21、Alex Scheffler is an award-winning illustrator(插图画家), best known for his work on children’s books. Here he talks about books that changed his life.
Petzi auf der Robinson Insel by Carla Hansen, illustrated by Vilh Hansen
This is one of a series of books that I loved as a child growing up in Hamburg in the sixties. I seem to remember getting them sometimes after unpleasant visits to the dentist! The Petzi books described the adventures of a little bear, who was fond of pancakes, and his exploration of the world together with his friends, a penguin and a seal.
I think they may have influenced my way of seeing the world as I still prefer to draw animals with clothes on now!
I Am Papa Snap and These Are my Favorite No Such Stories written and illustrated by Tomi Ungerer
When I was a teenager, I discovered cartoonists and illustrators like Edward Gorey, Sempe, Bosc and others, but most of all I loved the art of Tomi Ungerer, a French artist with strong political views—anti-war, anti-racist, anti-nationalist. Ungerer was a passionate European, and spoke three languages: none of them perfect he claimed, but then he could draw—a universally understood means of expression! I think he was probably the strongest influence on my own work as an illustrator.
Cats, Dogs, Men, Women, Ninnies & Clowns: The Lost Art of Wiliam Steig by Jeanne Steig
When I discovered the work of William Steig I was already working as an illustrator. He worked as a cartoonist for the New Yorker all his life and came to writing and illustrating children’s books when he was in his sixties. I love his picture books: Solomon the Rusty Nail, Sylvester and the Magic Pebble, Gorky Rises, Brave Irene—more dressed animals!
This book, however, is slightly different as it was published after his death and contains about 400 unpublished drawings. I was delighted when I discovered it in a second-hand bookshop on Charing Cross Road.

22、If you have always suspected that you might just be a mosquito magnet (招蚊子的人),scientists now have evidence for you: Mosquitoes indeed are attracted to certain humans more than others, according to a new study.
A research team at Rockefeller University sought to identify why certain people seem to draw more mosquitoes than others. Over the course of three years, researchers asked a group of 64 volunteers to wear nylon stockings on their arms for six hours a day over multiple days. Maria Elena De Obaldia, the study’s first author, constructed a glass container in which researchers put two of the stockings. The study team then released yellow fever mosquitoes into the container and observed which stocking drew more insects.
This test allowed researchers to separate study participants into mosquito magnets, whose stockings drew lots of mosquitoes, and low at tractors, who didn’t seem attractive to the insects. The scientists examined carefully the skin of the mosquito magnets and found 50 molecular compounds (分子化合物) that were higher in these participants than the others.
“We didn’t hold certain expectations about what we would find,” said Vosshall, one of the researchers. But one difference was particularly distinctive: The mosquito magnets had much higher rates of carboxylic acid (羧酸) on their skin than the low at tractors. Carboxylic acids are found in sebum, the oily substance that creates a barrier and helps protect our skin.
“The carboxylic acids are large molecules,” Vosshall explained. “They’re not that smelly by themselves,” she said. But beneficial bacteria on the skin chew on these acids that produce the characteristic smell of humans, which may be what attracts mosquitoes, according to Vosshall.
Carboxylic acids are just one piece of the puzzle in explaining how the annoying insects might choose their targets. Body heat and the carbon dioxide we release when we breathe also attract mosquitoes to humans.
Scientists still don’t know why carboxylic acids seem to attract mosquitoes so strongly. The next step might be to explore the effects of reducing carboxylic acids on the skin.
【1】Why did the researchers carry out the test in the container?
A.To free people from mosquitoes.
B.To identify mosquito magnets.
C.To distinguish certain mosquitoes.
D.To better attract other insects.
【2】What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?

D.The finding of the study.
【3】What makes carboxylic acids smelly?
A.Beneficial bacteria.
B.Body heat.
C.Carbon dioxide.
D.Human sweat.
【4】What can we infer about mosquito magnets from the text?
A.They never wear stockings in summer.
