24、Many companies use guards and expensive alarm systems (报警系统) to protect their property (财产). Soon a new kind of protection will be used—robots. Engineers have been working on the first mobile robots for businesses. The robots will patrol (巡逻) factories, warehouses (仓库), and museums at night.
The mobile robots will move around slowly on wheels. They will be able to find people through walls and pick up sounds, such as breaking glass. They can be fixed with loud sirens (警笛) to frighten thieves, or radios to signal police or guards.
To protect a building, a robot will have to move around without knocking into the walls. Information about the building will have to be stored in the robot’s small, built-in computer. A floor map could be programmed into the computer’s memory, for example.
A mobile robot will not be able to do everything. Unlike human guards, it will not be able to climb stairs, open doors, or move along rough ground. It won’t be able to tell the difference between friends and enemies. Because of that, people will have to be barred from the area it patrols.
One kind of mobile robot will be able to “sense” whether a chair or box has been moved and go around it. This robot will also judge size well enough so that it won’t send an alarm if a cat crosses the room. And if someone tries to steal this robot, it will sound a loud, painful siren. The three-foot-tall robot will be hard to be stolen anyway. It will weigh about 200 pounds.
US companies pay almost $10 billion a year to protect their property with alarm systems and human guards. Mobile robots may be cheaper.
【1】Why are robots of this kind called mobile robots?
A. Because they are able to climb stairs.
B. Because they are able to send an alarm.
C. Because they can open doors.
D. Because they can move around slowly on wheels.
【2】Where will a robot get directions for moving around a building?
A. From a human guard. B. From a built-in computer.
C. From another robot. D. From radio signals.
【3】The underlined word “barred” means “ ”.
A. protected B. allowed C. marked D. prevented

25、
You have to be careful when throwing away wet waste, which may include food or other kinds of rubbish. Maybe these kinds of waste have made a big mess when you’ve thrown them away before.
Shi Yuan, 14, from Shanghai Wenlai Middle School, has made a special bag to solve this problem. The plastic bag has a piece of adhesive tape (粘贴带).When one end of the tape is open, the bag can be turned upside down. You can hold the bottom end and easily throw wet waste into a bin.
Shi came up with the idea after an unpleasant experience in which he got wet waste all over his trousers while throwing it away. He found that many other people had the same problem. He decided to solve this problem and invented his special bag.
He first thought about using a gunny sack (麻布袋) to make the bag or placing a bag on his rubbish bin. But neither of these ideas worked. So he decided to just create his own rubbish bag. “I didn’t want to put any extra burden (额外的负担) on the bag, so I used adhesive tape,” Shi said.
However, the first bag was a one-off (一次性) product and wasn’t good for the environment. So Shi kept on improving his bag. He remembered reading about the adhesive used for Post-it notes (便利贴). Shi thought this weak glue could be used for the adhesive tape and allow the rubbish bag to be reused.
Shi’s bag has become popular in many communities. Many people think it’s very convenient. He has already sold 2 million bags online. His father is quite proud of him.
“Kids like to play. Shi just changed the way he plays and put in more effort to find a way to make life easier,” Shi’s father said.

There is a famous English saying“You are what you eat”,and it means what you put in your mouth will become part of you. Many experts(专家)useitto tell people it’s important to have a good eating habit. For example, too much sweet food makes a person overweight. To avoid being fat, kids are told to keep off sweet food. However,a team of American scientists have discovered something new about eating sweet food.
“When we say some people‘sweet’,we mean they are kind and friendly to us.Perhaps this word can help us learn more about people’s feelings and acts,”said Brian Meier,a scientist from the study team.“Taste is something we experience every day. What we have done is to find whether we can know someone’s character and behavior depending on their taste.”
In one of their experiments, college students were asked questions about their character—whether, for example, they were soft-hearted or not. Then they were asked to make a list of their favorite food.According to their answers, the scientists found that the students who liked sweet food were nicer.
In their another experiment, the scientists found that people who preferred sweet food such as cookies and chocolate were more willing to help other people in need, and those who ate non-sweet food such as chips weren’t.For example, people with a sweet tooth were more likely to volunteer to clean up their city, visit sick children in the hospital and so on.
The result of the experiments is that people’s helpfulness or being nice has something to do with their taste for sweet food.So eating sweet food is a useful way to make people nice and helpful.Next time, try some ice cream.

27、 Sometimes, I doubt whether there is any love between my parents. Every day they are busy trying to make money. They don't act romantic ways couples do in books and on TV. They never say "I love you". It's not their style.
One day, my mother was sewing (缝) a quilt (被子). I sat down beside her. "Mom, I have a question to ask you," I said after a while.
"What?" she asked, still working.
"Is there love between you and Dad?" I asked her. She didn't answer right away. I thought I had hurt her. At last I heard my mother say, "Susan, look at this thread (线). Sometimes it appears, but most of it disappears in the quilt. It makes the quilt strong. If life was a quilt, then love should be a thread. It can hardly be seen anywhere, but it's really there."
I listened carefully but I didn't understand her until the next spring. My father suddenly got seriously sick. My mother had to stay with him in the hospital for a month.
After they got back, she helped my father walk slowly down the country road every day. My father had never been so gentle.
"Dad, how are you feeling now?" I asked him one day.
"Susan, don't worry about me," he said, "I just like walking with your mom. I like this kind of life."
Once, I thought love meant flowers, gifts and sweet kisses. Now, I know that love is the thread that holds a family together.
【1】Why does the writer think there may be no love between her parents?
A.Because they never say "I love you." to each other.
