21、 Toronto Wildlife Centre’s rescue team wants to match their expert skill with the latest technology to help more animals.
The rescue team wants to help animals fast and with an even higher success rate. They are looking at technology ranging from as simple as a quick-firing netgun to as complex as a remotely controlled trail camera that is connected to the cellular network. This would immediately inform them with a photo if an animal has been successfully trapped, or has returned to a site that they are monitoring.
A small thermal imager (热像仪) is another piece of equipment that the rescue team is looking at to add to their tool box. The technology would allow the rescuers to see an animal’s heat signature. This would be useful for finding animals hidden in brush, rescuing wildlife stuck inside buildings, or finding animals at night when it’s too dark to see. Say we know there’s an injured animal in a back yard with many hiding spots. We don’t want to storm there and scare him away. We want to be able to predict his movement and rescue him as effectively as possible and the only way we can do that is by knowing where he is, the rescue team leader, Andrew Wight said.
The team also has their eye on a camera-equipped drone (无人驾驶飞机). “We want to use drones for aerial (空中的) watching in situations like when we have a baby bird that came from a nest that is difficult to access. If there’s no other baby in the nest, we can build a new nest, and the parents will simply find their baby and relocate to the new nest. If there’s another baby in the nest, we can’t separate the family and will need to return the baby to the original one. If we have a camera-equipped drone, we will easily see if there are any other babies in the original nest and plan accordingly,” Andrew explained.
【1】What can we learn from paragraph 2?
A.The rescue team aims to simplify the technologies.
B.The remotely controlled trail camera is used to trap animals.
C.The remotely controlled trail camera must have internet access.
D.The rescuers will receive a photo only when an animal is trapped.
【2】How does a small thermal imager help rescue an animal?
A.By providing enough light at night.
B.By showing the location of the animal.
C.By giving off heat to warm the animal.
D.By offering a way to hide the rescuers.
【3】What would happen without a camera-equipped drone?
A.The bird nest would be destroyed.
B.The baby bird would be deserted.
C.The rescue work would be difficult.
D.Another nest would have to be built.
【4】Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Rescuing Animals with Technology
B.Toronto Wildlife Centre
C.Fast Developing Technology
D.Ways to Protect Wildlife
22、Millions of A$50 banknotes in Australia have an embarrassing typographical error that was overlooked by the country’s central bank before they were printed and circulated.
The goof first became known on Thursday when a listener on radio outlet Triple M sent the station a magnified photo of the Reserve Bank of Australia’s (RBA) new A$50 note highlighting the word “responsibility“ misspelt as ”responsibilty” three times.
The A$50 currency is the most widely circulated in Australia and accounts for nearly half the total value of other banknotes in use, according to the RBA. But for now, around 46 million of the new notes are in use across the country.
The note came into circulation on Oct. 18, 2018 with new security features designed to deter counterfeiting and with tactile (触觉的) elements for the visually impaired .
But it has no intention of withdrawing or recalling the notes from circulation. The error will be corrected in the next print run, the RBA said.
An RBA spokeswoman said in an emailed statement to Reuters the Bank “is aware of it and the spelling will be corrected at the next print run.”
“This does not affect the legal tender status of the banknotes. We have reviewed our processes to remove the likelihood of such an error occurring in the future,” an RBA spokeswoman said.
It sports a head-shot of Edith Cowan, who served as the first woman elected to an Australian legislature from 1921 to 1924.
“ It is a great responsibility to be the only woman here, and I want to emphasize the necessity which exists for other women being here,” it says.
The Bank said in its latest annual report its note printing subsidiary delivered 227 million Australian banknotes in 2017/18, including around 184 million new series A$50 banknotes.
【1】What’s the author’s purpose of writing the passage?
A.To introduce Australian Central Bank’s annual report on A$50.
B.To recall the newly-printed A$50 banknotes due to printing error.
C.To report a printing mistake of A$50 banknotes in Australia.
D.To warn Australian people of the typographical error in A$50 banknotes.
【2】What is the underlined word “goof” in the second paragraph?
A.fault
B.circulation
C.damage
D.reproduction
【3】Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?
A.A listener on radio Triple M called the station to tell the error of new A$50
B.The new A$50 notes account for most of the total value of other banknotes in use in Australia.