B.They feature higher body temperature.
C.Their root cause has remained unclear.
D.Their daily routine differs from others’.
23、Rembrandt van Rijn’s most famous work, The Nightwatch was commanded in 1639 by Franz Ban-ninck Cocq, the captain of Amsterdam’s civil army, and portrayed him and his 17 members: It was completed in 1642 and spent more than 70 years in the hall of the civil army it was based on.
In 1715, Dutch officials decided to move the painting to the city hall in Amsterdam’s Royal Palace. The almost 12-foot by 14-foot art work was too large to go through the doors, so the movers decided to cut the edges. The strips (边条) were never recovered. However, art historians have been aware of the missing items thanks to a smaller copy of the original scene painted by Dutch artist Gerrit Lundens.
In 2019, officials of Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum decided to recreate the missing sections. The team, led by scientist, Robert Erdmann, turned to a new AI algorithm (算法), which helps computers figure out what images may have once looked like. The scientists scanned images of the original and Lundens’ painting to the computer. The AI was able to study the painting’s perspective. It also recognized the exact colors used by the Dutch master and could even copy his brushstrokes (笔画).
The “missing” strips were printed and added to the painting. The left side included two men watching the event and a young boy running away from the army. A drummer and a barking dog were added to the painting’s right side.
“It is spectacular because what Rembrandt painted was Captain Franz ordering his soldiers to march out, and that is now exactly what you see,” said Taco Dibbits. “With the addition, especially on the left and the bottom, an empty space is created in the painting where they march towards. When the painting was cut, the soldiers were in the center, but Rembrandt intended them to be off-center marching towards that empty space, and that is the genius that Rembrandt understands: you create movement, a dynamic of the troops marching towards the left of the painting.”
【1】Why were some sides of The Nightwatch cut off?
A.To make it easy to be displayed.
B.To get it through the doorway.
C.To place it in the hall of the civil army.
D.To please captain Franz Banninck Cocq.
【2】How can AI help reconstruct the painting?
A.By changing the painting’s perspective.
B.By grasping the painter’s brushstrokes.
C.By identifying the colors of the painting.
D.By finding a copy of the original painting.
【3】What can we learn from Taco’s words?
A.The painting reflects an intention to move.
B.The original painting centers on the soldiers.
C.Franz Banninck Cocq is a genius of painting.
D.The empty left of the painting is useless.
【4】What is the best title for the text?
A.AI Draws a Masterwork in the Flesh
B.AI Brings a Painting Back to Life
C.AI Creates a Painting
D.AI Helps Restore a Painting to Its Original Form
24、The summer I was ten, my mother decided to bring us to the world of art. My brother and I were not very excited when we realized what my mother meant. What she meant was not that we could take drawing classes or painting classes but that we would have to spend one afternoon a week with her at the Fine Arts Museum. That was not so bad—what really troubled me was that before each visit to the museum, she made us read about artists and painting styles. 【1】 Anyway, who wants to spend the summer thinking about artists when you could be with your friends at the swimming pool?
First we had to read about ancient Egyptians and their strange way of painting faces and then go to look at them at the museum. 【2】 Later we had to learn about artists in the Middle Ages who painted people wearing strange long clothing. We had to look at pictures of fat babies with wings and curly hair and with no clothes on flying around the edges of paintings. 【3】
On our last visit to the museum, something happened when I saw a painting by a woman called Mary. 【4】 The colors were soft and gentle, and you could tell by the mother’s expression how happy she was just to be with the child. I could hardly take my eyes away from that painting! 【5】 It was really worth looking at so many paintings to find a painter who could interest me so much.
A.In it, a woman was reading to a child.
B.That felt almost as bad as being in school.
C.The two paintings were so similar to each other!
D.I wanted to see every painting Mary had ever made!
E.I was immediately attracted by the strange way of painting faces.
F.Staring at those pictures, I still couldn’t see what was so great about art.
G.Unusual styles of art always attracted my brother, but I was not interested.
