二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Grown-ups are often surprised by how well they remember something they learned as children but have never practiced ever since. A man who has not had a chance to go swimming for years can still swim as well as ever when he gets back in the water. He can get on a bicycle after many years and still ride away. He can play catch and hit a ball as well as his son. A mother who has not thought about the words for years can teach her daughter the poem that begins "Twinkle, twinkle, little star" or remember the story of Cinderella or Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

One explanation is the law of overlearning, which can be stated as follows: Once we have learned something, additional learning trials increase the length of time we will remember it.

In childhood we usually continue to practice such skills as swimming, bicycle riding, and playing baseball long after we have learned them. We continue to listen to and remind ourselves of words such as "Twinkle, twinkle, little star" and childhood tales such as Cinderella and Goldilocks. We not only learn but overlearn.

The multiplication tables(乘法口诀表)are an exception to the general rule that we forget rather quickly the things that we learn in school, because they are another of the things we overlearn in childhood.

The law of over learning explains why cramming(突击学习)for an examination, though it may result in a passing grade, is not a satisfactory way to learn a college course. By cramming, a student may learn the subject well enough to get by on the examination, but he is likely soon to forget almost everything he learned. A little overlearning, on the other hand, is really necessary for one's future development.

1What is the main idea of paragraph 1?

A.People remember well what they learned when they were little.

    B.Children have a better memory than grown-ups.

C.Poem reading is a good way to learn words.

D.Stories for children are easy to remember.

2The author explains the law of overlearning by_________.

A.presenting research findings B.setting down general rules

    C.making a comparison D.using examples

3According to the author, being able to use multiplication tables is_______.

A.a result of overlearning B.a special case of cramming

C.a skill to deal with math problems D.a basic step towards advanced studies

  • 27、   The human sense of smell is closely associated with our emotions. We use our limbic system — the part of the brain which is thought to control emotion — to connect our sense of smell to our feelings. Before people even recognize a smell, the deepest parts of the brain have already been stimulated (激发) and an emotional response has been triggered.

Research has shown that humans can react emotionally to smells that we can barely even notice. In one study at a major university in Chicago, three smells were given to thirty-one volunteers. The smells were of different concentrations, and some were so low that they were hardly detectable to the human nose. The different smells used were: a pleasant lemon scent (气味), a neutral anisole (中性苯甲醚), or an unpleasantly sweaty smelling acid. First, the volunteers were asked to press a button to show whether they had smelled anything or not. Then they were shown a picture of a face, which they had to rate for its likeability using a six-point marking system.

The results of the study showed that when people knew they had been exposed to a smell, it did not influence the way they judged the likeability of the faces. However, when they believed they had not smelled anything, but had actually been exposed to one of the scents, the ratings of face likeability changed. Exposure to very low concentrations of acid, so low that they were undetectable, tended to produce a negative response to a face. By comparison, after smelling lemon scent but again detecting no smell, participants rated faces as generally likeable. These findings support other research into sense perception (感觉), whether it is smell, sight, or hearing, which shows that subliminal (潜意识的) sensory information does affect our perceptions.

1Which word can best replace “triggered” in Paragraph 1?

    A.Stopped. B.Changed.

    C.Controlled. D.Started.

2What is the purpose of paragraph 2?

A.To discuss how smells are connected to emotions.

B.To explain why the research is important.

C.To describe how the study was done.

D.To report the results of the study.

3What conclusion does the author come to?

A.Pleasant and unpleasant smells have the same effect on people.

B.This study’s results agree with those of previous studies.

C.Other senses aren’t connected to perception the way smell is.

D.Scents have almost no influence on people’s emotions.

4What can be a suitable title for the text?

    A.Effects of scents on emotions

    B.What influences how we feel?

    C.Our sensitive sense of smell

    D.Techniques and senses

Driving an electric car 1 to the protection of environment, or so the marketing departments of their makers would have you believe. Yet a report which analyzes car emissions presents a rather different picture. A battery-powered car recharged with 2 generated by coal-fired power stations, it found, is likely to be more harmful. It could cause more than three times as many deaths from pollution as a 3 petrol-driven vehicle.

