  • 26、Winter is often bitterly cold, which often makes us stay indoors more instead of heading out to exercise. Worse still, there are many viruses doing their best to make you sick. And sneezing, coughing and nose blowing make the rooms a habitat for viruses. 【1】. Touching a doorknob or shaking a hand may make you get sick. Although it may sound terrible, there are still some things you can do to avoid viruses. Here are several simple tips to stay healthy in winters.

    Wash your hands

You pick up viruses everywhere and they live on your hands, so wash your hands and do it often. 【2】 But if that’s not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer (消毒杀菌剂).

【3】. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with your hands. That’s one way viruses can get into your body.

    Get the flu shot (疫苗)

【4】, but getting the flu shot lowers your chances of getting the flu. For example, getting the flu shot last year resulted in a 34% lower risk of coming down with the flu.

    Avoid sick people

【5】. Viruses spread very easily through the air, so keep at least six feet between you and the sneezing, sniffling and coughing person.

    A.It’s no guarantee

    B.Take care of your face

C.Keep your hands away from your face

D.The best way is to use regular soap and water

E.It is easy for viruses to spread from person to person

  • 27、I don’t think I can recall a time when I wasn’t aware of the beauty of the ocean. Growing up in Australia, I had the good fortune of having the sea at my side. The first time I went to Halfmoon Bay, I suddenly had the feeling of not being able to feel the ground with my feet anymore.

For my 10th birthday, my sister and I were taken out to the Great Barrier Reef. There were fish in different colors, caves and layers of coral. They made such an impression on me. When I learned that only 1 percent of Australian’s Coral Sea was protected, I was shocked. Australian marine life is particularly important because the reefs have more marine species than any other country on earth. But sadly, only 45 percent of the world’s reefs are considered healthy.

This statistic is depressing, so it’s important for us to do everything to protect them. The hope that the Coral Sea remains a complete eco-system has led me to take action. I’ve become involved with the Protect Our Coral Sea activity, which aims to create the largest marine park in the world. It would serve as a place where the ocean’ s species will all have a safe place forever.

Together, Angus and I created a little video and we hope it will inspire people to be a part of the movement. Angus also shares many beautiful childhood memories of the ocean as a young boy, who grew up sailing, admiring the beauty of the ocean, and trying to find the secrets of ocean species.

【1】From the underlined sentence in Para.1, we can learn the author ________.

A.seldom went surfing at the sea

B.forgot his experiences about the ocean

C.never went back to his hometown

D.had a wonderful impression of Halfmoon Bay

【2】According to the second paragraph, Australian marine life ________.

A.is escaping from the Coral Sea gradually

B.depends on reefs for living greatly

    C.may be faced with danger

D.is protected better than that in other oceans

【3】The Protect Our Coral Sea activity is intended to ________.

    A.contribute to a complete eco-system

B.prevent more marine species being endangered

C.set up a large nature reserve for reefs

    D.raise more teenagers’ environmental awareness

【4】Angus and the author created a little video to ________.

A.urge more people to take action to protect the marine species

B.inspire more people to explore the secret of the ocean

C.share their childhood experiences about the ocean

D.bring back to people their memories of ocean species

  • 28、   A breathtaking trick potentially left over from our ancestors might be found in us — the ability to sense oxygen through our skin.

Amphibians, animals such as frogs that can live both on land and in water, have long been known to be capable of breathing through their skin. In fact, the first known lungless frog that breathes only through its skin was discovered recently in the rivers of Borneo.

Now the same oxygen sensors found in frog skins and in the lungs of mammals (哺乳动物) have unexpectedly been discovered in the skin of mice.

“No one had ever looked,” explained Randall Johnson, a biologist researcher.

Mice and frogs are quite distant relatives, so the fact they have these molecules (分子) in common in their skin suggests they might well be found in the skin of other mammals, such as humans.

“We have no reason to think that they are not in the skin of people too,” Johnson said.

These molecules not only detect oxygen, but help increase levels of vital red blood cells, which carry oxygen around the body. Normal mice breathing in air that is 10 percent oxygen—a dangerously low level similar to conditions at the top of Mount Everest, and about half that of air at sea level. However, mice that had the oxygen sensor HIF-1a genetically removed from their skin failed to produce this hormone (荷尔蒙) even after hours of such low oxygen.

These findings, if they hold true in humans, suggest one could raise the level of oxygen circulating inside the body. This could help treat lung diseases and disorders such as anemia (贫血症) without injecting drugs, which make up a multibillion-dollar market, Johnson said.

Athletes also often try to get more oxygen delivered to their muscles in order to improve their performance. They often do this by training at high altitudes or in low-oxygen tents. The new study suggests they might want to expose their skin as well as breathing in low-oxygen air to improve their performance. “It’s hard to say what exactly might be done, however—there’s a lot we don’t know yet,” Johnson explained.

The scientists detailed their findings in the April 18 issue of the journal Cell.

1Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A.Johnson believes that Oxygen sensors also exist in human skin.

