  • 21、   The efforts of authorities in Yunnan to safely guide the elephants back home began to show signs of success in early June. After arriving in the area near Kunming in early June, the elephants finally turned around and began to move southward. "Asian elephants need to live in warm areas and the further north they travel, the less friendly the climate will be for them," said Chen Mingyong, a professor of ecology and the environment at Yunnan University. "We need to guide them toward their proper habitat before the temperature begins to go down."

The elephants' return journey has not been much different to their journey north, adding more details to the elephant family drama. On June 6, a bull elephant under 10 years old suddenly broke away from the herd(象群)and made off on its own. Shen Qingzhong, head of the Institute of Ecology of Xishuangbanna, National Nature Reserve, guessed the act may have occurred because the young elephant is in the rebellious(叛逆)puberty time.

Right now, the 14 remaining elephants are lingering in the mountainous area surrounding Shijie Township in the city of Yuxi. They have been there for over eight days, with the young elephant remaining at around 20 km away with no sign of returning soon.

"Maybe the 14 are waiting for the single elephant to rejoin," Shen said. "Or maybe there are more diverse foods in the farmland in this area and they want to enjoy it longer."

Professor Chen explained that the command center's intention is to guide the elephants back to Pu'er or Xishuangbanna. "For that to happen, they must pass through the Honghe River," Chen said. "The water level in the river is currently higher due to the rains and the elephants might have to wait in Yuxi for a long time. If that is the case, it might be winter before the elephants finally return to their original habitat."

【1】Why were the elephants guided to move south?

    A.Because of the food.

    B.Because of the climate.

    C.Because of the scientists.

    D.Because of the safety.

    【2】What happened on June 6th?

A.The young elephant separated itself from the family.

B.The elephants' return journey had been so different.

C.The Institute added more drama to the journey.

D.The National Nature Reserve drove the elephant away.

【3】What does the underlined part "lingering" refer to?

    A.lining.

    B.moving off.

    C.wandering.

    D.sleeping over.

【4】What would be the best title for this passage?

    A.The Journey North.

    D.Kunming, Yuxi or Pu'er?

  • 22、The world is on a fast track toward an autonomous future. From off-road tractors and rural transit systems to air vehicles and space exploration, automation will enhance safety, increase efficiency and improve people’s lives. The more we can automate, the more we can protect people’s life and happiness.

To make the autonomous future safe and secure, manufacturers and operators will need reliable, assured positioning, said Michael Ritter, president of Hexagon’s Autonomy & Positioning division. At the HxGN LIVE Global 2022 event, he gave an overview of assured positioning and demonstrated how it provides the foundation for safe autonomy.

Ritter explained how positioning technologies can enable the future of autonomy for good publicity across industries including agriculture, mining and automotive. “We’ve all heard about autonomy,” he said. “What’s one of the big problems there? It doesn’t always work as advertised.” He mentioned Tesla’s AutoPilot as an example. “In our industry, we need to have autonomy solutions that we can trust.” “If that is not a hundred percent waterproof, crystal clear, and protected from outside interference (干扰) and cybersecurity threats, you can’t trust that positioning,” he said. “We have to know where we are at all times, and we cannot have that signal falsified (歪曲).”

While Ritter doesn’t think he’ll see the universal use of autonomous vehicles in passenger traffic during his lifetime “because laws will be in the way.” he said. “Applications in off-road autonomy — construction, mining and agriculture — are here today, which all take place in controllable spaces; laws are not such a big problem.” he said. “This is happening right now. We don’t have to wait 10 to 20 years for that.”

However, a big safety challenge in expanding autonomy is anticipating “all the stuff that could happen once in a lifetime,” Ritter said. Those can be overcome by real-life testing, multiplying that with simulation (模拟) “a hundred million times over,” and then going “back into real life” and performing “real, extreme testing.”

    【1】What’s Ritter’s purpose of mentioning Tesla’s AutoPilot?

    A.To show its good publicity.

    B.To support its assured positioning.

C.To put forward reliable autonomy solutions.

D.To serve as a reminder for the autonomy-related industries.

【2】What is Ritter’s attitude towards the development of autonomy according to paragraph 4?

    A.Cautious.

    B.Optimistic.

    C.Doubtful.

    D.Objective.

