四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、   Do you think robots could pass an eighth-grade test? Guess what—they can.

The artificial intelligence (AI) system Aristo recently passed the same eighth-grade science test that some US students take. The New York Times reported. Aristo correctly(正确地) answered 90 percent of the questions on the test.

This is an example of the progress that is being made in AI development. Four years ago, 700 computer scientists tried to develop AI systems that could pass these kinds of exams. None scored higher than 60 percent.

Scientists at the Allen Institute in the US developed the system. Aristo was able to pass the exam because it can not only understand language, but also use logical thinking(逻辑思维)to solve difficult problems. For example, it can understand what a forest fire is and how it could affect(影响) animals.

The system used BERT, a kind of neural(神经的) network technology developed by Google, to answer the questions. BERT has "read" thousands of articles and can understand English. If it looks at a sentence with a missing word, it can correctly guess what the word is. With BERT's help, Aristo "read" many multiple-choice(多选的) questions. Over time, it was able to find logical patterns(逻辑模式).

Aristo’s success means that we might see new AI-based products(人工智能产品), such as search engines(搜索引擎) and databases(数据库) for hospitals. AI systems might be able to better understand users in the future.

1What did the AI system Aristo do?

    A.Help students study. B.Pass a school test.

C.Talk like a human does. D.Develop other AI systems.

    2What was Aristo's biggest success?

A.It passed several kinds of tests. B.It passed the test with a full score.

C.It scored 90 percent on the test. D.It worked out a set of test questions.

3How did Aristo answer questions in the test?

A.By using BERT. B.By asking Google for help.

C.By working with scientists. D.By copying the students' answers.

    4Paragraph 5 is written to________.

A.explain how Aristo worked B.show what else Aristo can do

C.show how Aristo was created D.describe another AI breakthrough

5From the story, we can learn that________.

A.AI-based products are not useful B.AI systems might be used in many fields

C.robots can't think logically D.Aristo will be used to help teach students

  • 25、Tom and his best friend Rob were out of school for the summer. They had been swimming, gone to the movies, played video games, and even built a castle out of some old cardboard boxes. But today they were so bored. “At least we would have something to do.” Tom thought for a while and suggested, “Let’s make some popcorn and lemonade and sell it outside.”

The boys went to the kitchen and asked Tom’s mom if she would help them make some lemonade while they popped the popcorn. Tom’s mom got the lemons from the refrigerator and also a small amount of sugar. She mixed up the lemonade while the boys started popping the popcorn.

Tom and Rob got a small table from the garage and set it up near the sidewalk. They made a red sign telling everyone that popcorn and lemonade was for sale. The boys sat for about ten minutes before they got their first sale. Mrs. Jenkins, one of their neighbors, was walking her dog. “It’s so hot today.” “I sure can use a drink,” she said. Soon the boys were busy handing out popcorn to Mr. Baker. He was walking down the street sending the mail. “I need a break,” he said. “Walking all over the neighborhood gave me an appetite.”

The boys had only three popcorn bags left and enough lemonade for three more cups. “Wow, I didn’t think the popcorn and lemonade would sell that fast. We made six dollars,” said Tom. “If we get bored again before school starts, we can try selling more lemonade with cookies(饼干) next time,” laughed Rob.

    1What did Tom suggest?

    A. Swimming with their friends.

    B. Buying some sugar and cookies.

    C. Making some popcorn and lemonade.

    D. Going to the movies and playing games.

2Where did Tom and Rob set up the table?

    A. Near the sidewalk.   B. In the kitchen.

    C. At the supermarket.   D. Outside the school.

3What did Tom and Rob learn from this experience?

    A. People might prefer to buy things on sale.

    B. They could do something new to have fun.

    C. Mr. Baker liked sending mails very much.

    D. Mrs. Jenkins needed help to walk the dog.

  • 26、New Technology Revolutionizes(变革) Learning

More and more people believe that technologies are great for learning. Today, such teaching tools as iPads are used in a lot of courses, including language, history and science.

Many teachers are supporters of using iPads in language learning. They say that students now have much more time for discussion in the classroom. Instead of spending valuable class time listening to texts or watching teaching videos, students can do this on their own and come to class prepared for discussion.

The teachers also say that iPads allow students to learn at their own pace. Some students might listen to a dialogue only once and understand it, so they can save time for doing other things. Other students, however, might need to listen to the same dialogue again and again to understand it. Using iPads is especially helpful to students who are learning a language at different paces.

The students who are using the new tool in some courses are also happy. They believe that using iPads is a more enjoyable way to learn (such as listening to stories and watching movies). The class has become much more interesting and creative.

There are other advantages for students. By using iPads, they can pay more attention to the material and learn more. Teaching notes are stored in their iPads and are easy to find .Some students spend more time studying now. “I can listen to my language material or watch teaching videos on the bus, instead of having to wait until I get home,” a student explained.

Many adults complain that technologies such as iPads are doing harm to students. They worry that students might use iPads to download teaching notes and use them to cheat during exams. Some believe that iPads may separate students from each other. If a student spends more time watching videos on an iPad, he will have fewer opportunities to have face-to-face communication with others.

However, technologies are already a part of most students’ day-to-day lives. As for cheating, teachers can ask students to hand in their iPads when they take exams. Education needs to make changes with the times as technology is playing an important part. We should look forward to a wonderful future when iPads and other technologies can add a lot to the classroom.