B.People have to surf the Internet to read detailed findings.

C.It has been proved that these findings help treat lung diseases.

D.It has long been expected oxygen sensors exist in mice’s skin.

2One of the functions of the molecules mentioned above is _______.

A.carrying oxygen around the body B.improving athletes’ performance

C.detecting oxygen D.increasing level of oxygen

3What is Johnson’s attitude to the application of the findings to the athletes’ training?

    A.Negative B.Doubting

    C.Positive D.Hesitating

4The best title of the passage may be _______.

A.Great Findings Benefits Athletes A Lot

B.Frogs And Mice Are Distant Relatives

C.First Known Animal Breathes Through Skin

D.Humans Might Sense Oxygen Through Skin

  • 29、In the 19th century, an Arab physician known as Zuhr Ibn conducted some animal research to assess the surgical procedures that could be applicable in humans. Since then, animal testing has been considered to be the most efficient way to develop new drugs. New medical treatments and drugs are tested in animals first to determine their effectiveness or safety levels before they are finally tested on humans. However, it remains controversial whether it is morally right or wrong to use animals for medical or commercial experiments.

Use of animals for medical purposes is seen to be necessary by many scientists. Researchers usually begin their trials using rats. If the tests are successful, further tests are done on monkeys before using human beings. For testing, such tiered(分层的) rounds are important because it reduces the level of error and any negative side effects. Some argue that animal testing has contributed to many life-saving cures and treatments and there is no adequate alternative to testing on a living, whole-body system. Moreover, there are regulations for animal testing that limit the misuse of animals during research, which serves as evidence that animals are well taken care of and treated well instead of being intentionally harmed.

However, some other experts and animal welfare groups have opposed such practice, terming it as inhumane(不人道的) and claiming it should be banned. According to Humane Society International, animals used in experiments are commonly subjected to force feeding, radiation exposure, operations to deliberately cause damage and frightening situations to create depression and anxiety. They also hold the view that animals are very different from human beings and therefore make poor test subjects. Drugs that pass animal tests are not necessarily safe.   Animal tests on the arthritis(关节炎) drug Vioxx showed that it would have a protective effect on the hearts of mice, yet the drug went on to cause more than 27,000 heart attacks before being pulled from the market.

It’s safe to say that using animals for tests will continue to be debated in many years to come. Despite the benefits of animal testing, some of the animal welfare organizations’ concerns need to be addressed with adequate regulations to ensure that animals are treated humanely.

【1】Why is animal testing considered necessary?

A.Because rats are more similar to humans than monkeys.

B.Because other testing alternatives may not replace the need for animals.

C.Because animal testing can spare humans any side effect.

D.Because animal testing has been in practice since the 19th century.

【2】What suffering do animals go through during experiments?

    A.Eating poisonous food.

    B.Being killed deliberately.

    C.Breathing in polluted air.

    D.Having unnecessary operations.

【3】What does the example Vioxx in paragraph 3 tell us?

    A.Arthritis is hard to cure.

B.Some drugs need to be withdrawn from the market.

C.Animals can not necessarily produce accurate results.

D.A drug should be tested many more times before its release.

【4】What action will the author probably agree with?

A.Experts try hard to determine whether animal tests are harmful.

B.The authorities issue a new law to guarantee animal rights during research.

C.Scientists reduce the number of animals used in research.

D.Relevant organizations show more concern about the animals’ welfare.

    A Vacation with My Mother

I had an interesting childhood. It was filled with surprises and amusements, all because of my mother---loving, sweet, yet absent-minded and forgetful. One strange family trip we took when I was eleven tells a lot about her.

My two sets of grandparents lived in Colorado and North Dakota, and my parents decided to spend a few weeks driving to those states and seeing all the sights along the way. As the first day of our trip approached, David, my eight-year-old brother, and I unwillingly said good-bye to all of our friends. Who knew if we’d ever see them again? Finally, the moment of our departure arrived, and we loaded suitcases, books, games, camping equipment, and a tent into the car and bravely drove off. We bravely drove off again two hours later after we’d returned home to get the purse and traveler’s checks Mom had forgotten.

David and I were always a little nervous when using gas station bathrooms if Mom was driving while Dad slept: “You stand outside the door and play lookout(放哨) while I go, and I’ll stand outside the door and play lookout while you go.” I had terrible pictures in my mind: “Honey, where are the kids?” “What?! Oh, Gosh…I thought they were being awfully quiet.” We were never actually left behind in a strange city, but we weren’t about to take any chances.

On the fourth or fifth night, we had trouble finding a hotel with a vacancy. After driving in vain for some time, Mom suddenly got a great idea: Why didn’t we find a house with a likely-looking backyard and ask if we could set up tent there? David and I became nervous. To our great relief, Dad turned down the idea. Mom never could understand our objections(反对). If a strange family showed up on her front doorstep, Mom would have been delighted. She thinks everyone in the world is as nice as she is. We finally found a vacancy in the next town.
