21、My wife Julie and I were out on the road that runs around our neighbourhood. Two dog walkers passed by and one of them said, “Never seen that dog around here before.”
We looked down the hill and saw an old black dog stumbling (蹒跚) painfully up the hill. We bent down, talked gently to the dog and patted it. I checked and there was a collar. There was a phone number on it, but no one answered.
The dog was really thin. It didn’t have many teeth left.
Julie ran home to get some of our dog’s food while I tried to encourage the dog to come along with me. Julie got home and back again when I was only half way there. So, we sat down on the sidewalk while our new friend ate its food.
Finally we got it home. We gave it a blanket, more food and wondered what to do next.
After trying for many times, we got a reply from the number. A lady came. She explained that Tara had been her father’s dog. It was very old and should probably be put to sleep, but the lady just couldn’t bring herself to do it. So, Tara was safely returned home.
Here is the truth of the story:
In fact, Julie and I were out that morning because I was leaving. She was trying to persuade me to come back, but I still didn’t find it possible. I was going to turn and go when an old, weak dog walked between us and collapsed. Suddenly we had something more important than our problem to worry about. There was a creature in need right before us and we had to work together to help it.
We did help it. And here am I writing the story in my own home. In the song “Love Is Not a Fight”, Warren Barfield talks about marriage. He sings, “And if we try to leave, may God send angels to guard the door.”
Sometimes angels come disguised (伪装) as dogs.

22、 Classic books never go out of fashion. The book The Outsiders first came out in 1967. Although the book is old, it is still worth reading. It is written by US writer S.E.Hinton.
The book tells the story of a 14-year-old boy called Ponyboy Curtis. He struggles with difficult issues of right and wrong in a society where he is an outsider. The story took place in Oklahoma, US, in 1965.
In the book, the children are divided into two groups. One includes Curtis and Greasers. It is mostly made up of poor kids. They have longer hair and often smoke at a young age. The other group is called the Socs, which is made up of rich children. They wear expensive clothes and drive high-tech cars. Those two groups do not get along well. The book only shows us two weeks of the boys' life.
I was touched by the friendship among the boys. When any of them has a problem, the others will help. Although they are not well educated(教育), they are kind and brave. For example, when Johnny was hurt and in hospital, his friends visited him almost every day. They brought him food and told him interesting stories. I always dream of having a strong friendship like this.
This book shows the good personalities(品质) in those ordinary people. I advise that teenagers read this book and I hope they can enjoy it.

23、 For most people, the word “fashion” means “clothes”. So people may ask the question, “What clothes are in fashion?” And they use the adjective(形容词) “fashionable” in the same way, “She was wearing a fashionable color.” But of course there are fashions in many things, not only in clothes. There are fashions in holidays, in restaurants, in films and in books. There are even fashions in school subjects, jobs and languages.
Fashions change as time goes. If you look at pictures of people or things from the past, you will see that fashions have always changed. An Englishman in 1750 looked different from his grandson in 1860. Today fashions change very quickly. Some of these are natural. We hear about things much more quickly than ones in the past. Newspapers, radios, telephones, televisions, and computers send information from one country to another in a few hours. 24、Do you know how to be a healthy kid? Here are some rules you should follow.
First, eat different food, especially fruit and vegetables. You may have a favorite food, but you'd better eat something different. If you eat different food, you will probably get more nutrients(营养物质)your body needs.
Second, drink water and milk as often as possible. When you're really thirsty, cold water is the No. 1 choice. Milk is a great drink that can give you more calcium(钙)your body needs to grow strong bones.
Third, listen to your body. How do you feel when you are full? When you're eating, notice how your body feels and when your stomach feels comfortably full. Eating too much will not make you feel comfortable and make you feel fat.
Fourth, limit screen time. Screen time is the time you watch TV, DVDs and videos, or using computers. It is good to take more exercise such as basketball, bike riding and swimming. You can't watch TV for more than two hours a day.
