24、 Great books can make us knowledgeable and keep our minds growing. But great books are also hard books. How can we go through with great books? Mortimer J. Adler offers us a key to them in his book How to read a book.
Mortimer J. Adler(1902-2001), an American educator and popular writer, was famous as a leading editor(编者) of Encyclopedia Britannica《大英百科全书》in1974.Also, he set up the Great Books of the Western World program and tried to bring great books to common people.
To increase readers reading skill and help them to be active readers, Mortimer wrote How to read a book. It was first published in 1940 which became a bestseller in America and then it was completely rewritten in 1972. Now, it is one of the most successful guides for the general readers.
In this book, Mortimer first explains why we read. He points out that there is a big difference between reading for information and reading for understanding. He also shows that modern media (传媒) have taken much time we once spent reading books. Perhaps we know more about the world than we used to, but it may be questioned that whether modern media has much improved our understanding of the world. Meanwhile, Mortimer thinks there are four levels of reading, from the elementary(初级的) reading to the comparative reading.
Anyway, How to read a book is useful. But the fact is another story. It's said that 70 percent of the readers fail to finish reading it and 90 percent of the reader don't act in the way suggested in the book.
