the course not only to teach kids how to cook, but also to encourage them to think more deeply about food. They were shown how to connect personal choices with the economic cost of obesity, climate change and global food supplies.

Tahir Adams and Najah Goodrich, two juniors at Seattle Lutheran High School, joined the classes. They talked about how farmers have a hard time putting food on their own kitchen tables while growing fresh products for the rest of the country. They were proud of the new skills and recipes they learned.

“We started with more personal things, then looked at the bigger, global view ... like, how climate change is related to food,” Adams said. “It can be really bad when droughts turn places into actual deserts and droughts cause civil unrest.”

1What do we know about the cooking course?

A.It focused only on cooking. B.It was held in Seattle, US.

C.Its students were from wealthy families. D.Each student got 100 dollars at the beginning of the course.

A.explains the standards for choosing students B.complains that community members are stupid

C.proves that it’s a good idea to give students free money D.explains why the course provides cooking instruction

3In the course, students were ________.

A.taught how to reduce obesity B.taught to focus on problems about food safety

C.taught to make their own choices D.encouraged to think more deeply about food

4What can we conclude from what Adams and Goodrich said?

A.They learned nothing from the course. B.They learned recipes from farmers.

C.The course widened their views on food. D.The course taught them how to solve droughts.
