二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、The latest in cat research reveals that the lovely animal seems to have a basic grasp on both the laws of physics and the ins and outs of cause and effect.

According to a newly published study, cats seem to be able to predict the location of hiding prey (猎物) using both their ears and an inborn (天生的) understanding of how the physical world works.

In a recent experiment, Japanese researchers taped 30 domestic cats reacting to a container that a team member shook. Some containers rattled (发出响声); others did not. When the container was tipped over, sometimes an object fell out and sometimes it didn’t.

It turns out that the cats were remarkably smart about what would happen when a container was tipped over. When an object did not drop out of the bottom of a rattling container, they looked at it for a longer time than they did when the container behaved as expected.

“Cats use a causal-logical understanding of noise or sounds to predict the appearance of invisible objects,” lead researcher Saho Takagi says in a press release. The researchers conclude that cats’ hunting style may have developed based on their common-sense abilities to infer where prey is, using their hearing.

Scientists have explored this idea with other lovely creatures; babies. Like cats, babies appear to engage in what’s called “preferential looking” — looking longer at things that are interesting or unusual than things they perceive as normal.

When babies’ expectations are disturbed in experiments like the ones performed with the cats, they react much like their animal friends. Psychologists have shown that babies apparently expect their world to be consistent with the laws of physics and cause and effect as early as two months of age.

Does the study mean that cats will soon grasp the ins and outs of cause and effect? Maybe. Okay, so cats may not be the next physics faculty members at America’s most important research universities. But by demonstrating their common sense, they’ve shown that the divide between cats and humans may not be that great after all.

【1】What do we learn from a newly published study about cats?

A.They can be trained to understand the physical world.

B.They know what kind of prey might be easier to hunt.

C.They have a natural ability to locate animals they hunt.

D.They are capable of telling which way their prey flees.

【2】What may account for the cats’ response to the noise from the containers?

    A.Their inborn sensitivity to noise.

    B.Their unusual sense of direction.

    C.Their special ability to perceive.

D.Their mastery of cause and effect.

【3】In what way do babies behave like cats?

A.They focus on what appears odd.

B.They view the world as normal.

C.They do what they prefer to do.

    D.They are curious about everything.

【4】What can we conclude about cats from the passage?

A.They have higher intelligence than many other animals.

B.They interact with the physical world much like humans.

C.They display extraordinarily high intelligence in hunting.

D.They can aid physics professors in their research work.

  • 22、Last year scientists reported using a neural implant (神经植入物) in a man’s brain to restore his ability to communicate. The man has been partially paralyzed and unable to produce comprehensible speech since suffering a severe stroke. It is the latest advance in the exploding field of brain-computer interfaces (接口), or BCIs, which allow computers to read information out of a living brain.

Brain-computer interfaces are possible because of two facts. The first is that your brain contains hundreds of tiny maps. Each represents specific features of your physical feelings and intended actions. And crucially, the basic set of brain maps and their locations within the brain are very similar across individuals.

Thanks to their specialized functions and universal locations, brain maps are ideal entry points for BCI technologies. Picking up signals from a brain map is only the first step in making a useful BCI. Although the location of a brain map is the same across individuals, the details — what patterns of activity within the map mean — differ from person to person. In a sense, the unique features of your specific brain maps serve as a kind of encryption (加密), safeguarding your specific thoughts and feelings from would-be spies.

That brings us to the second fact that makes BCIs possible. Thanks to advances in machine learning, scientists have developed programs that can learn to recognize key patterns in a vast sea of numbers. They train these programs to decode (解码) brain signals by feeding them tons of examples. Researchers developing BCIs often create such examples by instructing an individual to think specific thoughts at specific times, creating a neural curriculum for the program to learn from.

While the universal features and locations of brain maps make them obvious entrances for BCIs, the unique features of your brain maps tend to protect them from spying eyes. In cases where BCIs have successfully read specific thoughts or intentions from a brain, it has been with the permission of the individual whose brain was being read. But there are surreptitious ways to train decoders on your brain without your knowledge. This can happen if your neural data falls into the hands of companies with detailed information about your activities.

Like all technologies, brain-computer interfaces are not necessarily good or bad. Yet while harvesting the benefits of BCIs, we need to ensure that we have the means to protect ourselves from corporations with every motive to take advantage of this technology for their financial gain.

【1】What can we learn about brain maps?

    A.They carry unique messages.

    B.They can process encrypted signals.

C.Their functions vary from person to person.

D.Their locations reveal human thinking patterns.

【2】What can we infer from the passage?

A.BCIs can boost brain signals dramatically.

B.BCIs could help recover from brain injuries.

C.Machine learning enables BCIs to read mind.

D.The decoding of brain may be affected by BCIs.

【3】What does the underlined word “surreptitious” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?

    A.Secure.

    B.Stable.

    C.Standard.

    D.Secret.

【4】What does the passage mainly talk about?

    A.The future trend of BCIs.

    B.The potential risks of BCIs.

    C.The working principle of BCIs.

    D.The general applications of BCIs.

  • 23、Once elected as Boston Councilor at age 28, Michelle Wu, who entered public service out of frustration with the obstacles that her immigrant family faced, now has become mayor of Boston, pledging to make the city a proving ground for progressive policy.

Encouraged by support from the city’s young, left-leaning (支持改革的左倾) voters and by Black, Asian and Latino residents, Ms. Wu, 36 years old, whose parents immigrated from Taiwan, China, completely and thoroughly defeated City Councilor Anissa Essaibi George.

Ms. Wu, who grew up outside Chicago and moved to the Boston area to attend Harvard, was an unusual candidate for this city, and her victory sets a number of precedents.

