24、 Fat and shy, Ben Saunders was the last kid in his class picked for any sports team. “Football, tennis, cricket — anything with a round ball, I was useless,” he says now with a laugh. But back then he was the one always made fun of in school gym classes in Devonshire, England.
It was a mountain bike he received for his 15thbirthday that changed him. At first he went biking alone in a nearby forest. Then he began to ride the bike along with a runner friend. Gradually, Saunders set up his mind on building up his body, increasing his speed and strength. At the age of 18, he ran his first marathon.
The following year he met John Ridgway and started to work as a teacher at Ridgway’s school of adventure(冒险)in Scotland, where he learnt about Ridgway’s cold—waterexploits. Greatly interested, Saunders read all he could about North Pole explorers and adventures; he decided that this would be his future.
In 2001, after becoming a skillful skier, Saunders started his first long—distance expedition (探险) towards the North Pole. It took unbelievable energy. He suffered frostbite, ran into a polar bear and pushed his body to the limit, pulling his sled up and over the rocky mountains.
Saunders has become the youngest person to ski alone to the North Pole, and he’s skied more of the North Pole by himself than any other British man. His old playmates would not believe the change.

25、
I noticed a dad and his son at the park. His son wasn’t able to communicate, but he seemed content sitting in the sand. The dad explained to me that his son could only make some sounds. The boy had been in speech therapy(言语治疗)for years. After so much time in therapy, the boy was able to maintain eye contact for a few seconds and the father was delighted by the achievement! He told me how expensive the therapies for his son’s specific needs were and what a pleasure it was to see all of the years of hard work paid off. The father and son connected, and those few seconds of eye contact meant the world to that dad!
As we talked about therapy, the dad shared with me that his goal for his boy was to someday be able to go for ice cream together. He said his father used to take him out for ice cream and he hoped he could do the same with his child. Suddenly, the son stopped putting his fingers in the sand, looked at his father and said, “Hi.” Seconds later the boy went back into his own world. The dad wanted to say something, but he couldn’t. His love for this boy was so great that the words would not come. But what did come were tears. Those tears conveyed(传达)how proud he was of his son. A father loves his child more than words will ever be able to express.
Although they were strangers to me, I am honored to have shared this precious celebration of accomplishment in that boy’s young life. I hope someday they will be able to go for ice cream and have a beautiful father and son outing.
This event touched me deeply and made me consider my relationship with my own father. I hope that as they communicate further, more and more memories will be created for them to share. I am convinced the feelings held by all awesome fathers —their hard work, their love, their pride, and their tears of love—are all the same.

27、When you brush your teeth, you might squeeze (挤压) out too much toothpaste (牙膏). Can you put the toothpaste back in the tube again? Here is a story which can make you think more about it.
It was a night in July at an all-girls summer camp. The students sat around a fire and chatted a bit. Their teacher asked if any of them wanted to share something. It could be anything that happened that day and what they learned from it. One girl put up her hand. She said that another girl said something bad to her and that it hurt her feelings. She felt quite sad about it.
The teacher said nothing but went to the bathroom and got a tube (软管) of toothpaste. She held the tube high in the air so that every student could see it. Then she squeezed it just a bit so some toothpaste could come out. After that, she tried to put the toothpaste back in the tube, but it just made a mess. She squeezed the tube even more, pushing out more toothpaste and making even more of a mess. But none of it could go back into the tube.
