二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、I was dropping my mom and sister off at the train station after their holiday visit. On the way I saw a man in a wheelchair in an empty car park. It looked like he wasn’t wearing shoes.

After dropping off my family, I went back to the park and he was still there. His chair was on the incline (斜坡) that led to the street and it looked like he was struggling with his bare (赤裸的) feet to keep the wheelchair from sliding (滑) away into the street. I asked if he wanted me to pull him back up. He nodded. I asked him to pick up his feet and pulled him back up into the park. He didn’t react when I asked if this was far enough. Then, I opened the box I had brought with me. It was a shoe box with an old pair of shoes that I had kept in my car in case I found someone in need.

You could imagine the look on his face. First it was shock, then it was pure delight. When he spoke, I couldn’t understand what he said, but I knew he was thanking me.

On the way back to my car, I saw a couple who were in need and gave them a couple of my bags for the homeless. As I drove past the first man, I saw he had already put on one shoe and was working on the second.

Keeping old pairs of shoes in my car for situations like this is so much more important than throwing them out or selling them at a yard sale.

【1】What caught the author’s attention while driving?

    A.An empty park.

    B.A holiday visit experience.

    C.A train station.

    D.A man with bare feet.

【2】What was the disabled man doing when the author saw him for the second time?

A.He was putting on a shoe.

B.He was asking passers-by for help.

C.He was preventing his chair going down.

D.He was pulling himself into the street.

【3】What made the man feel shocked?

    A.The author’s beautiful car.

B.The old shoes offered to him.

C.The questions asked by the author.

D.The author’s effort to pull him back.

【4】What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?

A.The author is always ready to help others.

B.A homeless couple asked the author for help.

C.The author was praised for his kindness.

D.The disabled man had difficulty putting on shoes.

  • 27、Grassroots evening

We want you to show your families all the pathways in your area, so let's invite your local providers to attend an open evening at your school. Each will set up a small stall (摊位) in your playground or school field with a taster activity of the activities they offer. This evening will be an opportunity to get more of your children moving more often.

    After-school activities

Things are getting back to normal and the easing of the lockdown restrictions has seen our after-school clubs coming back online. We are now running 10 clubs a week and it's clear to see how much the children have missed it. We'll be back to have around 40 clubs a week and we're in conversation with schools across the region.

    Active days

Since September many of our partner schools have asked children to come in in PE kit on their PE days. It reduces the time spent getting changed and means the pupils can stay in their PE kits after all day, which gives schools a great opportunity to create "Active Days". PE lessons and Outdoor and Adventurous can be all in an action packed.

    Spiral PE

Our partner schools have access to tools which are there to help them maximise their impact. We suggest getting the most out of the PE Rewards section—award PE star of the Week and PE Class of the week certificates and run these as competitions throughout the school. The class which wins the PE Class of the week most often wins an active prize.

We're here to help, so please don't hesitate to get in touch to find out more.

【1】In which of the following can a student enjoy the most varied group activities?

    A.Grassroots evening.

    B.After-school activities.

    C.Active days.

    D.Spiral PE.

【2】What is special about Spiral PE?

    A.It provides various competitions.

B.It promises plenty of big rewards.

    C.It values long-run class achievements.

    D.It advocates inter-school friendship.

【3】What is the purpose of the text?

A.To advertise to seek for partner schools.

B.To encourage students to take exercises.

C.To analyze the importance of PE lessons.

D.To introduce ways of selecting PE courses.

  • 28、   In the mid-1980s, a study compared mtDNA from people around the world. It found that people of African descent (后裔) had twice as many genetic differences from each other than as did others. Because mutations (基因突变) seem to occur at a steady rate over time, scientists were able to conclude that modern humans must have lived in Africa at least twice as long as anywhere else. They now calculate that all living humans descend from a single woman who lived roughly 150,000 years ago in Africa, 'Eve'. If geneticists are right, all of humanity is linked to Eve through an unbroken chain of mothers. This Eve was soon joined by 'Y-Chromosome (染色体) Adam', the genetic father of us all, also from Africa. DNA studies have confirmed that all the people on Earth, with all their shapes and colors, can trace their ancestry to ancient Africans.

