  • 24、   Five interesting sports

Our most unusual sports from around the world

Every country has a national sport and some popular sports are now played across the world. However, in most countries, people also play unusual sports, with strange or interesting rules.

Here are our top five unusual sports from around the planet.

    Man vs. Horse Marathon

This race takes place in a small town in Wales, about 200 miles from London. It's called a marathon(马拉松), but it’s actually 35.4 km, not 42.2 km like a usual marathon. People race against horses across the hills and mountains. It started in 1981, but a human did not win until 2004.

    Camel Wrestling

In Turkey, camel wrestling is a very old sport. The largest camel wrestling competition takes place every year and thousands of people come. In the sport, two camels fight against each other.

Sometimes the camels do not want to fight and they run through the crowds, which can be dangerous.

    Dragon Boat Racing

Every year in China, thousands of people watch dragon boat races. A dragon boat is a traditional Chinese boat with a painted dragon's head on one end. There can be up to 36 people or more racing in each boat in the water. Dragon boat racing is also popular in some other Asian countries.

    Caber Toss

In this sport, players compete to throw a large piece of wood called a caber as far as they can. There is no rule about the size of the caber, but it’s usually the size of a small tree. It's an ancient Scottish sport. Visitors to the UK can check it out.

    Chess Boxing

A good chess boxer needs to be both strong and smart. Players play a round of chess, followed by a round of boxing. There are eleven rounds in total. Chess boring was invented in 1992 by an English comic book writer. The sport is more popular in England and Germany.

【1】What can we learn about Man vs. Horse Marathon?

    A.It is an outdoor sport.

B.It first appeared 16 years ago.

C.No human has ever won the game.

D.It follows the rules of a usual marathon.

【2】Which picture best describes Caber Toss?

    A.

    B.

    C.

    D.

【3】How many sports have animals as players?

    A.1

    B.2.

    C.3.

    D.4.

  • 25、Some animals can easily find their way home after a long journey. How do they make it? Scientific research shows that they are born with certain unusual abilities for direction.

A certain kind of ants, for example, can count their steps to avoid getting lost. They can go as far as 110 meters and bring food home. These ants live in the open desert, so they have nothing to guide them along the way. It’s like someone walking six kilometers through a dark forest.

Some fish have an unbelievable sense of smell. They can smell even a drop of their home water in a large sea area. Some sea birds have a similar ability. They are able to make a smell map of their flying area.

Some animals can sense the earth’s magnetic field (磁场), while humans can’t. This magnetic field guides a certain kind of fish when they swim a long way to a place and then back. How can this kind of fish do that? It is still a mystery. Scientists have no good answers yet.

However, animals with such unusual abilities still have difficulty dealing with environmental changes caused by human activities. For example, many birds depend on stars for direction, but they get lost easily at night when city lights are kept on all night. To solve this problem, we can simply turn off some lights at night. Clearly, one small act of humans may mean a lot to animals.

【1】How can a certain kind of ants find their way?

    A.By marking the way.

    B.By counting their steps.

    C.By bringing food together.

    D.By walking through a forest.

【2】What are people advised to do according to the last paragraph?

    A.To help animals.

    B.To travel at night.

    C.To keep city lights on.

    D.To develop unusual abilities.

【3】Who might be interested in this passage?

    A.Students that love reading stories.

    B.Students that love art.

    C.Students that love travelling.

    D.Students that love science.

【4】Which can be the best title of this passage?

    A.Birds’ Sense of Light.

    B.Fish’s Sense of Smell.

    C.Animals’ Sense of Direction.

    D.Animals’ Sense of Magnetic Field.

  • 26、“Made in China” is having its moment now--and it’s a fashionable one.

The story of Chinese fashion began in 2011 when Feiyue and Huili, both Chinese sports shoe brands(品牌), suddenly got international attention. Their products were seen all over the world. Chinese sportswear brand Li Ning was at the New York Fashion Week in September, 2018. They showed their new designs—sweaters and jackets with Chinese characters.

Shaun Rein, managing director of China Market Research Group, said that the latest Chinese brands no longer catch customers’ eye by low price. He told CNN, “They are sure that they can go head to head with foreign brands. ”

Maybe it is because China’s young people are now more confident about their own culture. They don’t show immediate interest in western culture any more.

“Today’s young people in China are crazy about Chinese cultural elements(元素), ”. Jin Qu, the manager of a clothing shopping website, said at a cultural festival in 2018. “They like these elements printed on their clothes, even the brand picture of Laoganma in China, which was once seen as outside of fashion. But now young people are proud of these Chinese symbols. ”

In fact, many stars in the West are now interested in Chinese cultural elements in fashion. Rihanna, a US singer, for example, wore a Chinese red dress to the 2015 Met Gala in New York. The dress was designed and made by Chinese designer Guo Pei.

“We have to move from making to creating, ” Chinese-American designer Aric Chen once told The New York Times. “We want to replace the words ‘Made in China’ with ‘Designed in China’. ”

【1】The new designs of Li Ning Company in September, 2018 were ________.

A.sweaters and sports shoes in Chinese red

B.sweaters and jackets with English words

C.coats and jackets with American symbols

D.sweaters and jackets with Chinese characters

【2】The underlined word “They” in Paragraph 5 refers to ________.

    A.today’s young people in China

B.the workers in Jin Qu’s clothing shop

    C.many stars in the West

    D.managers of some Chinese companies

【3】The passage above may be taken from a(n) ________.

    A.newspaper

    B.guidebook

    C.novel

    D.ad

  • 27、Next time you hear yourself wishing for something better in your life, remember the word “SMART”. When you’ve decided to take action, read the following first.

S is for specific (具体的): For example, instead of setting a goal (目标): of “I want to lose weight”, set yourself a specific goal like “I want to lose five kilograms”. If you want to climb a high mountain, start your research, set a date and train for the climbing fitness.

M is for measurable (可测量的): Don’t try to “become healthy”, instead, set a goal that can be measured while carrying out an improved eating, exercise or lifestyle plan. For example, try to go to the gym for an hour three times a week, to visit your grandma once a week for an evening meal, or to eat no more than 200 grams of chocolate a week.

A is for achievable(可完成的): If you’ve never exercised in your life, don’t try to take part in the 2020 Olympics. Rather, get walking with a specific goal of how many steps to take a day. No need to try for the stars—baby steps are good.

R is for relevant (恰当的): Many of us choose goals that seem right, but are in fact wrong. They may go on for a few weeks before they fail. Try to avoid making the same mistake—rather choose goals that really speak to you.

T is for time-conscious (心中有数的): Finally, be very clear in your mind about how much time you are giving yourself to achieve the goal. That way, you know when you’ve succeeded, failed or whether you need to work harder to finish it before the last day.

    C. In order to make the goal fit for you, you should be careful.

    D. More time should be given for you to achieve your goal.
