四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、   Can you swim? No? Well. How can you learn to swim? I think the best way is to go into the water and learn. I'm afraid you'll never learn to swim just by reading books about swimming or looking at others swimming. It's the same with the English study. You must practice, practice and practice.

Listening and speaking are very important for beginners. The children in English-speaking countries first listen to others. Then they try to imitate and speak. You can listen to English programs on the radio. You may just understand a few words. It doesn't matter. Just be relaxed, and try to catch every word. Somebody may be a good listener. but he dare not speak. He's afraid of making mistakes. You know we sometimes make mistakes when we speak Chinese. Don't be afraid. You must be brave. If you really want to learn English well, you must try to speak with everyone as long as he knows English. Whether you know him or not is not important. Remember, the more you speak, the fewer mistakes you'll make.

Reading and writing are more important for senior school students. First, you must choose the books you're interested in. A lot of reading will improve your language sense. This is the most important.

Keep an English diary. You can also write English articles. You may even post them to English magazines. Don't be afraid of failure. Failure is the mother of success.

Easier said than done. Well, just do more practice from now on. I'm sure you'll learn English well in this way.

1You can learn to swim by _______.

A.reading books about it B.looking at others swimming

C.having lessons on it D.going into thewater and learning

2You should learn English by ________.

A.listening and speaking B.reading and writing

    C.both A and B D.swimming

3What should you do with mistakes when you speak?

    A.Don't make mistakes. B.Study hard.

C.Try not to speak English. D.Don't be afraid.

4What's more important for senior school students?

    A.Listening. B.Speaking.

    C.Reading and writing. D.Learning.

5You can listen to English ________ according to the passage.

A.by going abroad B.on the radio

    C.every minute D.now and then

  • 26、Success by failure

I had failed again. It was the day of the big marathon. I had decided three years ago to train for the half-marathon event and take home a medal. There I sat, in front of my TV, while I watched others cross the finish line. It was just another in a long string(串) of failures. I had never met a single weight loss or fitness goal and I was majoring in the art of failing.

We are a family of exploration and often plan active vacations. It seemed that on every vacation I was the one who couldn’t go the distance. Each time I urged(催促) my family, “Go on without me. Bring me lots of pictures and videos. I’ll be fine just sitting here taking in the view.” I lied. Sick of being left behind, I decided that it would never happen again. Sure I was in my 50s, but surely there was still hope for me. I always spent weeks walking to prepare for our active vacations. I had lost weight many times. I just always seemed to fail to get where I needed to be.

But this time I would do something different. I was going to walk a half marathon. Surely I would lose weight and get in sharp if I could complete over 12 miles in four hours. Besides, this would be training. Training sounded cooler than diet and exercise. I was revved up and ready to go. I bought the proper gear(装备),checked out what type of drinks would be handed out at the marathon and prepared a lot. I had a plan!

Now two years later, there I sat, watching thousands of people of all ages succeed where I had failed. I walked out, angry with myself, sat down and had myself a pity party. I was a master at the art of pity parties, having a great deal of experience in holding them. What was my problem? Where was I going wrong? I stopped and considered each failure, one by one. I made some very interesting discoveries.

I had failed to climb to the top of that Mayan pyramid, but I did climb it and stood on those ancient stones. I had failed to meet a single weight loss goal and yet I had lost 43 pounds. I couldn’t walk 12 miles in four hours, but I could walk 12 miles.

All my failures were sounding like a success story. This time I was giving thanks. I was thankful that I had been given the spirit of failure because failure meant that I was trying, that I didn’t give up. I decided that I would be crossing the finish line next year.

【1】What can you learn from the passage?

    A. The writer didn’t lose any weight in the end.

    B. The writer didn’t climb the Mayan pyramid.

    C. The writer didn’t take part in the big marathon.

    D. The writer didn’t have holidays with his family.

【2】What does the underlined sentence I was revved up.” Probably mean?

    A. I got excited.  B. I felt moved.

    C. I was pushed.   D. I was chosen.

【3】Which words can best describe the writer in the passage?

    A. Clever and friendly   B. Interesting and proud

    C. Humorous and hopeful. D. King and strong-willed.

【4】The writer probably agrees that   .

    A. one should never give up half way

    B. setting a goal is the key to success

    C. one can learn by making and correcting mistakes

    D. trying but failing to reach the goal is still meaningful

  • 27、   " Were the birds on the ice ducks or geese () ?" Cruz, 11 , and Anthony, 12couldn't agree. There was only one way to find out. So on a cold January evening, the two friends took a risk onto the frozen(冻结的) lake near their homes.

"First,, we threw a stone onto the ice to test it. We thought it would hold our weight. Then we stepped on it," Cruz said. Anthony went first.  He took a few steps, then... He fell through the seemingly frozen ice!

Cruz rushed to help his friend. The lake "ate" him, too.  Cruz managed to lift himself out of the freezing water and onto some ice. He then tried to work his way toward Anthony. But the ice didn't hold, and he fell in again. This time, he couldn't get out.

The boys were up to their necks in icy water and quickly losing feeling in their arms and legs. Cruz had a sense that he was going to die.

Anthony's older sister had seen all this and started shouting for help. John Lavin, a neighbor driving nearby heard her.  He quickly pulled over.  He caught a nearby float(浮板) , kicked off his shoes. and ran into the water, clearing his way through the ice with his free hand. "It was kind of a ' Hulk smash’”   Lavin later joked.

Lavin made his way to pull the boys back to land. They were taken to hospital immediately. The doctor said their five-minute stay in the water made their body temperature drop nearly ten degrees.
