四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、   More and more people believe that technologies are great for learning. Today, such teaching tools(工具) as iPads are used in a lot of courses(学科), including language, history and science.

Many teachers are supporters of using iPads in language learning. They say that students now have much more time for discussion in the classroom. The teachers also say that iPads allow students to learn at their own pace. Some students might listen to a conversation only once and understand it, so they can save time for doing other things. Other students, however, might need to listen to the same conversation again and again to understand it.

The students who are using the new tool in some courses are also happy. They believe that using iPads is a more enjoyable way to learn, such as listening to stories and watching movies. The class has become much more interesting and creative.

There are other advantages for students. By using iPads, they can concentrate on the material and learn more. Teaching notes are stored(分类) in their iPads and are easy to find. Some students spend more time studying now.

Many adults complain that technologies such as iPads are bad for students. They worry that students might use iPads to download teaching notes and use them to cheat during exams. Some believe that iPads may separate(分隔) students from each other.

However, technologies are already a part of most students’ day-to-day lives. As for cheating, teachers can ask students to hand in their iPads when they take exams. Education needs to make changes with the times as technology is playing an important part. • 26、   As the global pandemic (大流行病) speeds up, many are wondering about the effectiveness of masks and when it's necessary to wear them. Most people from the East believe that wearing a mask is essential to control the spread of the novel coronavirus pneumonia (NCP). But people in the West generally would argue that, unless one is already ill, wearing a mask is simply unnecessary.

In Eastern countries like China, mask-wearing is ingrained in their cultures. In fact, people in the East wear masks not just to protect themselves from illness but also for a variety of other reasons.

In many Asian countries, masks are worn in many scenarios (情景) in daily life, such as doing housework or visiting patients in the hospital. They can give people the comfort of being protected. In recent years, they are worn simply for cosmetic reasons. Young people in Japan, for example, wear masks as a fashion statement, expressing their personal style through unique designs and patterns.

In Asia, wearing a face mask, deeply rooted in the culture, is also an outward expression of group-oriented values. With one's face partially covered, one becomes part of a giant collectivist (集体主义的) whole. "People communicated their responsibilities to the social group of which they were members," wrote Peter Baehr, a research professor in social theory at Lingnan University, Hong Kong. "By disguising an individual's face, it gave greater salience (突显) to collective identity. Just like we need to wear uniforms when we are at work or at school."

In Western countries, however, individual values are the most important. As a citizen, it is one's duty to prevent the spread of illness by following proper hygienic procedures, such as washing one's hands and limiting one's contact with others. However, a face mask is taken as something only for those showing symptoms (症状) of illness.

Whether from the East or the West, social culture and peer pressure have played an important role in one's decision about whether or not to wear a mask. That's because human beings are social creatures who take into consideration what other members of society think of us. The most important thing is to respect others' opinions, no matter how different they are.

1The underlined word "ingrained" in Paragraph 2 probably means "__________".

    A.deeply fixed B.widely respected

    C.greatly developed D.gradually accepted

2The third and fourth paragraph are written to show__________.

A.how people in Asia use masks

B.why people in Asia wear masks

C.what Asian culture and value are

D.when Asian culture and value work

    3The writer probably agrees that__________.

A.wearing a mask is a good way to show one's personality

B.it is not necessary for those who are healthy to wear a mask

C.whether we choose to wear a mask is a reflection of our culture

D.westerners take wearing a mask as a useful way to protect themselves

  • 27、   Monkeys seem to have a way with numbers.

A team of researchers trained three Rhesus monkeys to associate 26 clearly different symbols made up of numbers and selective letters with 0-25 drops of water or juice as a reward. The researchers then tested how the monkeys combined—or added—the symbols to get the reward.

Here's how Harvard Medical School scientist Margaret Livingstone, who led the team, described the experiment: In their cages the monkeys were provided with touch screens. On one part of the screen, a symbol would appear, and on the other side two symbols inside a circle were shown. For example, the number 7 would flash on one side of the screen and the other end would have 9 and 8. If the monkeys touched the left side of the screen they would be rewarded with seven drops of water or juice; if they went for the circle, they would be rewarded with the sum of the numbers—17 in this example.

After running hundreds of tests, the researchers noted that the monkeys would go for the higher values more than half the time, showing that they were performing a calculation(计算), not just remembering the value of each combination.

When the team studied the results of the experiment more closely, they noticed that the monkeys tended to underestimate(低估)a sum compared with a single symbol when the two were close in value—sometimes choosing, for example, a 13 over the sum of 8 and 6. The underestimation was systematic: When adding two numbers, the monkeys always paid attention to the larger of the two, and then added only a fraction(小部分)of the smaller number to it.

"This shows that there is a certain way number is represented in their brains, "Dr. Livingstone says. “But in this experiment what they're doing is paying more attention to the big number than the little one.”

1What did the researchers do to the monkeys before testing them?

A.They fed them. B.They named them.

C.They trained them. D.They washed them.

2How did the monkeys get their reward in the experiment?

    A.By drawing a circle. B.By touching a screen.

C.By watching videos. D.By mixing two drinks.

3What did Livingstone's team find about the monkeys?

A.They could perform basic addition. B.They could understand simple words.

C.They could remember numbers easily. D.They could hold their attention for long.

4In which part of a newspaper may this text appear?

    A.Science. B.Health. C.Education. D.Entertainment.

Facts you don’t know about animals

People have already known a lot about animals. However, there are still some things about animals that may surprise you. Here are some facts about animals you probably didn’t know.

    Cows

Cows do have best friends and feel stressed (焦虑的) when they are separated (分开). Sometimes they even a1 humans when they are too nervous and angry. However, scientists also found that cows are very social animals and a cow always makes friends with other cows in the herd (兽群). When a cow is with its friend, its heart rate is reduced compared with when it is a2 or with a cow from another herd.

    Penguins

During breeding (繁殖) season, a male penguin will offer a pebble (卵石) to a female penguin as a g3. If she takes it, they will become partners. When the female penguin lays an egg, she and her husband may c4 it on their feet, because some penguins don’t build nests.

    Crocodiles

When crocodiles eat something, they always swallow () their prey. They don’t chew it like other animals. To help with digestion (消化), they swallow stones which grind up the food in their stomachs. But these stones can h5 be defecated (排泄掉), so they may stay in their stomachs all their lives.

    Elephants

Elephants use plants to get rid of p6 or other illness. Scientists once found a pregnant (怀孕的) elephant in Kenya who kept eating a kind of plant for a few days, while this kind of plant was not part of her regular d7. Four days later, she could give birth to a baby elephant quietly. The same plant was used by the local women to help with labor (分娩).