What seems certain is that at a remarkably recent date—probably between 50,000 and 70,000 years ago—one small group of people, the ancestors of modern humans outside of Africa, left Africa for western Asia, either by migrating around the northern end of the Red Sea or across its narrow southern opening.

Once in Asia, genetic evidence suggests, the population split. One group stopped temporarily in the Middle East, while the other commenced a journey which would last tens of thousands of years. Moving a little further with each new generation, they followed the coast around the Arabian Peninsula, India, and Southeast Asia, all the way to Australia. 'The movement was probably unnoticeable,' says Spencer Wells. 'It was less of a journey and probably more like walking a little farther down the beach to get away from the crowd.'

Although archeological evidence of this 13,000-kilometer (8,000-mile) migration from Africa to Australia has almost completely disappeared, genetic traces of the group that made the trip do exist. They have been found in the DNA of native peoples in the Andaman Islands near Myanmar, in Malaysia, and in Papua New Guinea, and in the DNA of nearly all Australian aborigines (土著). Modern discoveries of 45,000-year-old bodies in Australia, buried at a site called Lake Mungo, provide some physical evidence for the theories as well.

People in the rest of Asia and Europe share different but equally ancient mtDNA and mutations. The mutations which they possess show that most are descendants of the group that stayed in the Middle East for thousands of years before moving on. Perhaps about 40,000 years ago, modern humans first advanced into Europe.

1What happened to the first group of humans that moved from Africa into Asia?

A.Most of the migrants turned back into Africa.

    B.They separated into two groups.

C.Most of the migrants moved directly into Europe.

D.They stayed in the Middle East for tens of thousands of years.

2Which of the following is cited as evidence for the great migration to Australia?

A.Discovery of human remains in Australia

B.DNA of people in Southeast Africa

    C.DNA of immigrants to Australia

D.Discoveries from modern societies in Asia

3The title for this reading could be _______.

    A.Finding Y-Chromosome Adam

    B.Who were the First Humans?

C.The Discovery of DNA in Africa

    D.Migrating Out of Africa

  • 29、   Pamela Simpson is 53,“not sporty” and has suffered from asthma(哮喘) all her life. Two years ago her son Jay-Teale, now 10, took up BMX(自行车越野赛).“I enjoyed watching him and thought I'd like to try it,” Simpson recalls. “But I didn't want to embarrass myself. I hadn't ridden for over 40 years.”

Then she noticed a session for women and girls at Burgess Park BMX Track in Peckham, south-east London, where Jay-Teale trained. This season Simpson raced at the London BMX series and finished third in her category.

“It was the most worrying experience of my life. But it was also exhilarating,” she says cheerfully. “My son is proud of me. We now share a real love for the sport. It has brought us closer together.”

Since becoming part of the Olympic Games in 2008, the popularity of BMX has risen. A program introduced in London in 2011 by the sports development charity Access Sport has seen tracks built in several London regions, backed up with investment in coaching, and the program is being rolled out to Bristol.

Mavolwane Wright's children Skye,11 and Xander,10 are sponsored riders who have represented Great Britain in every world championship since 2014. Mavolwane Wright says she was motivated to start BMX herself out of an interest aroused by watching so much of it. “It's an eye-opener to share your children's interests,” she explains. “You comprehend what they go through in a much more direct way. It adds another dimension to your relationship.”

It is also a high-impact sport and the risks are fairly obvious. “I totally get the fear,” says Emma Budgens, 51, a BMX exercise coach and cycling instructor. “It's the fear of doing something new, of getting hurt. But I say, ‘Come and give it a try.’ The chance of having an accident is slim, and you can spend time on the flat to improve your confidence.”

1What can we learn about Pamela Simpson from the first two paragraphs?

A.She tended to be inactive. B.She performed poorly in the race.

C.She used to feel awkward in public. D.She trained at Burgess Park BMX Track.

2What does the underlined word “exhilarating” in Paragraph 3 mean?

    A.Annoying. B.Inspiring.

    C.Thrilling. D.Challenging.

3What benefit did Simpson and Wright get from BMX?

    A.More life skills. B.Stronger will.

