A young woman turns around and around quickly, and jumps high. In the background, a young girl reads a rejection (拒绝) letter from a ballet school. “You have the wrong body for ballet,” it says, “and at thirteen, you are too old.” This was one of the most popular advertisements of 2014 and it describes American Ballet Theater's principal (主要的) dancer Misty Copeland.

This was not a real letter. But Copeland says it is very similar to letters from her childhood. While many dancers start at the age of three, Copeland only began to study ballet in 1995 as a thirteen-year-old girl. People often told her that she was too old, or that she didn't have the perfect body type (She is only 157 cm tall). Her family moved a lot, and it was sometimes difficult for her to attend ballet classes. But Copeland loved dancing and did not want to give up. She stayed with her ballet teacher during the week and spent time with her family only at the weekend. This was a difficult life, but she worked hard and won her first national competition when she was fourteen years old. Copeland joined the American Ballet Theatre in 2000 and performed in many ballets over the next few years. In 2007, she became a solo (单独的) performer, and in 2015 she became its principal dancer.

Copeland is now a dancer, author and Broadway performer. She also stars in the 2015 film A Ballerina's Tale. So what's next? According to Copeland, anything is possible: “My career (职业) really is just now beginning.”

1How old was Copeland when she became the principal dancer?

    A.13. B.14. C.25. D.33.

2Why was it difficult for Copeland to attend ballet classes?

A.Because her family moved a lot.

B.Because she was not a good dancer.

C.Because she had no invitation letter.

D.Because she had the wrong body type.

3Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A.Copeland became successful because of the advertisement.

B.Copeland had to spend a lot of time away from her parents.

C.Copeland won her first national competition as a solo performer.

D.Copeland has ended up her career as an actress on Broadway.

4What's the writer's opinion of Copeland?

A.Copeland sets an example who never gives up.

B.Copeland was too old to start ballet at thirteen.

C.Copeland has made her achievements by accident.

D.Copeland was lucky to get support from the ballet school.

  • 27、   Many kids all over the world are reading Harry Potter books in school. But some parents think their children shouldn't be able to find those and other books in school libraries. Should school libraries keep books that some parents don't approve ofShould they take those books off the bookcases?

All over the USA, schools are wrestling with those questions. Read these arguments. Then decide for yourself.

Yes! Some Books Should Be Banned from School Libraries!

Many parents believe that there should be certain limits(限定). Books that include violence(暴力)or bad words shouldn't be in schools. Some parents think Harry Potter books have no place in school libraries because they talk about wizards and magic.

Most parents know what's good for kids. They have a right to decide which books should or should not be in school libraries.

Books should be checked before they are put in schools. Is this a good book for kids to read?

Is it full of violence? Does it have bad words or ideas kids shouldn't learn about? If a book is not good for all kids, it should not be in a school library.

No! Books Should Not Be Banned from School Libraries!

Why should a few parents stop all kids from reading stories like Harry Potter?

"Parents should decide what their own kids read," said Natalie Nicole, of Denver, Colorado.

Many experts say that it's the parents' job, not the school's job, to check out what their kids are reading. If they don't like a book, they should not let their kids read it.

Many schools let kids borrow certain books if they have a signed(签名的)paper from their parents. That works fine. A parent doesn't sign the paper if he or she doesn't want the child to read the book. Other kids can read the book if they are allowed.

Some books are not OK for all kids to read. But if more adults were careful about what their own kids read, they wouldn't have to ban books from the library.

1The underlined word "approve of " has the closest meaning to "______________".

    A.borrow B.accept C.read D.write

2Some parents don't think Harry Potter books should be in school libraries because

A.they talk about wizards and magic B.this kind of books will bring bad luck

C.kids don't have a signed paper for the books D.they have nothing to do with children's studies

3The underlined word "That" refers to

A.Reading books with kids B.Allowing kids to read widely

C.Signing before borrowing books D.Letting kids choose books themselves

4Which of the following would Natalie Nicole most probably agree?

A.Schools should provide a reading list for the students.

B.All the kids should be allowed to read Harry Potter books.

C.Libraries should ban the books some parents don't support.

D.Kids' choices of books should be made by their own parents.
