27、 Many animals move from one place to another at certain times of the year. This yearly movement is called migration (迁徙). They migrate to find food, a partner or warmer climate. One of the most wonderful migration in nature is that of the North American monarch butterfly (帝王蝴蝶).
Every autumn, millions of these beautiful insects with fine black and orange wings begin a long and difficult journey. Somehow they manage to travel around 4,000 kilometers south and find their way to California or Mexico. However, until recently no one knew how they did this.
A team of scientists led by Professor Eli Shlizerman at the university of Washington has now found the answer. They have found out that the monarch is able to tell the time of day. It uses its eyes to measure the position of the sun. These two pieces of information --- the time of day and the point where the sun is in the sky --- allow the butterfly to determine the way to go. Finally, it manages to reach the places where it will spend the winter.
The solution to the mystery of the monarch's amazing ability comes at a time when it is in serious trouble. Its population has crashed by as much as 90 percent in the last few years. Sadly, human activity is the main reason why the number of monarch butterflies is decreasing. In many of the places where the butterfly can be spotted, people are destroying the natural environment. They cut down trees and use chemicals that kill the plants that monarch caterpillars (幼虫)feed on.
The research on the monarch's behavior has however led to a greater awareness of this creature. People have been working together to record its migration and make sure that there are enough plants for it to eat. If this works, there may come a time when the number of monarch butterflies increases once again. The more we know about this lovely creature, the greater the chance it will survive to keep its place in the natural world for a long time to come.

28、 Nowadays more and more people are too busy with work to relax themselves. We have no time to tell a bed-time story to our children, or enjoy a nice dinner with our family, or take a break to think about how we live the precious life, or even meet friends. All we notice is that the distinctions that used to guide and steady us—between Sunday and Monday, public and private, here and there—are gone. We have more ways to communicate, but less and less to say, partly because we’re so busy communicating.
Maybe that’s why more and more people I know, even if they have no religious belief, seem to be turning to yoga, or mediation, or tai chi. Some friends of mine try to go on long walks every Sunday, or to “forget” their cellphones at home. A series of tests in recent years has shown that their brains become both calmer and sharper after spending time in quiet rural settings.
In my own case, I often turn to extreme measures to try to keep my sanity and ensure that I have time to do nothing at all. I’ve not yet used a cellphone and I’ve never Tweeted or entered Facebook. I tried not to go online till my day’s writing was finished, and I moved from Manhattan to rural Japan.
None of this is a matter of principle or asceticism (苦行主义): It’s just pure selfishness. Nothing makes me feel better—calmer, clearer and happier—than being in one place, absorbed in a book, a conversation, a piece of music. It’s actually something deeper than mere happiness: It’s joy, which David Steindl-Rast describes as “that kind of happiness that doesn’t depend on what happens”. That is the highest of the highest we have been longing for—The Joy of Quiet.

A. he is out of work
B. whatever he does makes no sense
C. he can enjoy himself in his leisure time
D. he is worried about his writing
【4】What can we learn from the passage?
A. The writer is unwilling to help others since he is selfish.
B. Slowing down to find deep-down joy is necessary.
C. It is better to go back to the ancient times since we are so busy now.
D. We have more to say because we have more ways to communicate.
【5】What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Enjoying quiet time is very important.
B. We can do some sports such as yoga to relax.
C. To feel better, we should do nothing at all.
D. The more we communicate, the better we will feel.

30、 Research has shown that two-thirds of human conversation is taken up not with discussion of the cultural or political problems of the day, not heated debates about films we've just watched or books we've just finished reading, but plain and simple ______.
Language is our greatest treasure as a species, and what do we ______ do with it? We gossip. About others' behaviour and private lives, such as who's doing what with whom, who's in and who's out-and why; how to deal with difficult ______ situations involving children, lovers, and colleagues.
So why are we keen on gossiping? Are we just natural ______, of both time and words? Or do we talk a lot about nothing in particular simply to avoid facing up to the really important issues of life? It's not the case according to Professor Robin Dunbar. In fact, in his latest book, Grooming, Gossip and the Evolution of Language, the psychologist says gossip is one of these really vital ______.
Dunbar ______ the traditional view that language was developed by the men at the early stage of social development in order to organize their manly hunting activities more effectively. Instead, he suggests that language evolved among women. We don't spend two-thirds of our time gossiping just because we can talk, argues Dunbar—______, he goes on to say, language evolved specifically to allow us to gossip.
Dunbar arrived at his cheery theory by studying the ______ of the higher primates(灵长类动物)like monkeys. By means of grooming--cleaning the fur by brushing it, monkeys form groups with other individuals on whom they can rely for support in the event of some kind of conflict within the group or______ from outside it.
As we human beings evolve from a particular branch of the primate family, Dunbar ______ that at one time in our history we did much the same. Grouping together made sense because the bigger the group, the greater the ______ it provided; on the other hand, the bigger the group, the greater the stresses of living close to others. Grooming helped to ______ the pressure and calm everybody down.
But as the groups got bigger and bigger, the amount of time spent in grooming activities also had to be ______ to maintain its effectiveness. Clearly, a more ______ kind of grooming was needed, and thus language evolved as a kind of vocal(有声的)grooming which allowed humans to develop relationship with ever-larger groups by exchanging information over a wider network of individuals than would be possible by one-to-one ______ contact.

31、
The meaning of silence varies among cultural group. Silence may be 【1】, or they may be empty when a person has nothing to say. Silence may be viewed by some cultural groups as extremely uncomfortable; therefore attempts may be made to fill every 【2】 with conversation. Persons in other cultural groups value silence and view it as necessary for understanding a person’s needs. Many native Americans value silence and feel it is a basic part of 【3】 among people, just at some traditional Chinese and Thai persons do. Therefore when a person from one of these culture is speaking and suddenly stops, what may be 【4】 is that the person wants the listener to consider what has been said before continuing. In these culture, silence is a call for 【5】.
Other cultures may use silence in other ways, particularly when dealing with 【6】 among people or in relationships of people with different amounts of power. For example, Russian, French, and Spanish persons may use silence to show 【7】between parties about the topic under discussion. However, Mexicans may use silence when instructions are given by a person in authority(权威)rather than be rude to that person by arguing with him or her. In still another use, persons in Asian cultures may view silence as a sign of respect, particularly to an elder or a person in authority.
Nurses and other care-givers need to be aware of the 【8】 meanings of silence wen they come across the personal anxiety their patients may be experiencing. Nurses should recognize their own persona and cultural construction of silence so that a patient’s silence is not 【9】 too early or allowed to go on unnecessarily. A nurse who understands the healing 【10】 of silence can use this understanding to assist in the care of patients from their own and from other cultures.
