26、What is the first thing you notice when you walk into a shop? The products displayed (展示) at the entrance? Or the soft background music?
But have you ever notice the smell? Unless it is bad, the answer is likely to be no. But while a shop’s scent may not be outstanding compared with sights and sounds, it is certainly there. And it is providing to be an increasing powerful tool in encouraging people to purchase.
A brand store has become famous for its distinctive scent which floats through the fairly dark hall and out to the entrance, via scent machines. A smell may be attractive but it may not just be used for freshening air. One sports goods company once reported that when it first introduced scent into its stores, customers’ intention to purchase increased by 80 percent.
When it comes to the best shopping streets in Pairs, scent is just as important to a brand’s success as the quality of its window displays and goods on sales. That is mainly because shopping is a very different experience to what it used to be.
Some years ago, the focus for brand name shopping was on a few people with sales assistants’ disproving attitude and don’t-touch-what-you-can’t-afford displays. Now the rise of electronic commerce (e-commerce电子商务) has opened up famous brands to a wider audience. But while e-shops can use sights and sounds, only bricks-and-mortar stores (实体店) can offer a full experience from the minute customers step through the door to the moment they leave. Another brand store seeks to be much more than a shop, but rather a destination. And scent is just one way to achieve this.
Now a famous store uses complex man-made smell to make sure that the soft scent of baby powder floats through the kid department, and coconut (椰子) scent in the swimsuit section. A department store has even opened a new lab, inviting customers on a journey into the store’s windows to smell books, pots and drawers, in search of their perfect scent.

27、Chinese Literature Readers' Club was recently launched in Beijing in a bid to promote the country's literature around the world.
Initiated by China Writers Association, literature organizations and Chinese literature lovers overseas, this club will provide a platform for communication about, and the exchange of, literature from home and abroad.
Speaking at the launch ceremony in August, Tie Ning, head of China Writers Association, said that reading, appreciating and exchanging ideas about literary works from a country will help to break through ignorance, isolation and prejudices, enabling people to not be blinded by stereotypical views and really be able to understand a country's historical origins, cultural context, social development and philosophical ideas.
She added that it also allows people to spiritually get close to, and understand, the rich emotional world of the people there and their vibrant life, and to feel that “we are all a part of a community with a shared future for mankind”.
Chinese literature has a history of “several thousand years”, including countless jewels that can be called an inheritance of human civilization that can be kept as permanent memories, as well as excellent modern and contemporary works that can arouse empathy in readers around the world. However, few Chinese writers are really known by readers in other countries, apart from those who have won international literary awards, Tie noted.
“It is, therefore, our common cultural mission to establish Chinese Literature Readers’ Club to introduce Chinese literature to the world, and to increase the mutual understanding and friendship between different peoples,” Tie said.
The clubs in different countries will build a bridge for overseas readers to get in touch with contemporary Chinese literature and its writers. They will organize events, both online and in-person, through local educational institutions, publishing houses, libraries, traditional media and social media networks.
So far, the club has set up branches in 12 countries-Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Turkey, Iran, Russia, Poland, Serbia, Germany, France, Britain and Chile.

28、Every year thousands of people are crowded in the city of Pamplona, in north eastern Spain, for the opportunity to run for their lives as six fighting bulls are released to charge through the town. There are dozens of injuries every year, and there have been at least 15 deaths recorded since 1910. Daniel Parisi, a physicist and computer scientist realized that the Pamplona bull-runs offered the perfect natural experiment to research the insight of the psychology of panicked crowds.
Dr. Parisi and his team went to two different rooftop locations in Pamplona in July 2019, and recorded footage(镜头)of the runners as the animals were released. A wave of people running at top speed raced past their cameras a few seconds ahead of the bulls. The researchers brought their recordings back to the lab to calculate the speed of the runners, the density(密度)of the crowd and the probability of a runner tripping and falling. They also examined the tracks of the bulls, the responses of individual runners as the bulls came near to them, and the relationship between runner-group density and speed.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the researchers found that runners picked up speed when the bulls drew near. Less expected was the finding that the speed of individual runners increased with the density of the crowd This finding is at odds with a long-held assumption in architectural and urban-design circles that people will slow their pace as group density goes up, in order to lower the risk of a collision, which could lead to a fall and, perhaps, injury or death as a runner is trampled by others.
It seems that, in the heat of the moment, people pay little attention to the danger of colliding with each other, and do not slow down. The duty falls upon urban designers to work out how best to plan the construction of future alleys, tunnels, bridges and other passages that restrict flow. The only option may well be to make them wider.
【1】Why did Daniel Parisi and his team come to the Pamplona bull-runs?
A.To cover the event
B.To work as volunteers.
C.To collect data.
D.To participate in the event
【2】What is paragraph 2 mainly about?

A.In contact with.
B.In combination with.
C.In harmony with.
D.In disagreement with.

A.They should make passages wider.
B.They should make buildings more solid.
C.They should slow down the construction of buildings.
D.They should pay less attention to density of buildings.
29、 A team of researchers led by engineers from Penn State University has created the first material that heals itself in the presence of water, according to a study published in Scientific Reports. The material, inspired by squid (鱿鱼)teeth, could be used to repair instruments in water-filled environments that are difficult to access, such as the human body, or the bottom of the sea.
The researchers had been studying squids' ring teeth, which are uniquely strong and can change state from liquid to solid in the presence of water. After testing ring teeth samples from several species of squid found all over the world, the researchers uncovered the genetic code for the proteins (蛋白质)that allow the teeth to heal themselves when broken. They then changed the genetic structure of bacteria to produce the proteins so they could conduct more tests.
The researchers then made the proteins into a rubbery plastic by mixing them with a solvent (溶 剂)and letting the solvent change into a gas. The resulting material combines a soft, shapeless part of the protein that gives the plastic its self-healing characteristics and a more structured sheet of amino acids(氨基酸)that give it a solid structure.
To test the material's strength, the researchers cut it, and then put the two pieces back together with a drop of water. They found that the material healed best at 113 degrees Fahrenheit, a little warmer than the temperature of the human body, and with slight pressure from a metal tool. The material was just as strong, and able to hold the same amount of weight, before and after it was cut.
Material that heals itself in the presence of water could expand the usability of biomedical implants (移植). Of course, this material is nowhere near ready for that application, and the researchers didn't test whether the constant presence of water degrades (降低)the plastic's ability to heal itself. The researchers next plan to study how their technology could help heal wounds.
【1】According to paragraph 3, the rubbery plastic become self-healing in combination with.
A.amino acids B.another kind of rubber
C.a mixture of gases D.some protein
【2】In paragraph 4, the researchers carried out a test to check whether the material.
A.was fit for human body
B.would melt at high temperatures
C.could be connected with the metal
D.would recover its original strength after healing itself
【3】What is the authors attitude towards the self-healing material?
A.Positive. B.Objective. C.Doubtful. D.Critical.
【4】What is the main idea of the text?
A.A kind of self-healing teeth was made from squids' ring teeth.
B.The genetic code of squids' special teeth has been uncovered.
C.Super-strong material inspired by squid teeth is self-healing.
D.A special rubbery plastic is used to replace squids' teeth.
