21、Too much time spent on gaming, smartphones and watching television is linked to heightened levels and diagnoses (诊断) of anxiety or depression in children as young as age 2, according to a new study.
Even after only one hour of screen time daily, children and teens may begin to have less curiosity, lower self-control, less emotional stability and a greater inability to finish tasks, reports San Diego State University psychologist Jean Twenge and University of Ceorgia psychology professor W. Keith Campbell. They were particularly interested in associations between screen time and diagnoses of anxiety and depression in youth, which has not yet been studied in great detail.
Twenge and Campbell found adolescents who spend more than seven hours a day on screens were twice as likely as those spending one hour to have been diagnosed with anxiety or depression. Overall, links between screen time and well-being were larger among adolescents than among young children.
“At first, I was surprised that the associations were larger for adolescents,” Twenge said. “However, adolescents spend more time on their phones and on social media, and these activities are more strongly linked to low well-being than watching television and videos, which is most of younger children’s screen time.”
The study provides further evidence that the American Academy of Pediatrics’ (AAP) established screen time limits—one hour per day for those aged 2 to 5, with a focus on high-quality programs—are valid (有效的), Twenge said. The study also suggests that similar limits—perhaps to two hours a day-should be applied to school-aged children and adolescents, said Twenge.
In terms of prevention, establishing possible causes and outcomes of low psychological well- being is especially important for child and adolescent populations. “Half of mental health problems develop by adolescence,” Twenge and Campbell wrote in their paper.

23、 We are born to dance. Dancing changes the way we feel and think, and increases self-worth.
As a dance psychologist and teacher, I have witnessed the ways dancing has changed the lives of hundreds of people. Then I set up the Dance Psychology Lab so that I could combine my knowledge in psychology with dance, using science to study the relationship between movement and the brain. What I found was extraordinary: people with Parkinson's disease(帕金森病)and dementia(痴呆)getting a new chance to live longer;an increase in the self-worth of teenagers;reductions in sadness and anxiety in adults;increases in social bonding between people;and fundamental changes in the way people think and solve problems. All because of dancing.
Dancing stimulates the link between the body and the brain. The emotional high we get from dancing is due to dopamine(多巴胺).This brain chemical plays a role in how we feel, and low levels are associated with feelings of anxiety, hopelessness, pain and mood swings. Dancing is a great way to overcome these negative feelings because the exercise and our emotional responses to the music we're hearing can increase the release of dopamine in different parts of the brain. As dopamine levels go up, we can shake off some of those negative feelings and float into an excited state.
Scientists suggest that the best time to learn a dance routine is before you go to sleep. This is because the brain builds new knowledge structures while we sleep, and it is these structures that strengthen our ability to learn and remember information.
In our lab experiments, we found that people who did 20 minutes of improvised(即兴的)dancing became more creative when answering creative-thinking tasks. For example, before dancing, participants could generate about four or five alternative uses for a common object such as a brick or a newspaper, but after dancing they could generate seven or eight.
【1】Why does the author build the Dance Psychology Lab?
A.To change how people think and feel. B.To help people increase their self-worth.
C.To find out different social relationships. D.To study how dancing influences the brain.
【2】What change does dancing bring in people?
A.Dopamine levels go up. B.Their intelligence is raised.
C.Sleep quality is improved. D.Parkinson's disease and dementia are cured.
【3】When is the suggested time to learn dance moves?
A.In the morning. B.Before sleeping.
C.While working. D.In the evening.
【4】What do improvised dancing experiments show us?
A.Dancing helps with our creativity.
B.Dancing creates more activities.
C.Dancing attracts more participants.
D.Dancing inspires us to use more objects.
24、These days, many gyms require clients to wear masks or face coverings. The good news: research suggests they don't actually hold up your performance.
Researchers at the University of Saskatchewan gathered a group of 7 men and 7 women, ranging from slightly inactive to excellent cyclists and tested the effects of wearing a three-layer cloth face mask, a surgical mask, and no mask on their exercise performance.
The study participants started with a brief warm-up on a fixed bike, then took a progressive intensity exercise test, during which it was vital for them to keep the same pedal rate while the resistance was continually increased until exhaustion (疲惫不堪). Something like the heart rate was recorded every 30 seconds.
The results suggested that wearing a mask had no effect on performance or muscle oxygen levels. Since there was no difference in time to exhaustion between conditions, the highest power reached at the end of each test was similar in mask and no-mask conditions for all participants, Professor Chilibeck explained. Researchers also did not see any effects of the masks during exercise on blood oxygen levels, which wouldn't decrease if breathing was not affected.
And while droplet (飞沫) spread was not measured, all masks used were tested in a previous study in which they were shown to effectively minimize droplet spread, according to Chilibeck. Though the participants represented a wide range of fitness levels, it's important to note that these tests were conducted on a very small sample size, and more research is needed on larger populations to draw sweeping conclusions about the general population.
【1】How did the researchers draw the conclusion?
A.By conducting an experiment.
B.By making brief analysis.
C.By observing normal cyclists.
D.By doing medical tests.
【2】What will happen if masks block your performance?
A.Your heart rate may keep stable.
B.You might produce less droplet.
C.Your blood oxygen levels will drop.
D.You will feel more tired than before.
【3】What is the author's attitude to the study?
A.Doubtful.
B.Favorable.
C.Disapproving.
D.Objective.

B.Why Don't Masks Worsen Our Performance?
