二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Social media is one of the fastest-growing industries in today’s world. Your friends’ lives may look more exciting than yours on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, but a new research shows it is because they are faking(伪造) it.

A recent survey has found around two-thirds of people on social media post images to their personal information to make their lives seem more adventurous. And more than three quarters of those asked said they judged their peers based on what they saw on their Instagrm, Snapehat or Facebook pages.

The British survey, by smart phone maker HTC, found that, in order to make our own pages and lives appear more exciting, six percent also said they had borrowed items to include in the images in order to pass them off as their own. More than half of those surveyed said they posted images of items and places purely to show off, causing jealousy among friends and family.

Behavioral psychologist Hemmings said the trend was unsurprising due to the rise of social media. “We’re living in a world instant communication.” she said. “Fashion and style used to live and die in magazines; now people are in search of authentic, peer-to-peer recommendations as well, making social media an equal power house to magazines and newspaper.”

“With images being shared in an instant, we desire to know what our friends are wearing, or what super stars are buying, as soon as they have got them.” Such is the influence of social media sites like Instagram, 76 percent of those asked also said seeing items on social influences them to buy them, with men more likely to take style advice and buy what they see.

1How do some people make their lives appear more exciting?

    A. By buying pictures.   B. By posting images.

    C. By making up stories.   D. By risking their lives.

2What does the underlined word “jealousy” in Paragraph 3 mean?

    A. Adventure.   B. Conflict

    C. Envy   D. Misunderstanding

3What can we learn from Hemmings?

    A. The trend reflects the development of social media.

    B. Fashion and style no longer exist in magazines.

    C. Magazines and newspapers are less important.

    D. The trend is beyond people’s expectation.

4Which of the following best describes social media like Instagram?

    A. Positive   B. Creative

    C. Persuasive   D. Honest

  • 22、   31stOctober —— A team of British explorers has announced they are going to the North Pole to measure the ice cap’s thickness. The exploration will take ground-based readings (仪表的读数) of an ice formation which most scientists agree is shrinking at an alarming rate.

Explorer Pen Hadow’s three-member team will pull a sled-fixed radar device, which measures ice density every eight centimeters, 2,000 kilometers across the Arctic and will produce millions of readings.

They will leave in February, 2008 and will face temperatures of -50℃ on a journey that will take up to 120 days. They have been testing their equipment in Britain and Canada.

Hadow is excited about the prospects (前景), “For the first time we will be able to transmit video images — webcam film of the expedition — as it unfolds so people can track us, and the whole idea is to engage as many people as we can in what we’re doing.”

New fallen snow on top of the ice makes ground-based measurements more accurate than satellite data.

“It has been in the planning stage for a while,” said Hadow. “We spent the last two years developing impulse radar (冲击雷达), which normally is about 100 kilograms and hangs under an aircraft and so on. We’ve managed to get it down to about 4 kilograms. It’s the size of a briefcase and we are dragging it behind the sled as we go.”

The ice cap shrank enough in 2007 so that a pathway through the cap known as the Northwest Passage opened up during the melting of the Arctic summer.

Cambridge University’s Joao Rodrigues explains, “Thickness of the ice cap will determine how much solar radiation will be reflected and the heat exchange between the ocean and the atmosphere and it is thus a vital component (成分) of climate models.”

If warming trends continue, some experts predict that the Arctic Ocean could be ice-free during the summer within a few decades.

1What would be the best title for the text?

    A.Exploration to the North Pole.

    B.Arctic ice cap shrinking.

    C.Arctic ice survey announced.

    D.Ground-based measurements of ice.

2What is special about the exploration?

A.It will be broadcast live on the Internet.

    B.Explorers will use a sled-fixed radar device.

C.Explorers will travel in extremely cold conditions.

    D.Ground-based measurements are more accurate.

3What is the purpose of the exploration?

A.To measure the ice cap’s thickness.

B.To study whether ice will disappear in the Arctic.

C.To make a film about the Arctic exploration.

D.To make people interested in what they are doing.

4It can be inferred from the passage that ________.

A.ice in the Arctic will disappear in ten years

B.the exploration will last for half a year

C.Hadow spent two years developing a kind of radar, which is about 100 kilograms

D.if there is snow on ice, satellites can’t measure the ice thickness accurately enough

5From the passage, we learn that ________.

A.the explorers will measure ice density every other centimeter

B.people will be able to follow the explorers and see what they are doing

C.people could go through the Northwest Passage in the 2007 Arctic summer

D.the equipment that Hadow’s team use will be tested in the United States

  • 23、On the eve of our daughters’ weddings, I gave both of them what I considered to be excellent marital advice: never leave your husband unsupervised (无人监督的) with pruning shears (修枝剪).

If only I had taken my own advice. I recently let my guard down. Thirty-some years of marriage can do that to a woman. Give a man pruning shears and electric trimmers (电动修剪器) and he will give new meaning to “armed and dangerous.”

