Choosing Dunhuang and Shaoxing at the same time marks the first time that one country has selected two cities in the program.

These four cities are major cultural landmarks in their respective countries. • 27、   According to a sales report from askci.com on 2018’s Double Eleven, the national shopping day, women’s down garments(羽绒服)were among the top 10 hit products. 1It seems the strong warmth provided by down garments has been nationally approved. Especially during a fiercely cold winter, when you tremble in the wind, who cares about being stylish?2As living standards rise, more expensive garments filled with goose down instead of duck down, have appeared in the market. Goose or duck?

3First, the down from mature geese is larger and thicker, which makes garments filled with goose down much warmer. Second, goose down is more flexible than that of ducks. The last difference is key for people sensitive to smells: Compared to duck down, goose down has no strange smell. 4These are the advantages that account for the higher prices of garments made with goose down. However, duck down is still a good choice if you live in place where winter is windy, yet not that cold.

    5

Although most down garments can make people look big and fat, you could choose longer ones for a slimming look. For colors, metallic colors are more stylish and pair more easily with other street-style outfits.

    A. How to be stylish?

    B. Ducks do not eat clean diet, which could give their feathers a strong smell.

    C. Not everyone prefers wearing down garments.

    D. Where to choose your down garment?

    E. What’s the difference between the down from these two creatures?

    F. They have been popular for many years in China.

    G. All you need is warmth.

  • 28、In the 19th century, an Arab physician known as Zuhr Ibn conducted some animal research to assess the surgical procedures that could be applicable in humans. Since then, animal testing has been considered to be the most efficient way to develop new drugs. New medical treatments and drugs are tested in animals first to determine their effectiveness or safety levels before they are finally tested on humans. However, it remains controversial whether it is morally right or wrong to use animals for medical or commercial experiments.

Use of animals for medical purposes is seen to be necessary by many scientists. Researchers usually begin their trials using rats. If the tests are successful, further tests are done on monkeys before using human beings. For testing, such tiered(分层的) rounds are important because it reduces the level of error and any negative side effects. Some argue that animal testing has contributed to many life-saving cures and treatments and there is no adequate alternative to testing on a living, whole-body system. Moreover, there are regulations for animal testing that limit the misuse of animals during research, which serves as evidence that animals are well taken care of and treated well instead of being intentionally harmed.

However, some other experts and animal welfare groups have opposed such practice, terming it as inhumane(不人道的) and claiming it should be banned. According to Humane Society International, animals used in experiments are commonly subjected to force feeding, radiation exposure, operations to deliberately cause damage and frightening situations to create depression and anxiety. They also hold the view that animals are very different from human beings and therefore make poor test subjects. Drugs that pass animal tests are not necessarily safe.   Animal tests on the arthritis(关节炎) drug Vioxx showed that it would have a protective effect on the hearts of mice, yet the drug went on to cause more than 27,000 heart attacks before being pulled from the market.

It’s safe to say that using animals for tests will continue to be debated in many years to come. Despite the benefits of animal testing, some of the animal welfare organizations’ concerns need to be addressed with adequate regulations to ensure that animals are treated humanely.

【1】Why is animal testing considered necessary?

A.Because rats are more similar to humans than monkeys.

B.Because other testing alternatives may not replace the need for animals.

C.Because animal testing can spare humans any side effect.

D.Because animal testing has been in practice since the 19th century.

【2】What suffering do animals go through during experiments?

    A.Eating poisonous food.

    B.Being killed deliberately.

    C.Breathing in polluted air.

    D.Having unnecessary operations.

【3】What does the example Vioxx in paragraph 3 tell us?

    A.Arthritis is hard to cure.

B.Some drugs need to be withdrawn from the market.

C.Animals can not necessarily produce accurate results.

D.A drug should be tested many more times before its release.

【4】What action will the author probably agree with?

A.Experts try hard to determine whether animal tests are harmful.

B.The authorities issue a new law to guarantee animal rights during research.

C.Scientists reduce the number of animals used in research.

D.Relevant organizations show more concern about the animals’ welfare.

  • 29、   My notebooks and I are inseparable. Look inside, and you will find stories from a girl with a heart and a mind of her own. When I write, I create a world where I have complete control and can escape from the pressure of everyday life. My story ideas are so fluid that they can come at any time, so I always keep a notebook with me to record them.

