  • 21、   Morgan’s Wonderland, located in San Antonio, Texas, is a theme park mainly intended for mentally or physically disabled children. The park was built by Gordon Hartman, a former real estate (房地产) developer. The creation of the park was inspired by his daughter, Morgan, who suffers from severe cognitive delay and physical challenges.

The world’s first ultra-accessible family fun park, Morgan’s Wonderland opened in the spring of 2010. Admission for guests with special needs is free, and fees for the general public are set at a much discounted price so that people of all ages and abilities can come together and play in a fun and safe environment.

Completely wheelchair-accessible, the park features 25 acres of attractions including rides, playgrounds, a catch-and-release fishing lake, and picnic areas throughout the park. The rides are custom-designed to accommodate wheelchair riders so that every family member can enjoy the fun. The adapted rides include the Off-Road Adventure, where guests can test their driving skills in sporty vehicles. Moreover, each visitor is offered the option to wear a GPS Adventure Band, which allows them to keep track of each other while in the park. The band also enables them to take part in electronic activities. For example, when the riders scan the band at the Off-Road Adventure, a photo will be taken and sent to their email.

In June 2017, Morgan’s Wonderland celebrated the opening of Morgan’s Inspiration Island. The new expansion is composed of five themed splash pads and a River Boat Adventure Ride. The wheelchair guests can be moved out of their chairs into unique, waterproof chairs and enjoy the splash park without risking damage to their personal wheelchairs.

  • 22、   Walter Osipoff was an experienced parachutist(伞兵).He had already made more than 20 jumps by May 15 , 1941. That morning, Osipoff trained his soldiers to practice jumps. Three boxes, containing weapons, were also to be parachuted overboard as part of the exercise.

Most of the soldiers had already jumped when Osipoff, standing a few inches from the plane's door, started to push out the last box. Somehow his parachute was suddenly opened. Instead of flowing free, Osipoff’s parachute now wrapped itself around the plane's tail wheel. He was now hanging below the tail of the plane. The soldiers struggled to pull Osipoff to safety, but they could not reach him. The plane was starting to run low on fuel, but an emergency landing with Osipoff dragging behind would certainly kill him. And pilots had no radio contact with the ground. To attract attention below, they eased the transport plane down to 300 feet and started circling the airport.

Meanwhile, Bill Lowrey and John McCants saw the trouble at the same time. As the plane circled once again, Lowrey yelled to McCants, “We must save him!” Lowrey's plane took off quickly. Within minutes, they made five approaches, but the air proved too bumpy(颠簸)to try for a rescue. Lowrey flew back once again and edged the plane closer. McCants, standing upright in the back, reached for Osipoff. He grabbed him at the waist and pulled Osipoff into the plane. Lowrey then nosed his plane inch by inch closer to the transport and used his propeller(螺旋桨)to cut the parachute lines. After hanging for 33 minutes between life and death, Osipoff was finally free.

Three weeks later, Lowrey and McCants were awarded for accomplishing “one of the most brilliant and daring rescues in history". Osipoff spent the next six months in hospital. The following January, he went back to parachute jumping.

1What happened to Walter Osipoff on May 15,1941 ?

A.He was trapped in a skydiving incident.

B.He threw weapon containers by mistake.

C.His soldiers refused to practice parachuting.

D.His parachute failed because of his carelessness.

2Why did the transport plane circle the airport?

A.To inform the ground crew to refuel for it.

B.To warn other planes to keep away from it.

C.To show the dangerous situation to the ground.

D.To tell the ground to receive weapon containers.

3How did Lowrey and McCants perform the rescue?

A.They pushed Osipoff back into the plane.

B.They boarded the transport plane to help.

C.They flew under Osipoff* s plane to free him.

D.They guided the transport plane to land safely.

4What did people think of Lowrey and McCants' behavior?

    A.Fearless. B.Subjective. C.Confidential. D.Tentative.

  • 23、   People dream of living long. In a survey on Longevity several years ago, 77 percent said they’d like to make it to 100. So we diet, count steps, pop supplements and hope for miracle treatments. Yet although diet and exercise are certainly vital for health, science shows there is another longevity secret we often overlook: finding purpose.

Research reveals that people who believe their existence has meaning have more favorable gene expression. If a 90-year-old with a clear purpose in life develops Alzheimer’s disease, that person will probably keep functioning relatively well despite some changes in the brain, one study found. Another analysis of 10 studies involving more than 136,000 people found that having purpose in life can lower your death risk by about 17 percent—about as much as following the famed Mediterranean diet.

Two years ago when researching my new book, “Growing Young: How Friendship, Optimism and Kindness Can Help You Live to 100,” I talked to scientists and centenarians in Japan about the reason behind their nation’s exceptional longevity—life expectancy at birth in that country stands at 84.2 years, almost six years longer than in the United States. While similar interviews I’ve conducted in the West tended to center on diet and exercise, in Japan the conversations quickly moved to ikigai, which is seen as having such measurable effects on longevity.

