When my friend put out the idea of homeschooling to her parents, the first reaction they gave was, “You are cutting the child off the world.” Did the child really get cut off or did the child socialize better?

The moment we hear of homeschooling, we think the child will have no opportunities to interact with peers. However, in my friend’s opinion, we forget that when attending a regular school, the child is not into socializing all the while. The child is confined to so many other activities. Studies take a major role in a child’s life. The child hardly has the time to interact at school.

The child might be meeting and studying along with many peers; however, how many kids interact with all the kids in a class? But in homeschooling system, as my friend mentioned, the kid has all the time and can plan his day accordingly. During the day the child studies just like other school-going kids but with no burden of homework and project work, the child has so much free time in the evening as to effectively interact and play with peers. The quality time the child spends in education is really impressive.

Homeschooled kids have the opportunity to socialize more often as they have a lot of time in their hands. They can also make socializing a regular habit. Just as my friend said, her child goes to a neighboring park almost every day and has a set of friends who go there daily. Other children get back home to finish off homework and project work whereas her child who is already through with studies gets the opportunity to spend time with family members.

When I heard this, I really felt how lucky the child was. Definitely the child had a better opportunity to socialize when compares with my kids. However, I might not consider homeschooling for my kid, as I am so used to the traditional schooling system and feel regular schooling the safest bet.

1What is the author’s attitude towards his friend’s idea of homeschooling?

    A. Surprised. B. Interested.

    C. Negative.   D. Confident.

2The author’s purpose in writing the passage is to _________.

    A. explain what homeschooling is.

    B. express his views on homeschooling.

    C. share his ways of teaching his children.

    D. promote homeschooling.

3The underlined word “confined” in the Para.2 can be replaced by _______.

    A. free   B. restricted

    C. devoted     D. accustomed

4 According to the author what is the biggest advantage of homeschooling children?

    A. They can be better at socializing.

    B. They can be more popular.

    C. They will become braver.

    D. They can study better.

5 How does the passage mainly develop?

    A. By following the order of importance.

    B. By following the order of time

    C. By presenting facts.

    D. By making comparison.

  • 24、Nobel prize-winners, legendary (传奇的) authors, and famous scientists — you might think all these people were born to be creative. However, that's not always the case.

While well-known figures like Pablo Picasso and Albert Einstein did their most significant (重要的) work in their youth, famous American poet Robert Frost and English-born natural scientist Charles Darwin were known as "late bloomers" – people whose talents were not noticeable until later in life.

This idea of "peaking" at different times inspired new research from the United States. "Many people believe that creativity is exclusively (独有地) associated (有联系的) with youth, but it really depends on what kind of creativity you're talking about," said Bruce Weinburg, a professor of economics at the University of Chicago and co-author of the study.

According to the study, published earlier this month in the journal De Economist, there are two types of people: conceptual (概念的) and experimental thinkers.

To reach this conclusion, researchers took the 31 previous winners of the Nobel Prize in economics and arranged them according to when they did their most significant work, to identify (识别) their creative peaks.

Some peaked from ages 25-29. Classified as conceptual thinkers, these people think outside of the box, coming up with new ideas before they become used to the conventional way of doing things.

The second creative peak came with economists in their 50s. These are experimental thinkers who have been in their field for a long time. This allows them to learn from errors and experiment with different processes, before eventually finding new solutions.

"Whether you hit your creative peak early or late in your career depends on whether you have a conceptual or experimental approach," said Weinburg. He added that their study isn't limited to economics, saying it can apply to other creative disciplines (知识领域). So if you're struggling to come up with new ideas, don't panic. Your creative peak may be yet to arrive.

【1】What did the study from the US find?

A.Young people are not necessary more creative than the old people.

B.Most people take a conceptual approach when thinking.

C.One's creative peak is related to their job type.

D.Conceptual and experimental thinkers hit their peaks at different times.

【2】What does the underlined word "conventional" mean in context?

    A.Easy.

    B.Unusual.

    C.Traditional.

    D.Appropriate.

【3】What do we know about experimental thinkers?

A.Their talents usually bloom in their 20s.

B.They are good at doing experiments.

C.They work out new methods based on experience.

D.They are more successful than conceptual thinkers.

【4】What would Weinberg probably agree with?

A.It's difficult to find one's talent in later years.

B.More research needs to be done about creative peaks.

C.Conceptual thinkers could be more successful in the art field.

D.Experimental thinkers from other fields may be most successful in their 50s.

  • 25、Years ago, I lived in the English midlands and would walk the same route along the local canal each evening. On winter mornings, I would see the _________ sight of bird flocks dancing across the landscape, a distant cacophony (刺耳的嘈杂声) _________ above the fields. They were jackdaws (寒鸦), the smallest member of the crow family.

Research led by Masters student Alex Dibnah asked: Why are jackdaws so loud when they _________? Then he began to work with a team. The team’s _________ was that the morning calls might be a jackdaw version of “_________”. Each individual’s call might _________ as an “I’m in!” helping them coordinate (协调) their _________.

To test this, the researchers artificially _________ call levels during the jackdaws’ morning cacophony using speakers at their sleeping sites. When extra calls were played, the jackdaws _________ earlier, showing they use calls as a check-in system.

Individual jackdaws __________ from leaving with the flock because they get more social information like where to find food, they can maximize their time spent finding food, and they’re less __________ being attacked. This sort of decision-making isn’t __________ to jackdaws — it’s been reported in other species as well.

So, the cacophony of jackdaws in the morning is a clever solution to __________ a large group. If you’re __________ by the noise, find comfort in the fact that the louder they get, the sooner they’ll leave you in __________.

A poor boy named Howard Kelly made his living by selling newspapers from door to door to pay his way through school. After a full day of working hard he had only too little bit of change left to get some food.

Starving and feeling low-spirited, he couldn’t walk anymore. After going through some scenarios (情节) in his mind, he was hoping for some kindness from the people living in the next house where he decided to ask for a meal. As he approached the door and rang the bell, he kept practicing his words for his request.

However. he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door. With much hesitation, he asked for a glass of water instead of a meal. The woman remembered seeing this young boy many times working hard going up and down the streets knocking on doors. She thought he looked hungry so she brought him a large glass of milk instead of water. The boy drank it slowly and then asked how much he owed.

“You don’t owe me anything,” she replied with a gentle smile. “I know you helped many people in the neighborhood. Mother has taught us that kindness is repaid with kindness.” “Then thank you from my heart.” Right there and then, Howard felt stronger and more confident as he found some hope in this kind of action.

Years’ later that young woman became so critically ill that she was sent to the bigger city where specialists were called to study her rare disease. The expense was beyond her family, but no one gave up. Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation, When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. Immediately he rose and went down the hall of the hospital to her room. Dressed in his doctor’s gown he went in to see her.
