Chinese people often think of a rainy spring as a rather romantic time to travel as the scenery seems to be more picturesque when it rains. If you are making a plan for your spring trip, Shaoxing is the place to go.

Shaoxing lies in the south of the Yangtze River Delta (长江三角洲) in Zhejiang Province. You can take a flight from Shenzhen to Hangzhou and then a bus to Shaoxing. You can also take a direct train to Shaoxing from Shenzhen Railway Station.

Shaoxing is one of the most famous historical cities in China. It is known for its rich culture, and as a city of bridges, tea and scholars. A number of great scholars either were born here or spent an important part of their life in the city, including the great writer Lu Xun.

With a history of more than 1000 years, the area has many attractions, like the houses of famous historical people. In addition, the natural landscape alone is a good reason for a visit. During the rainy months of spring, visitors often take Wupeng Boats to enjoy its natural beauty.

  • 25、   I left my hometown in London last year and now I have enjoyed working in this small city in China. Learning a foreign language opens you up to the culture and history of a country. So in order to know more about China, I started to learn Chinese.

But at times, I found myself in funny situations. When I greeted strangers in China, they began to talk a lot and very fast. They asked me questions about everything. But all I could do was to look at them with a blank face. I had no idea what they were talking about. Were they just being kind, funny or impolite? Many people want to make friends with me. But I am a bit upset when I find out the reason why they need a foreign friend. They say they want to practice their English. I don’t need friends like this. I like friends to share my feelings and ideas with.

However, the more Chinese I learn, the more similarities I find it has with English. In English, thick-skinned is to describe a person who doesn’t care for criticism (批评). I was surprised to find that houlianpi in Chinese means the same. And both languages share some common idioms (习语). For example, “look on with folded arms” means xiushoupangguan, and “burn the boats” is similar to pofuchenzhou.

I’m still on my journey to learn Chinese. I believe that sometimes you have the most fun on a journey.

    1The writer comes from __________.

    A.the UK B.the USA C.Australia D.Canada

2Many Chinese want to make friends with the writer because__________  .

A.they are interested in Western culture

B.they want a partner to practice English with

C.they are willing to share feelings and ideas with him

D.they want to help foreigners with their Chinese

3The underlined word “similarities” means “__________” in Chinese.

    A.相似点 B.不同点 C.规律性 D.重要性

    4A thick-skinned person may __________.

A.be very strong and seldom fall ill

B.like to criticize others for their mistakes

C.talk a lot and speak fast

    D.feel OK when he’s criticized

5If there would be a paragraph before the last paragraph of the text, it most probably would be about __________.

A.the reasons why he wants to learn Chinese

B.the similarities Chinese and English share

C.the differences between Chinese and English

D.the importance of learning Chinese and English

  • 26、The Amazing Brain

Sleep. It’s something we spend about a third of our lives doing, but do any of us really understand what it’s all about?

We all know based on our own experience that when we sleep, it clears our minds, and when we don’t sleep, it leaves our minds murky (昏沉沉的). But when we still haven’t understood why sleep has this amazing function for the mind.

Recently biologists have found that sleep may actually be a kind of design solution to some of the brain’s most basic needs, the way that brain meets the high demands and the narrow margins (范围) that set it apart from all the other organs (器官) of the body. The brain has a large pool of clean, clear fluid (流体) called cerebrospinal fluid. Biologists call it the CSF. The CSF fills the space that surrounds the brain, and wastes from inside the brain make their way out to the CSF, which gets the waste into the blood. What was surprising to them was that the fluid on the outside of the brain didn’t stay on the outside. Instead, the CSF goes into and through the brain along the outsides of the blood vessels (血管), it was actually helping to clear away and clean the waste from the spaces between the brain’s cells (细胞). This only happens in the sleeping brain.

Recent research suggests that what’s happening is that when the brain is awake and is at its most busy, it puts off clearing away the waste from the spaces between its cells until later. When we go to sleep, it gets into a kind of cleaning mode to clear away the waste from the spaces between its cells.