I have been writing since the third grade when my teacher gave the class an assignment to write a short poem. My poem was called “Spring Time” and it was the first time I had discovered that writing my thoughts or feelings was good for me. It became my way to relax and to escape. I wrote every day and found myself more relaxed. In the fifth grade, my teacher “forced” us to keep a journal, but the requirement was not a problem for me since I was always writing. I wrote to entertain myself. I also wrote to rebel (反抗) whenever I was tired of having to become what society and the world around me expected me to be.

My stories have grown into books that I hope to publish. a major character turned up in my stories—Kasumi. She was the result of an innocent idea to be free from the restraints of the world around me. She says the things that I can’t say aloud. In her world, she easily faces and overcomes all difficulties. Kasumi is stubborn, fearless and brave. She also has a career and a family, which she holds together emotionally and physically, just as my grandmother has done.

My grandmother lives by a simple rule: if you don’t like something, open your mouth and say something about it. She does not limit her expressions because of society’s expectations. She sets an example to me and helps to define who I am as a young woman. In this way, my grandmother is reflected in Kasumi.

In the ninth grade, my ways of expression expanded into acting. Through acting, I have leaned how to communicate physically, verbally and emotionally. When I act, I am able to fall into the roles. Each role is a representation of me. I started acting with the role of Mrs. Fezziwig in A Christmas Carol. Two years later, I received my biggest part as a narrator (叙述着) in our production of Romeo and Juliet.

Through acting and writing. I have developed characters like the strong and outgoing women in my family. I have come to realize that writing and acting have helped me to become more independent and confident. Acting has increased my ability to work through the problems of everyday life.

On stage, the character’s feelings and problems become mine. Their voices are mine. The freedom of acting on stage has improved my writing, making me have the authority to create scenes that are more realistic. My stories in my notebooks are versions of the world around me that are enlarged by my imagination. I can break the limitation of reality by becoming a character on stage or entering a world I created in my notebooks. The authority I feel while playing a character on stage adds to my passion for excitement and adventure created in the universe of my notebooks.

1The author values her notebooks in that ________.

A.she likes writing all her secrets in the notebooks

B.she usually keeps her daily schedules in the notebooks

C.the notebooks provide her with a world where she can be herself

D.the notebooks have helped her form the habit of writing poems

2What can we know from the second paragraph?

A.The teacher was always hard on the students.

B.Becoming a famous poet is the author’s dream.

C.Some students found it difficult to keep a journal.

D.The author felt very stressed because of the teacher.

3What does the underlined word “restraints” probably mean in the third paragraph?

    A.limits B.desires C.promises D.experiences

4It can be inferred from the passage that ________.

A.the life on stage is far away from reality

B.the author improved her writing through acting

C.the author is afraid to be faced with her real life

D.the characters on stage often make people con fused

Scientists have proved what students have long suspected: Maths equations can actually trigger physical pain.

Regions of the brain linked with the experience of physical 1 were activated in those fearful of maths when they were presented with a tough equation, researchers have found. The higher a person’s anxiety of a maths task, the more it 2 activity in regions of their brain associated with visceral (内脏的) threat detection, and often the experience of pain itself.

However, the researchers say their study examines the pain response associated with anticipating an anxiety-provoking event, rather than the pain associated with a 3 event itself. A maths task itself is not painful but 4 the thought of it is highly unpleasant to certain people.

“Maths can be difficult, and for those with high levels of mathematics-anxiety (HMAs), math is associated with tension, apprehension (忧虑) and fear,” the researchers said in their paper titled. When Math Hurts. “5, this relation was not seen during math performance, 6 that it is not that math itself hurts, rather, the anticipation of math is painful. These results may also provide a potential neural mechanism to explain why (people with) HMAs tend to 7 math and math-related situations, which in turn can bias (使有偏见) (those with) high levels of mathematics-anxiety away from taking math classes or even entire math-related 8 paths. We provide the first neural 9 indicating the nature of the subjective experience of math-anxiety.

Other forms of psychological stress, such as social 10 or a traumatic break-up, can also elicit feeling of physical pain.”