The study was carried out by the University of Minnesota. The researchers estimated how levels of fine particulate matter (细颗粒物) and ground-level ozone two important 4 of air pollution — would change when a car is powered by different ways.

It was no surprise that electric cars whose batteries were recharged with power from wind, solar or hydro-electric sources came out to be virtually free from harmful 5. They were estimated to cause 231 deaths over the course of a year, compared with 878 for petrol cars. Electric cars recharged with power from natural gas-fired stations were also a lot less harmful than petrol-driven ones, with 439 deaths. But if those same electric cars were recharged 6 by coal, they would be responsible for over 3,000 deaths.

Biofuels also caused more health problems than petrol. But diesel, which often  7 concern about pollution, is slightly cleaner than petrol. This is because the study assumes for all cars that emission-control technologies will be more widely used, especially particulate filters which have a remarkable effect on cleaning diesel 8. Diesel cars are also more 9 of fuel than petrol-driven ones.

Overall, the study shows that electric cars are cleaner than those traditional vehicles only if the power used to charge then is also clean. That is hardly a surprise, but the 10 of the difference is. How green electric cars really are, then, will depend mainly on where they are driven. In France, which obtains more than half of its power from nuclear station, electric cars look like a good bet. In China and some other developing countries, where a large amount of electricity is produced from coal, they may not be so environment- friendly as they are marketed.

  • 39、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

About ten years ago, my wife and I took a trip to the Grand Canyon in Arizona. I didn't like to carry all my keys in my pocket during a hike, so I took away the key to the car and left the rest in the car. When we came back, I put the key somewhere in the car without reattaching it to the key ring. Then we made a fire, cooked some food, and went to sleep in the back of the SUV.

The next morning, we were cleaning up our campsite when I saw a bird inside my car. I walked over, and it flew away. When we got in the car to go home, I couldn't find the key. We searched and searched even emptying out the car completely, but it was gone.

Then it hit me that the bird must have taken it. After all, those birds are known for stealing shiny things and decorating their nests with them. Keys are shiny. The bird was the thief! It made perfect sense to me. So I decided to find its nest.

But there is a problem: As everyone knows, the Grand Canyon is a little large in area, so I didn't like my chances of actually finding a certain nest belonging to a certain bird in a certain tree in all that space. But what other choice did I have?

My wife was not encouraging me. She said, “Are you crazy? You'll never find it! The Grand Canyon is the biggest hole on Earth!” I didn't answer and walked steadily forward until her laughter died away.

I struggled to keep hope as I searched dozens of trees and tracked every singing bird. It was like searching a needle in the sea. But, oh, how great my victory would be when I held the missing key from the bird's nest.

  • 41、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。

One day, six-year-old Pete stepped out of his house to buy a lollipop(棒棒糖). It had rained all night long. But now the sun was shining, and the wind was blowing all over the pavements, blowing the rain away. Pete got on his tricycle(三轮脚踏车) and rode away. He felt excited since this was the first time he had gone to a shop on his tricycle. “I’ll ride through every puddle(水坑),” he said to himself.

He rode right through the first puddle, and splashes of water flew up in the air. But when he looked around, the puddle was still there. Behind his tricycle was a long black line. His front wheel had made it when it came out of the puddle. Pete noticed it and he was pleased. “I meant to do that,” he laughed. (But he hadn’t really.) So he rode right through the next puddle, and his black line shone behind him. But now, when he looked around, instead of one black line there were three, because this puddle was a very big one, and all three of the wheels had gone right into it. “I’m an engine-driver,” cried Pete. “And those are my railway lines. Oooo! Ooooooo!”

And he pedaled through every puddle he could see. Sometimes it was a small puddle, and then there was only one railway line. And sometimes it was a middle-sized puddle, and then there were two railway lines. And sometimes it was a very big puddle, with a lot of sky in it, and then the whole tricycle went through it, and there were three railway lines.

Suddenly Pete remembered that he was going to the shop on the corner to buy a lollipop. He put his hand in his pocket to make sure his two pennies were still there. One of them, two of them… Pete felt each of them with his fingers. “It was good of me to remember,” he told himself. “I’m a very good rememberer.”

    Paragraph 1:

As he stopped for a break, a little cat came out of a house.

Just then a lady ran out of the house.