C.The RBA will withdraw new A$50 notes and they will not be in circulation.
D.The RBA is aware of the typographical error and it will correct the printing error in the next print run.
【4】What can we infer from the passage?
A.The correct spelling in the new A$50 note is “responsibility”.
B.The typographical error affects the legal status of the banknotes.
C.The new A$50 note with typographical error came into circulation on August,2018.
D.The new A$50 note has a head-shot of Mr. Cowan who was once an Australian legislature.
23、 Calling someone a “birdbrain” is considered rude. It implies that someone has a small brain and thus is not smart. A new study found that the expression doesn’t do birds justice either: Birds’ brains are much bigger than we thought — at least compared to their small bodies.
An international team of 37 scientists measured the brain volume (脑容量) of hundreds of dinosaurs and extinct birds by scanning fossils of their skulls. The readings were compared to a large database containing the brain sizes of modern birds. These measurements were then analyzed, taking into consideration each bird’s body size — resulting in something called “relative brain size”. The results showed that a dramatic change of birds’ body size happened right after the mass extinction of dinosaurs 66 million years ago.
According to the study, published on April 23 in the journal Current Biology, birds and dinosaurs had similar brain sizes before the extinction. After the extinction of the dinosaurs, however, birds had to find a way to survive, so they shrank their bodies — since smaller animals need less food — but they kept their big brains.
“The changed landscape may have caused the rapid evolution of new brainbody scaling patterns (缩放比例) by favoring both larger brains and smaller bodies,” US paleontologist (古生物学家) Daniel Ksepka, who is the lead author of the study, told CNN.
This “evolutionary brain leap” — as scientists call it — also happened very rapidly. Without dinosaurs, birds quickly repopulated. They came in all types and sizes, which contributed to the diverse species of birds we see today.
But among all the bird species, certain ones “show above average rates of brain and body size evolution”, study co-author Adam Smith at Clemson University, US, said in a statement — with crows and parrots being the most evident. In fact, previous studies have already discovered that these birds have an amazing cognitive capacity (认知能力). They are able to use tools, imitate human speech and even remember human faces.
So, in the words of Smith, “calling someone ‘birdbrained’ is actually quite a compliment (恭维)”!
【1】How did the scientists learn the brain sizes of dinosaurs and extinct birds?
A.By studying their fossil skulls.
B.By searching the database.
C.By experimenting on their brains.
D.By analyzing their body size.
【2】How did the birds change after the extinction of the dinosaurs?
A.The birds’ bodies shrank as their brains became smaller.
B.The birds’ bodies became larger while their brains became smaller.
C.The birds’ brains remained almost the same as their bodies shrank.
D.The birds’ brains became larger to adapt to the environment.
【3】According to Adam Smith, calling someone “birdbrained” is ________.
A.to make rude remarks
B.to laugh at one’s small body size
C.to praise one’s intelligence
D.to suggest the person is not smart

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was raining pretty hard on Halloween, but that wasn’t going to stop my little sister Kate and me from trick-or-treating. We decided to start at Miss Parson's house. Miss Parson was loved by us kids who lived nearby because she often shared her self-made cookies with us. We usually finished them in a second, especially when we were hungry after class. Sometimes, when we visited her or did something for her, she always gave us surprise.
Kate and I wondered what kinds of treats she'd offer. As we walked down the street, I held an umbrella, a bag for candy, and my sister's hand. Jack-o-Lantems gave soft light along the street. Spider webs hung in all the windows. Parents who were dressed up like monsters (怪物) stood in doorways. After we had walked a few blocks, we were wet from head to toes, and I felt Kate was trembling with cold.
There was a light on at Miss Parson's house, but there were no ghosts,小妖精), or Jack-o-Lantems. We climbed up the steps and saw Miss Parson through a window. She was drinking a cup of hot tea.
"Maybe she doesn't celebrate Halloween," Kate said with a sigh, disappointedly.
"Well, even if she doesn't, she usually likes it when we visit her," I said and knocked on the door.
Miss Parson seemed surprised when she opened it and saw our dressing. " Is today Halloween?" she asked. "I completely forgot. I am so sorry!"
