二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Back in 2011, the then-16-year-old Boyan Slat was looking forward to a thrilling day of diving off the coast of Greece on a school trip. That excitement turned to despair when he discovered that the colorful ocean life he had been expecting had nearly been replaced by a sea of plastic trash. Throughout the rest of his trip, there was a question that wouldn’t stop running through his mind: Why can’t we just clean it all up?

Slat’s question became the basis of a high school research project in which he studied the critical danger plastic pollution poses to the oceans: how plastic makes it out to sea, and where it collects. He learned that plastic trash from rivers eventually finds its way into the oceans and gathers in one of five primary circulating currents, where a huge collection of trash already floats around.

After devising a method of removing ocean plastic involving the use of solar-powered platforms with attached booms and the ocean’s own currents, Slat presented his ideas in a TEDx talk that spread rapidly. Soon, investors were opening their wallets in support of his plan, leading him to found The Ocean Cleanup, of which he is currently the CEO.

Slat’s plan to clean up the oceans received a lot of media attention but also some criticism. How, for instance, could his team test these cleanup systems in real-world conditions without knowing the scale of the challenges they’d face? Wouldn’t it be more practical to cut off the flow of trash from the source instead of using potentially unreliable devices?

Slat isn’t afraid of failure though, and indeed, the initial versions of his system suffered some technical problems. However, in 2019, his system successfully returned its first loads of plastic waste to shore, and the most recent version collected nearly 20,000 pounds of trash. Some of this was recycled and sold as eco-friendly sunglasses, as Slat’s goal is for the system to be able to pay for itself. The source of the pollution isn’t being ignored either. Slat’s company has developed a smaller system, called the Interceptor, that can gather plastic from rivers. So far, Interceptors have been used in three countries.

According to Slat, these cleanup systems aren’t the only solution for the problem of sea plastic waste, for we must also rethink the way we deal with plastic globally. But in the meantime, a fix to the mess we’ve already made is needed.

【1】What did Slat’s ocean trip lead to in 2011?

    A.A tourist boom.

    B.A research project.

    C.A scientific award.

    D.A scientific breakthrough.

A.By speeding up the flow of ocean’s currents.

B.By breaking down the collection of plastic.

C.By attaching knives to the bottom of ships.

    D.By combining a platform with ocean’s currents.

【3】What is the Interceptor designed for?

A.Solving the problem where it starts.

    B.Collecting plastic from seas.

    C.Making plastic into sunglasses.

    D.Paying for Slat’s cleanup system.

【4】Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

    A.An unforgettable ocean trip

    C.An amazing scientific discovery

D.Cleaning the Oceans One Piece of Plastic at a Time

  • 22、   Next time you throw away rotten lettuce or smelly berries you should think about this. Globally, we waste more than a third of the food we produce. That is according to the Food and Agriculture Organization.

A group of Swedish graduate students is working to fight that fact. They are in the Food Innovation and Product Design program and have come up with a way to use produce that is about to go to waste. They turn the food into non-perishable (不易腐烂的) powder. It may help people who have limited access to food.

They are calling it FoPo Food Powder. It is exactly what it sounds like. It is dried, powdered, shelf-stable fruits and vegetables. The powder can be dropped into relief efforts after natural disasters. Or it can be given out in low-resource areas where fresh food and refrigeration are hard to come by.

Ngo, one of the students who developed it, says they are not making something ground breaking. Powdered food has been around since the early days of astronauts. But they are rethinking the waste and delivery channels. Their development team reached out to farmers and retailers to source fruit.

“Today a relief bag for humanitarian disasters contains various foods such as strawberry jam, peanut butter and peas in tomato sauce. We think that an easily transported pack of cheap dried food powder with high nutritional value would fit in perfectly,” Ngo says. The team has been trying to keep its prices down, too. That would aid low-budget humanitarian groups and non-governmental groups.

Freeze-dried food keeps most of the nutritional benefits of raw food. It loses some vitamins and minerals in the drying process. But it is still a good way to get fiber and nutrients.

The group are about to start working with the U.N.’s Initiative on Food Loss and Waste. They want to try and reach more people and countries that could benefit.