We go to sleep every single night, but our brains never rest. While our body is still and our mind is off walking in dreams somewhere. Like our housework, it’s dirty and a thankless job, but it’s also important. In your house, if you stop cleaning your kitchen for a month, your home will become completely unlivable very quickly. But in he brain, the situation is much more serious because when it comes to cleaning the brain, it is the very health and function of the mind and the body that’s at stake. That is why understanding these very basic housekeeping functions of the brain today may prevent and treat diseases of the mind tomorrow.

1What does the underlined phrase “at stake” in the last paragraph mean?

    A. in a healthy situation

    B. in a dangerous situation

    C. in an amazing situation

    D. in an unlivable situation

2What can we learn from the passage?

    A. Sleeping makes our brain feel murky.

    B. The CSF can clean the waste in our brain.

    C. Our brain can clean the waste at any time.

    D. Sleeping makes our brain have a good rest.

3What is the main purpose of writing this passage?

    A. To teach us how to have a good sleep.

    B. To show the new research of our brain.

    C. To introduce how CSF works in our brain.

    D. To tell us the importance of sleeping.

  • 27、Although I had left school against the advice of my teacher, I had, without telling anyone, tried to continue my studies in literature at evening classes. It was a tiresome walk from one end of the city to another and to sit among adults was uninteresting. I was the youngest in the class, so the friendship I knew at school was absent, I put up with it for a short period. It was too long a walk on cold winter’s nights and it was hard to put my heart into Shakespeare with wet shoes and trousers. So I continued reading books and started writing poetry at home.

By chance, I won some prizes and rewards for literature. A young woman from a TV company came to the college one day. She wanted to make a short film about me, to which I said, “No, I couldn’t do that.” Not that I had any real excuse, I was just frightened. In the end she advised me that I should do it the following day.

So I did. They made a short film of me reading one of my poems and I became more interested in literature than ever. I wondered what I should do after this, and decided some weeks later that I could not imagine myself spending the rest of my days dealing with machines. So one evening, I hesitatingly(支吾其词地) told my parents that I wanted to return to school. They wanted to know if I was sure, if I knew what it meant and whether I realized that if I gave up my job training, it would be very difficult to get a good job. But nothing could stop me, and they asked about the matter on future.

【1】Which of the following has most probably been discussed in the paragraphs above this text?

    A. The writer’s unhappy childhood.

    B. The poor teaching quality of the writer’s school.

    C. The writer’s leaving school against his teacher’s advice.

    D. Whether it was worth leaving school for job training.

【2】The writer did NOT feel comfortable at the evening school because __________.

    A. he found it difficult to make friends with his classmates

    B. he had to walk a long distance to the evening school

    C. he could not put his heart into reading books after he was caught in the rain

    D. all of the above

【3】 After his success, he __________.

    A. decided to get a good job

    B. decided to continue his studies in literature at the evening school

    C. decided to return to the school he once left

    D. began to feel very important and proud

六、完型填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 29、If I could go back in time

One of the most popular topics in the history of science fiction has been the idea of time travel.

When I was a child, I often dreamed about a time machine that would allow me to“save” certain moments of my life, so that in case I failed to do something, I could always “load” my life from a checkpoint. As I grew _______, my life experiences gradually became more diverse (多样的). In many situations, I had no idea how to act properly, what decisions to make, what path to follow; _______, I made mistakes. While many of my actions back then turned out for the good in the future, some mistakes provided many painful moments for me and people around me. Mistakes are certain to happen, but they allow us to learn, _______ ourselves, and drive us to change for the better—and still sometimes I would like to jump into a time machine, go back a couple of years ago, and make _______.

Would I try to make other people act in a different way? I think no. I would rather _______myself about the awaiting consequences (后果) of my most careless decisions. I would talk to a long-haired teen holding his first cigarette and tell him: “Don't do that.” So many warnings I would give to myself that sometimes I think: was it really me who did this and that?

Having a time machine would make life easier. Perhaps, it is true. But what I think more often now is that living without this teaches us responsibility, about oneself, about important people to us, about one's own life. And besides, our _______make us what we are today. Today I am a person leading a healthy, active lifestyle; I try to live each day to fullness in order to _______nothing.

If I could go back in time, I would try to make my _______better. This is what our parents always try to do when we are children. But you know what? I am glad that no time machine has been invented.
