24、Once, there was a young man who looked down on the old. He always thought the old lived a useless life. He also did this to his father. He often ignored (忽视) his father’s efforts to him and the family.
One day, the father and the son happened to meet each other in the field. The son suggested that they should take a walk together. As they walked, a beautiful garden came into their sight. The son pointed to one of the prettiest flowers and said, “We young people are like this flower, so healthy, so fragrant (芬芳), and full of spirit.” He continued, “What about you? Just like the falling leaves from a dying tree.”
Hearing this, the father smiled, but said nothing. They continued walking in silence. When they passed a store, the father stopped and went in. He bought a walnut (核桃) and showed it to his son. The father said, “We old are like this walnut. We’ve experienced many hard events in life. So we built up such a hard shell (壳), and at the same time we also built up a nice fruit, so full-grown.”
“But every fruit was born by flower,” said the son. “Yes, but not every flower can produce fruit…”
Indeed in our family, our parents are not useless lives or falling leaves, but the experienced (饱满的) walnuts. They protect us all the time and all the way, just like old hard walnuts. They are the ones we should thank forever. And we should try to be a flower that can produce good fruit.

25、Yawning (打哈欠) is something we all do— maybe because we’re bored carrying out boring tasks or because we’re tired. Sometimes, just seeing other people yawn can set you off.
Many of us think we open our mouths when we yawn to take in more air, but in fact there is no clear connection. A new research suggests it might be because yawning lower the temperature of the brain and prevents it from overheating, much like the fan in your computer. This might be why we’re more likely to feel sleepy and yawn in warm temperatures.
We yawn more when we’re tired and ready for a sleep, and we can’t control when we do it! But it’s also true that yawning is a very contagious behaviour. John Drury, a researcher from Sussex University, told the BBC that “it’s something that you can’t stop. Dogs yawn when their owners yawn, and animals yawn to each other. It happens whether you want to or not.”
His research into this behaviour showed that there is a connection with our social group and how close we are to the people in it. If we are closely connected with the person who has the behaviour, we are likely to copy it too.
Another research by the University of Nottingham found similar results. Researchers found people hardly avoided yawning when others around them yawned. They also found, when using electrical stimulation(刺激), that they were able to increase people’s wish to yawn. These findings could be useful because they could help treat other conditions like Tourette’s(图雷特氏综合症).

26、Dr. Reyes Guana is the superintendent (负责人) of Byron Union School District in Northern California, USA. He has a big title now, but Guana never forgets his beginnings.
Guana was born in a poor Mexican family with eight children. His parents always had two jobs to make ends meet. As a boy, Guana was very quiet in school. He had a good relationship with the school cleaner. He called her “Nike” because she wore Nike shoes. The boy liked how Nike made everything clean. He told her he liked her job. “Whatever you want to do, make sure you go to college,” Nike said.
Guana also looked up to the school headmaster, who was tall and friendly. The school headmaster said that his job was to help the students and teachers. “When I grow up, I want to do what you’re doing,” Guana said. “Well, if you stick to your dream, you’ll get there,” the headmaster replied.
And Guana did get there. But it was really a long journey. At first, he followed in Nike’s footsteps and was cleaning schools. He worked at three schools in order to make enough money to pay for his college education. He held that job for four years and then worked his way up to being a school safety monitor (监督员). “The day before yesterday,” says Josh Peters, 16, “was probably the best day of my life.” On that day, Josh found out that the nation basketball team wanted him to play in the Paralympics (残奥会)!
Amazingly, two years ago, Josh didn’t use to like any sport. “I was so lazy,” says Josh. “The only exercise I did outside school was going to the shops to buy video games!”
On the day before his fourteenth birthday, Josh was crossing the road when a motorbike hit him. The motorcyclist was riding so fast that he didn’t see the red light-or Josh. Josh never walked again.
At first, Josh thought his life was over. “I didn’t hang out with friends. I didn’t answer the calls or emails. I just wanted to be alone.” Then one day he saw a You Tube video about wheelchair basketball. “It looked so exciting,” said Josh, “I wasn’t watching ‘people in wheelchairs’.
