26、Your house may have an effect on your figure. Experts say the way you design your home could play a role in whether you pack on the pounds or keep them off. You can make your environment work for you instead of against you. Here are some ways to turn your home into part of your diet plan.
Open the curtains and turn up the lights. Dark environments are more likely to encourage overeating, for people are often less selfconscious (难为情) when they’re in poorly lit places—and so more likely to eat lots of food. If your home doesn’t have enough window light, get more lamps and flood the place with brightness.
Mind the colors. Research suggests warm colors fuel our appetites. In one study, people who ate meals in a blue room consumed 33 percent less than those in a yellow or red room. Warm colors like yellow make food appear more appetizing, while cold colors make us feel less hungry. So when it’s time to repaint, go blue.
Don’t forget the clock—or the radio. People who eat slowly tend to consume about 70 fewer calories (卡路里) per meal than those who rush through their meals. Begin keeping track of the time, and try to make dinner last at least 30 minutes. And while you’re at it, actually sit down to eat. If you need some help slowing down, turn on relaxing music. It makes you less likely to rush through a meal.
Downsize the dishes. Big serving bowls and plates can easily make us fat. We eat about 22 percent more when using a 12inch plate instead of a 10inch plate. When we choose a large spoon over a smaller one, total intake (摄入) jumps by 14 percent. And we’ll pour about 30 percent more liquid into a short, wide glass than a tall, skinny glass.

27、 When you enter a supermarket, you see shelves full of food. You walk between the shelves. You carry a shopping basket and your food is in it.
You probably hear soft, slow music as you walk between the shelves. If you hear fast music, you walk quickly. The supermarket plays slow music. You walk slowly and have more time to buy things.
Maybe you go to the meat department first. There is some meat on sale, and you want to find it. The manager of the supermarket knows where customers enter the meat department. The cheaper meat is at the other end of the meat department, away from where the customers enter. You have to walk by all the expensive meat before you find the cheaper meat. Maybe you will buy some of the expensive meat instead of the meat on sale.
The department selling milk and milk products such as butter and milk powder is called the dairy department. Many customers like milk that has only a little butterfat in it. One store has three different jars of low fat milk. One says “1 percent fat” on the jar. The second says “99 percent fat free”. The third says “LOW FAT” in big letters and “1%” in small letters. As you can see, all the milk has the same amount of fat. The milk is all the same. However, in this store the three jars of milk cost three different amounts of money. Maybe the customers will buy the milk that costs the most.
Most of the food in supermarkets is very pleasing. It all says “Buy me!” to the customers. The expensive meat says “Buy me!” as you walk by. The expensive milk jar says “Buy me! I have less fat.”

28、 I am a taxi driver. One Monday morning, I had stopped at New York Hospital when I found a well-dressed man coming over. He was waving to me. I waited until he jumped into the taxi. “La Guardia Airport, please,” he said.
As always, I wondered about my passenger. “What do you do?” “I am working at the hospital.” For some unknown reason, I decided to ask for his help.
“Could I ask a favor of you?” He didn’t answer. “I have a son, 16. He’s doing well in school. He wants a job this summer. Is there any possibility that you might get him a summer job?” After a minute, he said, “The medical students have a research project. Maybe he could fit in. Have him send me his school records.” He searched his pocket and handed me a card.
That evening, I pulled the card from my pocket. “Robbie,” I said proudly, “This could be a summer job for you. Send him your school records.” He read it out loud, “Fred Plum, New York Hospital.” “Is this a joke?” he said in doubt. After I shouted and threatened (恐吓) to cut off his pocket-money, Robbie promised to send off his grades the next morning.
Two weeks later, when I arrived home, my son handed me a letter from Plum. He was to phone Plum’s secretary for an interview.
Robbie got the job. The white coat he wore made him feel more important than he really was. As high school graduation neared, Plum was kind enough to write letters of recommendation (推荐) for universities. At last, Robbie was admitted to New York Medical College.
It never happened to me that a stranger should change my son’s future.
【1】The author threatened to cut off Robbie’s pocket-money probably because _________.

29、 Jack Rummler was in the hospital, but he kept emailing his journalism teacher and classmates at Boone High School in the US. He wanted to stay on top of his newspaper work and didn’t want anyone else to be stuck with the tasks he’d taken on.
“He would be in the hospital writing stories,” said Renee Burke, his teacher at the time. “He wouldn’t stop worrying about us.”
Rummler, 18, said he did this because he enjoyed high school journalism so much. “Every little aspect of it.”
He is a compassionate (有同情心的) student, Burke said, who always seems to be thinking about others, even when he faces his own challenges.
Born with spina bifida (脊柱分裂), he walks with a limp (走路一瘸一拐) and has had about 12 surgeries. Two years ago, medical problems kept him out of school for weeks.
Yet, he never wanted to be treated differently, Burke said, nor did he avoid doing anything that might be physically challenging for him, such as filming football games. During his high school life, he worked his way up from staff member to editor-in-chief of the Boone paper.
And last month, he won the “student journalist of the year” award from the Florida Scholastic Press Association.
The contest required student journalists to put together examples of their work and their ability to be “backpack journalists” who could take on many types of assignments. Rummler’s examples included stories and opinion pieces, a graphic he’d designed about school construction, and a TV commercial (广告) for the paper’s online site.
“I think one of the things that journalism taught me is to always be aware of what’s going on in the world,” he said.
His school paper publishes in print four times a year, as well as online. The last issue he worked on was about graduation, showcasing the accomplishments of top students and athletes, among other soon-to-be graduates.
In August, Rummler will start at the University of Florida, where he plans to study environmental sustainability and communications.
“Whatever he does, he’s going to be great at it,” said Bridgette Norris, the current journalism teacher at Boone, who taught him this past school year.
【1】Which of the following words best describe Rummler?
A.Hardworking and modest. B.Optimistic and creative.

A.His willingness to accept challenges.
B.His contribution to his high school paper.
C.His ability to create a variety of news works.
D.His inspiring reports about graduation.
【4】How does Norris feel about Rummler’s life in college?

The elementary means of communicating with other people is conveying messages by voice.
