24、 Japan fixes English
You’ve probably seen some pretty “interesting” English translations. For example, it is common to see “Chinglish” on restaurant menus and on signs in public areas in China.
Japan is now working to improve its English signs so that tourists will have an easier time getting around during the 2020 Olympics.
Improving public transportation signs is especially important, as tourists will take trains and buses to get around. The Japan Tourism Agency recently carried out a two-month investigation into the websites of 85 train and bus companies around the country.
The agency found some rather odd translations. For example, one transportation company refers to children as “dwarfs(侏儒)”. Other transportation errors include “Forgotten Center” for “lost and found”, and “release place” for “ticket machine”.
But does Japan have enough time to correct its English? One expert thinks it’s too late. Gregory Hadley, a professor at Niigata University, thinks it can’t be done. He pointed out that many companies simply won’t be able to afford to hire translators and reprint their materials.
In addition, the people who originally translated the materials probably won’t want to lose face by admitting to translating them correctly, he added.
Whether it can fix its signs or not, Japan is preparing for a wave of tourism. About 30 million people visited the country last year and the number will hit 40 million next year, when the 2020 Olympics officially kick off.

25、You’ve got plenty of emails from your mom, and maybe even a few from dear old grandma. But have you ever received a message from a river?
Now, Ireland’s River Lee is sending out much information, thanks to wireless(无线的) technology. In a program called the DEPLOY project, scientists have put some sensors(传感器) in rivers that can find pollution levels.
Instead of asking scientists to collect water samples several times a day, the government can now examine pollution levels in the water, and find out if there is anything polluted entering the river. This makes it much easier for scientists to protect the environment, since problems can be discovered before a serious pollution accident really happens.
People in the area can also receive free reports from the river, so that they can find out whether the water is safe for swimming or boating on a certain day. And people can also know if the water is clear enough for them to drink and use.
The DEPLOY project has not only started in Ireland, also the same programs have started in thousands of places around the U.S. Now you live in a world in which you could receive information with your mobile phone about environment. The technology should help to make us know more about the pollution that surrounds us—which just might get us all a little more involved with trying to clean up our world.

26、People who smoke could lose around one third of their daily memory, researchers say.
A study by a team at Northumbria University showed that smokers lost more of their memory when compared to non-smokers.
And the research also found that those who kicked the habit saw their ability to recollect information back to almost the same level as non-smokers.
The study involved more than seventy 18-to-25-year-olds and included a research of the university .Those who took part were asked to recall small details, such as a list of songs played at the Students’ Union and tasks completed at various points .

Dr. Tom Heffernan, who leads Northumbria University’s Collaboration for Drug and Alcohol Research Group, said the findings would be useful in movements against smoking. He said, “This is the first time that a study has set out to examine whether giving up smoking has an effect on memory.”

27、 I was beginning to grow handsome. My coat was bright and black, I had one white foot and a pretty white star on my forehead. When I was four, Squire Gordon decided to buy me. Then Farmer Grey began to break me in.
Like all horses that have grown up, I had to wear gears (用具). The first is a bit and bridle. I hated wearing a bit in my mouth. It was horrible, like a metal finger between my teeth. The saddle was not so bad. One morning, my master rode me round the meadow. I was proud to carry him, and I soon got used to it. But I didn’t like the iron shoes. They were very stiff and heavy on my feet. But in time I got used to that too.
My mother told me, “There are good men like our master, but there are bad men too. I hope you have good masters. But remember; always do your best.”
Early in May, a man came to take me away to Squire Gordon's house, in the village of Birtwick. My new stable (马厩) was large and comfortable. There was a little fat grey pony next to me. His name was Merrylegs. And I also found a tall chestnut horse at the corner of the stable, quiet.
“That's Ginger," Merrylegs told me. "She bites. One day she bit James, the groom (马夫). She says no one was kind to her before. But James and John, our grooms, are very good to us, and Squire Gordon doesn't whip (鞭打) his horses, so I think she's going to like it here."
The next morning John took me for a ride. On the way back, we met Squire Gordon and Mrs. Gordon.
"Well, John, how does he go?” the Squire asked.
“Excellent, sir." John answered.
Mrs. Gordon said, "He's a beauty. Let's call him Black Beauty."
