  • 21、   When it comes to making healthy lifestyle changes, which should come first-changing your diet or becoming more physically active?

Previous studies suggested that providing people with too much information about nutrition and physical activity at once tends(趋向)to be discouraging. That has led to the popularity of advising people to make changes gradually, and set smaller goals.

So the scientists divided 200 inactive participants who were 45 or older into four groups. One group was instructed in making diet and fitness changes at the same time; the second group was taught about diet changes first, and then fitness changes four months later; the third group changed their exercise habits first and made changes in their eating habits four months later; and the final, control group was not instructed in either diet or fitness changes but in how to manage their stress.

The researchers followed the groups for a full year. Compared to the control group, the three intervention(干预)groups made healthy changes in their diet. Those who changed their fitness habits first significantly increased the amount of exercise they received daily compared to the other groups after four months. However, at the end of the year, the group that changed both diet and exercise at the same time was the only one that met the nationally recommended targets for both exercise and nutrition levels, while those who worked on improving their nutrition first were unable to meet the recommended levels of fitness after a year. The researchers suspect that changes to diet are easier to make than changes to physical activity.

The findings show, however, that pairing diet and exercise changes may help to overcome some of the barriers people face in adding more physical activity into their lives. If folks change diet and exercise orderly, the scientists say, they may end up placing more importance on the first set of behavior changes and feel less pressured to address the second set.

    1How is Paragraph 3 developed?

A.By giving examples. B.By making comparisons.

C.By analyzing causes. D.By making classifications.

2Which group was the most physically active after four months?

A.The first group. B.The second group.

C.The third group. D.The control group.

3What might the scientists approve of?

A.Changing eating habits first may be reasonable.

B.Diet and exercise changes should be made orderly.

C.Diet and exercise changes are equally hard to make.

D.Diet and exercise should be processed at the same time.

4Which of the following is probably the title of the passage?

A.Changing your habits for better health

B.Ways to lead a healthy and balanced life

C.Making healthy lifestyle changes really counts

D.Timing matters in making diet and exercise changes

  • 22、   Not all the historians in Canada are historians of Canada. Case in point: Timothy Brook.

Brook was born and schooled in Toronto, and he now teaches in Vancouver. But he’s a historian of China, and his recent book Vermeer’s Hat seems at first to be about Holland in the period of the Dutch masters. When I met Brook recently in Vancouver, he did seem truly a global historian. Vancouver is his home, but Vermeer’s Hat has been published around the world.

Brook was just in from Oxford, UK, where he taught part of the year, by way of New York, where Vermeer’s Hat had just been given the Lynton History Prize. He was about to go to California, where he was due to lecture. Still, the author and the book---and the hat---say something fresh about Canada and the world.

“I’ve been looking at Vermeer since 1971,” says Brook. Looking at Dutch interior (室内的) scenes from the mid-1600s, he noticed maps, Chinese porcelains (瓷器), South American silver, Virginia tobacco—all marking the influences of the wide world. In Brook’s telling, Vermeer’s masterworks become doorways to the world, and not least to the largest, richest nation in the world, the China of the late Ming Empire, a field in which Brook happens to be a specialist.

Brook used global history as a way to find common ground with fellow historians. “The sixteenth century is the age of discovery, but the seventeenth century is the age of people starting to move the possibility of a global economy, intercultural relations across the globe,” he said.

It proved not hard for this Canadian historian of the world to find Canada in world history--or the world in Canadian history. In Vermeer’s 1658 painting of a Dutch soldier in a wonderful hat, the felt (毛毡) for the hat was probably made in Lachine, from French la Chine meaning China. Established in Canada by de Champlain, the town was so named because Champlain, like other explorers the French explorer Samuel was hoping to get through Canada to China.

1Which was the line of Brook’s recent journey back home   .

    A. Toronto--Oxford→ Vancouver

    B. Oxford→ New York→ Vancouver

    C. California→ Toronto→ Vancouver

    D. New York→ California→ Vancouver.

    2Which is discussed in Brook’s Vermeer’s Hat?

    A. The Lynton History Prize

    B. Ways to give good lectures

    C. The Ming Dynasty of China

    D. A hat Vermeer wore for years

3What can we infer about Vermeer?

    A. He was a Dutch painter

    B. He was a French explorer

    C. He was a UK publisher

    D. He was a US teacher

4What can be suitable title for the text?

    A. The Influences of masters’ books

    B. An age of moving and possibilities

    C. The Importance of Cultural Exchange

    D. A Canadian Historian Thinking Globally

  • 24、   Just as a hungry brain craves (渴望) food, a lonely brain craves people. A new brain study demonstrates this. After being left alone, it shows people's brains would be activated at the sight of other people. The action was in the same brain region that speeds up when a hungry person sees food.

Livia Tomova, a neuroscientist, who studies how the brain produces mental activities, and her colleagues began this study. They recruited (招募) 40 people. On one day, the participants had to fast—not eat anything at all—for 10 hours. On another day, the same people were placed in a room for 10 hours. They couldn't see anyone. No friends, no family and no social media. They weren't even allowed to check their email. After both days, Tomova and her colleagues put the people in a MRI machine. It shows activity in the brain by tracking how much blood is flowing to each region.

At the end of each day, the participants showed high activity in a brain area called the midbrain. The scientists were interested in two, small areas within it. Both areas produce dopamine, a chemical that is important in craving and rewards. The two areas activated when hungry participants saw pictures of tasty pizza or juicy hamburgers. After the volunteers had been isolated, those brain areas became active when they saw social activities they missed. It might be playing sports or chatting with friends.

The midbrain plays an important part in people's motivation to seek food or friends. In fact, it responds to food and social signals even when people aren't hungry or lonely. But hunger and loneliness increased the reactions and made people's responses specific to the thing they were missing. And the more hunger or isolation the volunteers said they were experiencing, the stronger the activity in this part of the brain. Tomova and her colleagues published their results November 23 in Nature Neuroscience.

【1】How does Tomova test out the result of the study?

    A.By stimulating desire.

    B.By controlling blood flow.

    C.By monitoring brain activity.

    D.By examining mental activities.

【2】What do we know about midbrain?

    A.It consists of two areas.

B.It helps motivate desire for food.

C.It stops working when people are full.

D.It decreases responses to lost friends.

【3】What does the underlined “it” in paragraph 3 refer to?

    A.A midbrain area.

    B.A social activity.

    C.A volunteer.

    D.A hamburger.

【4】What can be the best title for the text?

    A.Dopamine—a Sure Sign of Age

    B.Midbrain—a Nest for the Thoughts

    C.Hunger Makes Mental Health Struggle

D.Loneliness Makes Our Brains Need People
