Every year movies festivals around the world present awards for best director. Some of this festival began ten years ago, and their list of winners for best director are quite long. However, among all the names of winners, it's not easy to find the names of female directors.
The Cannes Film festival is the first major movie festival to name female director as best director of the year in 1961, A Russian director called Yuliya Solnsteva won at Cannes. Since then, some movies directed by female directors have one Best Picture. But no female directors have one Best Director at Cannes.
The Best Director award at the Berlin International Film Festival is called the Silver Bear award. Only one woman has succeeded in winning it so far. She was Astrid Henning-Jensen from Denmark. Over her career, she directed more than 20 movies and in 1979, she won the Silver Bear for her movie Winterborn.
It is the most difficult for female directors to win Best Director in the Oscars in the USA. In fact, since the Oscars began in 1929, only four women have ever been nominated for Best Director. The first woman to actually win this award was Kathryn Bigelow for directing The Hurt Locker. She received the award in 2010.
Over the years, women have directed many wonderful movies. People like them even though they don’t win awards. And they make nice films. For example, Nora Ephron directed the great romantic-comedy Sleepless in Seattle and Vicky Jenson directed a wonderful animated movie Shrek.

Music has always been an important part of Chinese people’s life. People enjoy listening to music at home and in concerts halls. As time goes by, music changes.
Traditional music is part of our culture, so it often stays with us for a long time. Many of the traditional Chinese songs have been around for many years. Young musicians learn songs from older musicians and the music changes only very little. Modern Chinese music, which is loved by many young people, however, is mainly pop music. That means the songs will be popular for a short time and then replaced by new songs. Today’s musicians write new songs every year and we hear new songs on the radio every day.
Before radio and TV were invented, music could only be heard live — that is you had to go places where musicians gave performances. The best musicians were very busy, so it was difficult and often expensive to hear really good music. For most people, the best chance to hear good music was during a festival or at a wedding. Today, people hear music all the time. Radio and TV play songs every day and night and you can even hear music played on the street.
One thing that hasn’t changed very much is what the songs are about. Both modern and traditional Chinese songs are about love and life. Some songs tell stories about past and some are about the news or the future. All of the songs have something to do with what it means to be a human being.
Music, traditional or modern, Chinese or international, seems to be a world language that everybody can understand and enjoy. Music changes and styles come and go, but nothing changes our love for good music.

26、When you don’t have any money, can you get anything to eat? Students in Class10, Grade 9 at Mountain and Lake Middle School in Chengdu, have their ways. They give out flyers(传单), draw portraits (人物素描)and work as waiters.
The class, working in eight groups, finished the activity----Experiencing Life for Seven Hours, on March 18. “I found students waste their food in the dining hall,” the class teacher, Den Yong said, “So I held this activity to help them understand how hard it is to make money.”
Jiang Hui, 15, and his group members stood in the streets giving out flyers for about two hours and got the money for their lunch. Then they worked as waiters in a pizza restaurant---cleaning the floor and toilet and getting food for guests. “We were busy all the time, so we were terribly exhausted(精疲力竭的) after the day’s hard work.”said Jiang. “We each got a pizza as a prize, which tasted much better than one I ate with my parents before.”
When Xie Xi’s group didn’t make any money in three hours, the members became nervous about their lunch. The 14-year-old girl came up with the idea of drawing portraits to sell, “I sold four portraits and one tourist even paid us 100 yuan for his portrait,” said Xie.
Xie realized that life is really hard. “We have to work hard to get the money to pay for even a simple meal.” Xie said, “We must value the happy life today.”

27、A wise man was visiting a village with his students. He found a group of family members shouting in anger at each other. He turned to his students and asked: “Why do people shout in anger at each other?”
His students thought for a while, and one of them said: “Because when we lose our calm, we shout.”
“But, why should you shout when the other person is just next to you? You can just as well tell him what you have to say in a soft manner,” said the wise man.
Students gave some other answers but none were any good.
“When two people are angry at each other, their hearts become distanced,” the wise man explained. “To cover that distance they must shout to be able to hear each other. The angrier they are, the louder they will have to shout to hear each other and cover that great distance.”
The wise man then gave an example: “What happens when two people fall in love? They don’t shout at each other but talk softly because their hearts are very close. When they love each other even more, what happens? They don’t need to talk. They only look at each other and that’s all. That is how close two people are when they love each other.”