Ms. Wu is the first woman and the first person of color to be elected mayor in Boston, which has been led by an unbroken string of Irish American or Italian American men since the 1930s. Ms. Wu will also be the first mayor of Boston not born in the city since 1925.

State Representative Aaron Michlewitz, a longtime friend and supporter, described Ms. Wu's victory as the outcome of years of disciplined work on governing.

“It’s not always flashy; it's not always something that gets a headline,” he said. “She doesn’t impress others with this huge presence when she walks into a room necessarily. But over time she chips away at the issues you care about. You start realizing how dedicated she is to the job and to the work.

On November 16th, Michelle Wu was sworn in, launching her unique political career.

【1】Who isn’t likely to support Michella Wu?

    A.Young, left-leaning voters.

    B.Black, Asian and Latino residents.

    C.City Councilor Annissa Essaibi George.

    D.State Representative Aaron Michlewitz.

A.Ms. Wu from an Asian American family pledged to make Boston a progressive city in future.

B.Ms. Wu is not such a woman mayor born in Boston since 1925.

C.Ms. Wu was elected as mayor in Boston, ending the era of white male domination of Boston.

D.Ms. Wu is a disciplined and dedicated lady with huge presence.

【4】Why do you think Ms. Wu is elected mayor of Boston?

A.Because people wanted a change from Irish American or Italian American mayors.

B.Because she has received a distinguished education from Harvard University.

C.Because of her problem-solving capability and long term dedication to the public service in Boston.

D.Because she impressed people with her insightful remarks on many issues.

  • 24、Artificial intelligence (AI) has become a fashion word in recent years, and its impact on society is growing rapidly. AI refers to the development of computer systems that can perform tasks that would typically require human intelligence, such as learning, problem-solving, and decision-making. This technology is transforming every industry, from healthcare to finance, and is expected to revolutionize the future.

One area where AI is making significant strides is healthcare. AI-powered tools can analyze vast amounts of medical data and help doctors make more informed diagnoses and treatment decisions. This technology is particularly useful in fields such as radiology, where AI algorithms can analyze medical images to detect abnormalities that may be missed by human eyes.

In finance, AI is being used to analyze vast amounts of data to identify patterns and predict market trends. This technology can help traders make more informed decisions and reduce the risks of financial losses. Similarly, AI -powered chatbots are being used in customer service, helping to improve response times and provide personalized support.

As the use of AI grows, concerns about job displacement have also arisen. Some fear that AI-powered machines and robots will replace human workers, leading to mass unemployment. While this is a possibility, it is also important to note that AI will create new jobs in fields such as data analysis, software development, and robotics.

Another major concern about Al is the potential for bias and discrimination. AI algorithms are only as good as the data they are trained on, and if that data contains biases, the algorithms will also be biased. This issue is particularly concerning in fields such as criminal justice, where AI-powered systems are being used to make decisions about sentencing. If these algorithms are biased, they could make existing inequalities continue in the criminal justice system.

Despite these concerns, the benefits of AI are numerous and undeniable. However, to ensure that these benefits are accessible to all and to address concerns about bias and discrimination, it is crucial to continue researching and developing moral AI.

【1】Al outweighs humans in healthcare in that it .

    A.stops financial risks.

    B.ensures precise judgement.

    C.recognizes market tendency.

    D.offers personalized services.

【2】What is one of the major concerns of AI?

    A.New jobs will be unavailable.

B.Algorithms will be out of date.

C.Unfairness may arise in criminal justice system.

D.A large number of human workers will be laid off.

【3】How does the writer mainly develop this text?

A.By stating facts and citing quotes.

B.By showing different ideas and giving reasons.

C.By presenting influences and listing examples.

D.By comparing research results and offering suggestions.

【4】What can be a suitable title for the text?

A.Artificial Intelligence: Becoming a Fashion Word

    B.Artificial Intelligence: Revolutionizing the Future

    C.Artificial Intelligence: Bettering Decision Making

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

We three were running down the path, shouting and laughing when our dog Rubby suddenly stopped in the distance. He turned around, eyeing us, with his tail swinging up and down.

My little brother Toby immediately sped up and rushed to where Rubby was. He bent down and picked up something and ran back to us.

It was a bunch of keys. We gathered in a circle, examining the keys one by one, hoping to find some useful information about its owner. There were 3 keys, a house key, a mail key and a car key and a unique key fob(吊坠), very likely designed specially.

“Gosh, the owner might be in great trouble.” My sister sighed. She was right. We once lost our keys. Although we had an extra house key, it took our parents quite a long time to get a new mail key, let alone there was a car key.

    Who might have lost them?

After many wild guesses, we finally drew a conclusion: It might belong to someone in our neighborhood as only our neighbors wandered into the woods for a walk. But it was still impossible to figure out who it was. We had a very big neighborhood.

“The owner might come back to look for them.” Toby reminded.

So we decided to stay where we were, keeping a watchful eye on all passers-by. Our little dog ran in circles of excitement that we stayed so long in the wild. We remained in the woods for two hours, asking everyone we came across whether they lost their keys, but in vain.

It seemed we had to give up. But my sister wouldn’t, saying that she just couldn’t stop picturing the owner brushing aside tall grasses hoping to find the lost keys. “How anxious and upset the owner would be!”

I took a look at the bunch of keys again and quite by accident, found the key fob had the alarm button, “Look! If we press the alarm button, close enough of course, we can set off the owner’s car alarm...”

    “That’s brilliant.”

    注意:

    1. 续写词数应为150左右:
