四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、During the years people change a lot. Five years is enough to compare yourself now and then. I think that I have changed a lot in the past five years.

Firstly, there are changes in my thoughts. Five years ago my thoughts were the same as a child’s. I believed that the world was a place without problems. I thought that I could always have time for games and friends wouldn’t change. Also I was sure that if I had any problems, my parents could always be around me offering help. Now I still believe that the world is a great place to live in, but sometimes there are different problems you have to face. And at times you have to deal with these problems alone without any help. And that is one of the changes that have happened to me in the past five years. Now I’m much more responsible (负责任的) and serious than five years ago.

Secondly, there are some changes in my interests. Now I spend less time with friends and I spend most of my time studying for exams. Five years ago, it wasn’t so. I believed that there was nothing more important than playing football or watching cartoon movies during those days.

Although I have changed in some ways, there are some similar ways between now and then. For example, I still like spending time with friends. And I am still sure that childhood is the best time in our life.

People can reduce, reuse, or recycle waste instead of throwing it away. Matt and Sam decided to do an experiment. They wanted to see exactly how much waste the three R’s could save.

First, they collected the rubbish from six classrooms at their school. They divided the rubbish into three groups:

Things that were reusable, such as a pencil or a marker that had been thrown away

Things that could be recycled, such as cans, glass, or paper

    Things that were truly waste

Then, Matt and Sam weighed each of the three groups. They learned that 84%of the total rubbish thrown away that day could be recycled or reused. They decided to do something about it.

Matt and Sam presented the idea of starting a recycling programme to the school leaders. Then they worked with the Student Council. They prepared brochures (手册) to send home to tell the students and their families about recycling. They stated in the brochure that recycling helps to keep our planet healthy. The school bought colored containers (容器) for each classroom. Each room received a blue container for paper and a green container for glass and cans. They also received a red container for real rubbish.

Within a short time, each classroom in the school was sorting recyclable materials from rubbish before it was thrown. Matt and Sam decided to weigh the rubbish one more time. They wanted to check the school’s progress. They collected the rubbish from the red containers from the same six classrooms as before. They sorted the rubbish into three groups again and weighed each group. This time, they were pleased to find that the red containers were filled with 90% waste that should be thrown away. Only 10% of recyclable materials had been thrown into the red containers. Matt and Sam were pleased with their school’s effort at reducing waste on our planet.

  • 26、A team of six trucks carrying 130 tons of tomatoes were driven through the town’s narrow streets on August 31,2022. The teams on board gave out the tomatoes among the cheering crowd for an hour-long frenzy.

The annual festival-named as “the world’s biggest food fight”—has become a main draw for foreigners in the world. But in 2022, only 15,000 of the 20,000 available tickets were sold as fewer people from Asia made the trip because of COVID-19 travel restrictions.

The bang of fireworks set off the fight at noon and within minutes the streets were full of red slush. Some people wearing goggles to protect their eyes bent down to pick up tomatoes from ground to throw, while others lay in the slush.

“We have come to the ‘Tomatina’ because it’s the funniest thing we have seen here,” Mexican tourist Patricio told the local television station.

Since 2013 visitors had to pay for their taking part in the festival. The town uses this method to control the growing numbers who would like to come to the event, which was last held in 2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We were really looking forward to starting our beloved party again. We wanted once again to throw tomatoes at each other and set free all the adrenaline(肾上腺素). We build up the adrenaline during the last two years.” said the town councilor for tourism Marla Valles. The food fight is followed by activities including concerts and contests which last into the night. The “Tomatina” started in 1945 when locals fighting in the street at a local festival took tomatoes from a store and then dropped them off in 2002 Spain’s tourism secretary named the event a “festivity of international tourist interest” because of its popularity. The “Tomatina” has encouraged similar celebrations in Colombia, Costa Rica, Chile and the US.

【1】Why were only 15,000 available tickets sold in 2022?

A.Because the town wasn’t big enough.

    B.Because the festival wasn’t popular.

    C.Because tickets were too expensive.

D.Because COVID-19 was still going on.

【2】What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?

    A.The place of the “Tomatina”

    B.The scene of the “Tomatina”

    C.The history of the “Tomatina”

    D.The influence of the “Tomatina”

【3】What does the underlined part “We build up the adrenaline during the last two years” mean?

A.We were in bad health during the last two years.

B.We didn’t have any sports during the last two years.

C.We joined in the “Tomatina” during the last two years

D.We couldn’t hold the festival during the last two years.

【4】The main purpose of the passage is to _______.

A.tell the importance of the food fight

B.talk about the world’s biggest food fight

C.show different ideas about the food fight

D.encourage people to take part in the event

  • 27、People often think of the North Pole (北极) and the South Pole as similar frozen (冰冻的) wastelands. They are both places with very low temperatures and few people live there. However, the North and South Poles are not much alike as people may imagine.

The North Pole has no land, only thick ice. Temperatures hardly ever go above 32°F, at which water turns into ice. Most of the time, it stays below zero. In winter temperatures are usually as low as -30°F.

Although conditions were very poor, people tried for many centuries to reach the North Pole. About 100 years ago, two men, Robert Peary and Mathew Henson, were able to get to this environment full of troubles and difficulties. They reached the North Pole on March 8th, 1909. It was really a hard trip for them.

There are few things more dangerous than crossing the Arctic (北极) on foot. People who stayed there may face many problems: very low temperatures, sudden storms, and even hunger. Most of the area is uninhabited. Few people can live in such a difficult place.

People might think that with such low temperatures for most of the year, the ice would be thick and hard. However, this is not true in the Arctic. The movement of the ocean water under the ice may often cause many different changes on the surface. Sometimes the ice breaks into two opening lanes of water (水道) called “leads”. Anyone who falls into a lead can be frozen to death in a few minutes.

【1】This passage is probably from ________.

    A.a book review

    B.a science book

    C.a school report

    D.a computer magazine

【2】According to the passage, what happened about 100 years ago?

A.Two men succeeded in getting to the North Pole.

B.Temperatures in the North Pole went above 32° F.

C.The environment in the North Pole suddenly became worse.

D.The North Pole changed into thick ice because of the temperatures.

【3】What does the underlined word “uninhabited” probably mean in Chinese?

    A.气候恶劣的

    B.充满危险的

    C.困难重重的

    D.无人居住的

【4】The reason for the ice to break into two opening lanes of water is ________.

    A.that the temperature suddenly drops

B.that the water under the ice is frozen

C.that the ocean water under the ice moves

D.that the surface is covered with lots of ice