【3】What does the underlined word “that” in the last paragraph refer to?

    A.Real and extreme testing.

    B.Real-life testing.

    C.A big safe challenge.

    D.Expanding autonomy.

【4】What is the text mainly about?

    A.Big challenges for future automation.

B.The impact of automation on daily life.

    C.Necessary regulations for safe automation.

    D.Different fields of automation development.

  • 24、Fathers can give their children an educational advantage at primary school by reading, drawing and playing with them, according to a newly published report. Research led by the University of Leeds has found that children do better at primary school if their fathers regularly spend time with them on interactive engagement activities like reading, playing, telling stories, drawing and singing.

Analysing primary school test scores for five- and seven-year-olds, the researchers used a representative sample of nearly 5,000 mother-father households in England from the Millenium Cohort Study.

According to the research, dads who regularly drew, played and read with their three-year-olds helped their children do better at school by age five. Dads being involved at age five also helped improve scores in seven-year-olds’ Key Stage Assessments.

Dr Helen Norman, who led the research, said, “Mothers still tend to assume the primary care r role and therefore tend to do the most childcare, but if fathers enthusiastically engage in childcare too, it significantly increases the likelihood of children getting better grades in primary school. This is why encouraging and supporting fathers to share childcare with the mother, from an early stage in the child’s life, is critical.”

Dads’ involvement impacted positively on their children’s school achievement regardless of the child’s gender (性别), race, age in the school year and household income, according to the report.

There were different effects when mums and dads took part in the same activities—the data showed that mums had more of an impact on young children’s emotional and social behaviors than educational achievement.

The researchers recommend that dads carve out as much time as they can to engage in interactive activities with their children each week. For busy, working dads, even just ten minutes a day could potentially have educational benefits. They also recommend that schools and early years education providers routinely take both parents’ contact details (where possible) and develop strategies to engage fathers.

【1】What can we learn about the research?

A.Mums had more impact on young children’s educational achievement.

B.Dads’ positive impact on kids learning had nothing to do with the gender.

C.Dads’ involvement at age 3 helped promote academic performance at age 7.

D.The researchers investigated nearly 5,000 single parent families in England.

【2】Who may give his children the most educational advantage at primary school?

A.A father who is totally busy with his work.

B.A father who is really good at playing basketball.

C.A father who has absolutely low household income.

D.A father who actively shares childcare with the mother.

【3】What advice do the researchers offer on children’s early years education?

A.Dads should spare ten minutes a day to apparently benefit kids.

B.Dads should maximize time to interact with their kids each week.

C.Schools should generate strategies to involve parents in management.

D.Schools should regularly contact parents to develop mother-engagement.

【4】What is the main idea of the text?

A.It’s crucial that fathers can have a lasting impact on children.

B.Young children can get brilliant childhood with father-engagement.

C.Fathers and mothers should share childcare in family early education.

D.Young children do better at school if their dads read and play with them.

  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

As a woman walked down the streets one day on a cold day in February, she spotted a beggar. The man looked dirty, and didn’t even wear a proper coat. Every passer-by looked at him with contempt. Not like they had anything against him, but merely because of who he was: a dirty beggar.

“Sir? Are you all right?” The lady asked him. The old beggar thought that this well-dressed, obviously wealthy lady, was laughing at him.“ Leave me alone!” he shouted. She did not move.“ Are you hungry?” she asked with a gentle smile.“ No, I’ve just had lunch with the president.” the beggar replied sarcastically. Her smile did not fade, and she tried to pick him up.“ What do you think you are doing, woman!” the beggar cried.

“Is there a problem ma’am?” a passing policeman asked.“ Not at all, officer. I’m just trying to get this man on his feet.” the woman replied. Surprised, the policeman said:“ That’s old Jack, he has been here for years. What have you got to do with him?” “I am taking him to the cafeteria to get warm and eat something.” the woman answered.

Angry, the old beggar now shouted:“ Are you crazy!? I don’t want to go in there!” But then he felt strong hands lifting him up.“ Let me go, officer. I didn’t do anything!” “Don’t miss this good chance to feed yourself, Jack.” the officer advised. Together, they dragged Jack into the cafeteria. She stared at Jack and said:“ Jack, do you remember me?” “Well, you do look familiar.” Jack said while examining her face.