1Why did the group of Swedish graduates develop the FoPo Food Powder?

    A.To reduce food waste.

B.To cut the cost of food.

    C.To replace the traditional food.

D.To improve the flavor of the food.

2What does the underlined word “ground breaking” in Paragraph 4 mean?

    A.Additional. B.Reasonable.

    C.Creative. D.Worthwhile.

3What can we learn about powdered food?

A.It is very popular in some poor areas.

B.It is an effective way to lower food prices.

C.It keeps the nutritional benefits of raw food.

D.It provides aids for people in low-resource areas.

4What will the group do according to the last paragraph?

A.They are about to cooperate with the U.N.

B.They are about to write an Initiative for the U.N.

C.They will visit and help more people worldwide.

D.They will make great profits from their product.

  • 23、There has been a lot of publicity (宣传) recently surrounding 5G, the next generation of wireless technology for the world. But what is this technology and how might it change our lives?

    What is 5G?

5G stands for fifth generation, meaning the next step in the progression of technology to replace the current 4G system. 4G was the replacement for 3G, which came after 2G, and so on. These systems are wireless computer networks. Earlier “G” systems were designed to improve mobile communication operations. Each new technology brought major improvements in speed and greatly increased network capacity. The new 5G system promises more of the same. It is expected to permit more users to do more things-at a faster rate. Higher internet speeds and larger network capacity should result in better performance for device users connected to 5G. However, technology experts say there is a major way that 5G is different than the earlier systems. It will move well beyond mobile network technology to affect many more devices and industries than other “G” versions.

    When will it be available?

Before we can all use 5G, wireless companies and phone makers will have to complete and deploy (部署) a whole new system. New phones and communication equipment must be built. American wireless companies have been preparing for the new system for some time. They have been creating new network equipment and buying broadcasting space to carry 5G signals. They have built news G antennas(天线)to serve American cities and towns. Wireless providers will invest at least $275 billion n 5G-related networks in the United States, the industry group CTIA reported. The first U.S, launch of 5G is expected to happen sometime this year. Industry experts expect it will take a few more year to go nationwide. It will take even longer to reach rural areas. China is expected to launch 5G sometime in 2020, while European nations are likely to build their systems more slowly over time.

【1】Which system is widely used nowadays?

    A.5G.

    B.2G.

    C.3G

    D.4G.

【2】Which of the following is NOT 5G system’s advantage to the other Gs?

A.It will allow more users to do more things.

B.The internet speed will be much higher.

    A.USA→China→European nations.

    B.China→USA→European nations.

    C.USA→European nations→China.

    D.European nations→China→USA.

  • 24、   Indonesian university student Tyas Sisianindita spends about eight hours a day on her phone. That time includes watching videos, chatting with friends and using social media. "At night, when I can't sleep, I can use my phone for up to five hours," she said, noting she checks her phone countless times from morning until night. She even checks it while in class.

Tyas goes to the University of Indonesia, where a team of students recently developed a device meant to fight phone addiction. The students spent three months creating the device, which can help internet users like Tyas diminish time they spend looking at their phones.

Inventor Irfan Budi Satria led the development team. The device is called “Nettox", which combines the words “internet" and "detox (排毒)". Users wear it on their arm. The device has a sensor that measures hemoglobin (红蛋白) oxygen levels and changes to the heart rate called HRV. Studies have found that using a mobile phone for long hours can lower HRV levels. The Nettox device makes a sound when HRV and blood oxygen levels fall, which reminds wearers to stop using their phones.

For people between the ages of 18 and 25, the HRV should stay above 60. At a recent trial, Tyas' HRV reading was 44.

Internet addiction is a growing social issue in Indonesia. In October, two teenagers were treated for their addiction to internet gaming, media reported.

Irfan Budi Satria's team is working to improve Nettox's accuracy. HRV readings can change depending on whether the user is a man or woman, and what their body shape and health conditions are.

The team aims to get a patent for their invention with the university by next year. Irfan says Nettox is for people already trying to change their behavior. "Our goal is to help people who want to free themselves from internet addiction," he said.