In one study conducted on over 43,000 Japanese, not having ikigai was linked to a 60 percent higher risk of dying of cardiovascular disease. That’s a lot. Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables per day can cut the danger of cardiovascular disease by “just” 27 percent. Elderly Japanese I interviewed talked about ikigai as “taking care of grandchildren,” “volunteering,” “keeping their street clean and pretty.” So Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare has included it in the official health promotion strategy.

The good news is that it’s possible to boost our sense of meaning and purpose through simple things, such as volunteering. If we keep such things going, if we find purpose and meaning in the current gloom, we may end up not just happier but healthier and longer-lived.

【1】Why does the author compare “finding purpose” with “the Mediterranean diet”?

A.They are new methods to get rid of Alzheimer.

B.They have similar effects on people’s longevity.

C.They both have a good fame in medical science.

D.They used to be overlooked as a vital treatment.

【2】How do the Japanese consider ikigai as a way to enjoy a longer life?

    A.Well recognized.

    B.Kind of impractical.

    C.A bit ridiculous.

    D.Seemingly illogical.

【3】What does the underlined word “it” in Para 4 refer to?

    A.Volunteering.

    B.The study in Japan.

    C.Ikigai.

    D.An interview.

【4】What does the author intend to do by writing the passage?

A.To investigate the true meaning of life.

B.To explain how to live purposefully.

C.To introduce the secret of longevity from a new perspective.

D.To warn us of some traps when seeking longevity.

  • 24、Though against his will, this 12-year-old boy felt compelled to leave his puppy to an animal shelter in Mexico. Upsetting, but sometimes the best decision is to let go of your dog for a better life.

The factors that compel owners to give up their pets vary, but the most common ones relate to issues regarding obedience and the owner's capacity. People have no alternative but to give up their dogs when they move into a new neighborhood and pets are not allowed. Another reason is when families cannot afford to cover medical bills for the pet. In the end, they have to give one up to ease their financial burdens.

Nevertheless, giving up our pets is one of the most difficult decisions we have to make, just like what this boy from Mexico did.

On February 13, a 12-year-old boy, Andres, left a pit bull puppy outside the Refugio

Xollin in Michoacan, Mexico. Along with the dog came a stuffed animal and a touching letter penned by his young owner, explaining why he could no longer care for the dog. “My name is Andres and I am 12 years old," the note reads, “My mom and I decide to leave my dog in your hands, hiding it from my dad because he is thinking about selling him." "He mistreats and kicks him. One day he kicked him so hard that he hurt his tail. I hope you can help and take care of him. I leave him a stuffed animal so he won't forget me.

The rescue group shared the story on their Facebook page, along with adorable pictures of the pup. The post quickly gained massive attention online. They have received over 300 applications to adopt the pit bull puppy, Rene, from all over Mexico.

The group took Rene to the pet clinic and had him dewormed. He is on his way to recovery and ready for adoption. However, it seems like Rescue Xollin hasn't found the perfect family for him yet, as he is still under their care. Hopefully, Rene gets adopted out soon and Andres is fine.

【1】What does the underlined word "compel" mean in the second paragraph?

    A.Determine.

    B.Permit.

    C.Force.

    D.Persuade.

【2】What led to Andres giving up Rene?

A.The fact that the new neighborhood doesn’t allow pets.

B.The reason that his family can’t afford the medical treatment.

C.The concern that his mother mistreats and kicks Rene.

D.The wish that Rene will experience a better life.

【3】What do we know about Rene?

A.He will be taken care of by the stuffed animal left by the boy.

B.He is well treated in the Refugio Xollin in Michoacan, Mexico.

C.More than 300 people would like to adopt him throughout the world.

D.Rescue Xollin hasn't found time to select a perfect family for him.

  • 26、请阅读下面短文,并按照要求用英语写一篇150词左右的文章。

Is youth lingo ruining the Chinese language?

Young people often create their own language that goes beyond rigid linguistic rules. This year’s latest slang (俚语) terms add a further simplification: the use of pinyin acronyms (首字母缩略词). “Awsl,” in pinyin, for instance, means “Ah, wo si le” (Oh, I’m gonna die), and is used if something is too cute or adorable to bear. “Pyq” stands for pengyou quan”, the social feed on the popular Chinese social media app WeChat, and “nsdd” stands for “ni shuo de dui” (you’re right).

Teens want to be different from their parents, so it’s natural for them to create and use their own linguistic terms to show that. In doing so, young people are indeed driving linguistic change. They aren’t the only factor influencing language development, but they can indeed transform how future generations communicate.

Critics fear that Chinese internet slang will have the potential to negatively influence broader linguistic trends of Mandarin Chinese, in particular, the gradual taking over of pinyin. As pinyin gets widely used when texting or writing on mobile phone or computer, while less and less people write characters by hand, people gradually forget how to write them. The phenomenon has got a name in China: Character amnesia(健忘症).
