二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Offline research has given rise to what’s called the “Social Brain Hypothesis”. This says that our brain’s ability to process multiple relationships creates a natural group size for humans of 100-200 people. This size is also constrained (限制) by the time required to maintain relationships — we only have so much time to devote to meeting or talking to people.

It has been suggested that social media might overcome the time constraints because posts and pictures allow us to talk to many more people at the same time even if the interaction is not direct. So psychologist Professor Robin Dunbar carried out two surveys of more than 3,300 people to see whether using the Internet really means we can have more friends.

What he found was that even among regular social media users, the average number of friends they had on Facebook was 155 in the first survey and 183 in the second, right in the bracket (范围) predicted by the “Social Brain Hypothesis”.

The first survey group, made up of regular social media users, considered only 28% of their Facebook friends to be “genuine” friends. When asked specifically how many people they would turn to for support in a crisis and how many they would turn to for sympathy, on average those groups were just 4 and 14 friends respectively, matching the offline findings of the “Social Brain Hypothesis”.

While a few people did have much larger groups of online “ friends ” on Facebook, they had similar sized support and sympathy groups to others. This suggests that when social media seem to allow someone to have more friends, it is because looser acquaintances are being included in the “friend” category, and partly because social media sites tend not to differentiate between close and more distant relationships — even though we clearly distinguish between friends and acquaintances in the offline world.

Professor Robin Dunbar explained, “social media certainly help to slow down the natural rate of decline in relationship quality that would set in once we cannot readily meet friends face to face. But no amount of social media will prevent a friend from eventually becoming just another acquaintance if you don’t meet face to face from time to time. There is something vital for face-to-face interaction that is crucial for maintaining friendships. Seeing the white of their eyes from time to time seems to be crucial to the way we maintain friendships.”

【1】Why did Professor Robin Dunbar carried out two surveys?

A.To discover if social media use can expand one’s social circle.

B.To prove social media offer a way to overcome the time constraints.

C.To explore how offline interactions allow one to have more friends.

D.To show if social media provides more communication opportunities.

【2】What do we know about the surveys’ findings?

A.They can not serve as evidence.

    B.They are well above expectations.

C.They have led to more offline research.

D.They confirm the “Social Brain Hypothesis”.

【3】Why did a few people have a much larger group of online “friends” ?

A.Because they got great support and sympathy from their online social circle.

B.Because they were better at turning acquaintances into friends.

C.Because they could distinguish their friends and acquaintances clearly online.

D.Because they viewed people in their acquaintance circle as friends.

【4】What did Professor Robin Dunbar reveal in the last paragraph?

A.Social media can not replace face-to-face contact.

B.Social media affect our face-to-face socialization skills.

C.Social media fail to improve the quality of our relationships.

D.Social media have negative effects on face-to-face interaction.

  • 23、   Art has always been a vital part of my life. When I was o ld enough to appreciate genuine fine art , my parents started bringing me to museums that housed works of the greatest artists in the world.

When my art teacher asked us to do a Cubist(立体派的)drawing, my first thought was that she was just joking. I didn't like Cubism.  I thought to do so means making fun ofthe true artists I admired. Unwillingly, I began to find out items for my drawing, I carelessly drew the objects all from different view points. The pictures all looked like a mess of lines and shapes anyway, but I was more concerned with how many more minutes were in the period because I was hungry. Yet, the other part of me was growing quieter. I began to take my task seriously and darken specific lines. I stared at my drawing and determined which ones needed to be emphasized. I was soon shading certain shapes black and they brought out important figures. It must be absolutely perfect.

When I showed her my finished drawing, my teacher looked at me with her huge smile and simply stated, "You are a Cubist. " At that moment the world stopped moving. My cubist drawing was the best piece of art I had ever created, not because I had spent the most time on it but because I had felt it.  I thought of how I produced it.  Once I felt frustrated, trying to perfect my black lines.  Another time I was delighted in breathing life into the drawing by adding color.  All of these emotions showed themselves in my work, giving it life that none of my previous works had had. Cubism set me free, showing everything I knew, everything I was, and everything I wished I could be. I had found the missing link, and the world began to move again.

  • 24、Ever been hungry enough to eat a house? Now, you actually could.

Food waste is a big problem in Japan and globally. Japan produced around 5.7 million tons of food waste in 2019. The government plans to reduce that by around 2.7 million tons by 2030. Tokyo University researchers Kota Machida and Yuya Sakai have developed a way to transform food waste into cement (水泥) for construction use and more. This is the first-ever process created for making cement entirely from food waste. The researchers say their product is four times as strong as traditional concrete. This particular cement can be used to make things like tea cups or chairs as well. However, there’s one additional feature — it’s also edible (可食的).

Kota and Yuya are the intelligence behind the formation of Fabula Inc., a company with purposes of reducing food waste, and helping fight global warming.

As expected, something this unique took years to develop. It took a few attempts to find just the right process. Kota and Yuya created the unique technology while researching possible environmentally-friendly materials to replace cement-based concrete. Cement production accounts for 8% of the world’s carbon dioxide emissions.

After a few failures, they realized they could get the cement to bind (黏合) by adjusting the temperatures. “The most challenging part was that each type of food waste requires different temperatures,” Yuya said. So the researchers had to observe them and respond in time. In the experiments, Kota and Yuya have successfully made cement using tea leaves, coffee grounds, cabbage, and even lunchbox leftovers.

Fabula Inc. is currently working to make tea cups and furniture, but Yuya is thinking a little bit bigger. Their product could provide relief in the form of edible emergency shelters in disaster zones. “For example, if food cannot be delivered to the people, they could eat makeshift beds made out of food cement,” he said. To eat the material, a person needs to break it apart and boil it.

【1】Which is one of Kota and Yuya’ purposes in making use of food waste?

A.To offer Fabula Inc. more cement.

    B.To produce building materials.

C.To warn how serious food waste is.

    D.To extend concrete’s service life.

【2】What did Kota and Yuya assess previously about making edible cement?

    A.Its damage to the environment.

B.Its cost of recycling the cement.

    C.Its difficulties they would face.

    D.Its popularity among the public.

【3】What made the experiment of making cement out of food waste harder?

A.Making sure to make cement tasty.

    B.Selecting correct food waste timely.

    C.Getting cement broken apart easily.

    D.Regulating the temperatures constantly.

【4】What does the underlined word “makeshift” in the last paragraph mean?

    B.Strong.

    C.Bendable.

    D.Commercial.