One day earlier this year, my husband said that the crab apple tree was dead.

“Why do you think it is dead?” I asked.

“Look at it. There’s not a leaf on it.”

“There’s not a leaf on anything. It’s March,” I said.

“It looked sick last fall and with this bitter winter we had, I’m convinced it’s dead.”

The truth is he’s never liked the crab apple. Sure, it has beautiful blooms in the spring, but then it gets a disease, the leaves curl, and it drops those little apples that sit on the driveway.

Each passing week he pronounced the tree dead. Eventually I began to believe him. Though he agreed it would be a regrettable loss, there was a twinkle in his eye. He armed himself a couple of weeks ago and began trimming. A branch here, a branch there, a small limb, then a large limb. I watched and then decided to check the wood on some of the branches closer to the trunk. I broke one off and saw green.

The crab apple was not dead. It just hadn’t had time to leaf out. The tree was now falling to one side, but it was not dead. I would have told him so, but he had moved on to a maple. Once the man starts, he can’t stop. One trim leads to another.

    “Please, stop!” I called.

He smiled and nodded, but he couldn’t hear because he had started the hedge (树篱) trimmers and was getting ready to fix a line of hedges.

    Zip (飕飕声), zip, zip.

“What do you think?” he shouted.

“It’s supposed to be a privacy hedge; now all that will be private are our ankles.”

He started the trimmers again. “Stop!” I called, “Come back!”

    “Why?” he shouted.

    “You’re in the neighbor’s yard.”

【1】By saying “if only I had taken my own advice.” the author means that _____.

    A. she should have kept a closer watch on her husband

    B. she feels regretful about her marriage after many years

    C. she didn’t follow her own advice about pruning shears

    D. she shouldn’t have given that marital advice to her daughters

【2】We can learn from the article that the author’s husband ______.

    A. has a great talent for gardening

    B. had never used pruning shears before

    C. mistook their crab apple tree for a maple tree

    D. nearly ruined their neighbor’s garden

【3】What does the article mainly talk about?

    A. Why husbands shouldn’t be left to trim trees alone.

    B. Why the author’s husband insisted on trimming their crab apple tree.

    C. How the author has survived her “thirty-some” years of marriage.

    D. How the author’s husband killed their crab apple tree.

【4】What is the tone of the article?

    A. Anxious.   B. Humorous.

    C. Serious.     D. Critical.

  • 24、Fewer than 250 people have feasted their eyes on the Titanic since it was discovered on the seabed of the North Atlantic Oceans in 1985, but a small number of citizen explorers will make the epic two-mile journey to the depths this year.

OceanGate Expeditions announced its second annual expedition to the wreck in the summer of 2022. The Titanic Expedition is conducted as a series of eight-day missions starting in May and ending in June 2022, and each seat costs $250, 000.

Aaron Newman, OceanGate Expedition Mission Specialist during the 2021 trip, said in a statement: “This is one of the most interesting and unique experiences I have ever had. Less than around 200 people have ever been down to the Titanic and seen the wreck in 110 years. Even diving to almost 4000 meters in a submersible (潜水器) is an experience onto itself. That’s what life is about.”

The citizen explorers will begin their adventure by sailing on the expedition ship from St. John’s in Newfoundland, Canada, to the site of the Titanic wreckage, located 370 miles away. The Titan submersible is equipped with the latest camera technologies to capture ultra-high-resolution imagery (超高清影像) that will help determine the wreck’s rate of decay and assess the marine life that dwell on it. An experienced submersible pilot, P. H. Nargeolet said in a statement: “We have a lot of room inside the Titan submersible. We can have five people in the sub and there is a big view port.”

The Titanic, which was called the “unsinkable ship”, went down on April 14, 1912, four days into her first voyage from Southampton, England to New York. The giant ship collided with an iceberg and in the end, 1,517 of the 2,224 passengers and crew aboard died.

According to the National Oceanic and Atomspheric Adminstration, te ship is likely to collapse within the next 40 years.

【1】What did Aaron Newman think of the 2021 expedition to the wreck of Titanic?

    A.It was fantastic.

    B.It was expensive.

    C.It was demanding.

    D.It was worthless.

    A.The rate of decay.

    B.The wreck.

    C.The high-tech camera.

    D.The Titan submersible.

【3】What do we know about the 2022 Titanic expedition?

A.Explorers will go to the depth of 370 meters under the sea.

B.Explorers can learn about the marine life on the wreck through a high-resolution telescope.

C.Explorers will have a series of eight-day missions in the fall of 2022.

D.Explorers will share a big view port in the spacious submersible.

【4】What’s the purpose of paragraph 5?

    A.To present a detail.

    B.To introduce the expedition.

    C.To add the background information.

D.To attract people to buy the 2022 trip.