    C.More confidence in themselves. D.Better parent-child relationships.

4What does Emma Budgens think of BMX?

A.Risky but actually secure. B.Demanding but open to all.

    C.Competitive but instructive. D.Pleasant but time-consuming.

DeepMind’s AlphaGo program is the most 7effort yet, using a complex system of deep neural networks and machine learning; it beat European champion Fan Hui last year, but Lee Se-dol is another 8 rival entirely.

“I don’t regret accepting this challenge,”said Lee.“I am in shock, I admit that, but what’s done is done. I enjoyed this game and look forward to the next. I think I failed on the opening layout so if I do a better job on the opening aspect I think I will be able to increase my 9 of winning.”Lee was surprised both by how strong AlphaGo’s opening was, and by some 10moves.

  • 35、Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in the blanks to make the passage coherent and grammatically correct. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word. For the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank.

    My daughter

(A story told by a father, a famous actor)

My wife and I only had the one child. We had Amy.

I see her as my best friend. I think she’d always come to me first if she had a problem. We have the same sense of humor, and share interests. 1 I don’t mind animals, she’s completely fascinated with them, and she has always had dogs, cats, horses, and goldfish in her life.

We were 2 (close) when she was about four, which I think is a lovely age for a child. They know the parents best, and don’t have outside contacts. She must have grown up suddenly when she went to school, because I remember her growing away from her family slightly. Any father who has a teenager daughter comes across an extraordinary collection of people, and there seemed to be an endless stream of strange young men 3 (come) through our house. By the time I learned their names they 4 (go) away and I had to start learning a new lot.

I wanted more than anything else for her to be happy in 5 she was doing, and I was prepared to pull strings to help her on her way. When she left a good school she decided she wanted to become an actress so I got her into drama school. It wasn’t to her liking so she joined a theatre group and began doing bits and pieces in films. She was doing well, but then gave it up. She probably found it boring. Then she took up social work, and finally went to work 6a designer and he became her husband. And that’s really the story of her life. She must be happy with him—they’re always together.

We have such similar tastes in books and music 7 I used to take her to see an opera, which is my big passion. However, I don’t think she likes it very much. She doesn’t come with me anymore.

I don’t think she’s a big television watcher. She knows when I’m on the television, and she 8 watch, but I don’t know. It’s not the kind of thing she tells me.

We’re very grateful for Amy. She’s a good daughter as daughters go. We’re looking forward to being grandparents.

  • 39、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Located halfway up the Italy’s Apennine Mountain, about 100 miles northeast of Rome, the Hotel Rigopiano has never been easy to reach. But its isolation(隔绝)only adds to its appeal, attracting a great number of tourists.

Snow began to fall across the Apennines in January and lasted for days. From his home in the Rome suburbs, Matrone watched the weather with concern. He and his wife, Cicioni, had planned an overnight getaway to the hotel. But now he wondered whether they should go. After phoning the hotel, they decided to make the trip. By the time they neared the hotel six hours later, they were battling a snowstorm. When they finally arrived, they were both cold and exhausted. They checked into their room and went to bed early.

As they awoke the next day, they discovered that their difficulty had worsened overnight. The cars in the parking lot were invisible. The phone and power lines were down. They were having breakfast when the hotel began to shake. An earthquake with a magnitude(震级)of 5.7 had struck the mountain. “Get out of here!” Matrone shouted to his wife. They headed quickly to the parking lot, where others were digging their cars.Fifteen minutes after the first earthquake, another quake hit, this one measuring 5.6.

With a dozen vehicles freed by noon, the guests set off down the driveway. But when they reached the main road, the path was blocked by a six-foot-high wall of snow.Matrone climbed out of his car and investigated it. There was no road in sight, “We’re trapped!” he told his wife. So they had no choice but to make their way back to the hotel so as to be saved.

As it was getting dark, they managed to be back. That was when the snow on the mountain began to slide. They heard the avalanche (雪崩) before they saw it. The avalanche gathered speed and size, grabbing rocks and trees and anything else in its way down the mountain, tearing the hotel from its foundation. When the avalanche came to a stop, those caught inside the hotel were left buried in the icy rocks and ruins.
