  • 25、   What do people do with their old, out of date but still useful computers? Most people don’t know what to do with them. Many old computers are put away in homes. Many more are simply thrown away as the rubbish.

Finally, some companies are thinking of ways to bring down the number of old computers. Sony has agreed to help recycle old Sony products(产品). Dell, Hewlett Packard and other companies now also take back some old computers.

In some countries, laws have been passed, too. Computer companies have to pay for collecting and recycling their used products. And 70% of computer waste must be recycled. The idea behind the laws is that computer companies themselves should pay for the cost. That will encourage them to make computers that are easier and cheaper to repair and upgrade(升级).

Yet while many people are throwing away good computers, others cannot afford them at all. Hundreds of organizations are working to solve this problem. They collect and repair old computers. Some also teach others how to repair computers. The computers then go to schools, charities(慈善团体) and people who need them. Giving a used computer to one of these organizations can turn one person’s rubbish into someone else’s useful things and cut down waste, too.

  • 26、I was pleased at running away from Long John Silver though I knew he was still somewhere nearby on the island.

As I was trying to find a safer place to hide myself, I heard some men talking close by. It was Silver and Tom.

“I want you with me!” Silver shouted, “when we have the treasure, there’s gold for you too.” “No,” cried Tom, “I told you. I’m not a murderer. You’re guilty, all of you!” Sadly, these were the last words of Tom. It was a gunshot, Silver’s gun.

I moved away quickly and quietly. I ran fast, not thinking about the direction I was taking. Suddenly, I saw a figure move quickly from tree to tree. What it was, whether a bear or a man or a monkey? Silver himself appeared less terrible to me now.

As the figure was getting closer to me. It was a man. “Who are you?” I asked.

“Ben Gunn,” he answered. “I’m poor Ben Gunn, and I haven’t spoken with a man these three years. Who are you, mate?” “Jim,” I told him.

“Now, Jim, tell me is that Flint’s ship?” he asked in fear, pointing to the ship which I ran away from.

“No, and Flint is dead. But there are some of Flint’s hands aboard.”

“Not a man… with one… leg?” Ben asked in a tremulous voice, with his pale face and scared eyes.

“You mean Silver? He once worked as a cook on the ship.” I added. “Now, he is also on the island to find Flint’s treasure. He wants to kill us and take over the ship!”

“Good boy,” he said, “I was on Flint’s ship when he buried(埋)the treasure, he and six strong seamen. But, when he returned, he himself alone, and the six all died. How he made it, not a man except him could make out. It was a battle, a murder, and a sudden death—him against six.”

Suddenly, the noise of explosions(爆炸)stopped our talking…

Unlike the professional guides(专业导游), the volunteer greeters act more like neighbours. They take visitors to visit the city–either on foot or public traffic—to discover favourite neighbourhoods, cafes and parks.

All the programs work a little differently, but the basics(基本项目) are the same. The tours are free and last anywhere for two or four hours. Volunteers can be all ages, and their ages and interests try to match the travelers.

Like many greeter organizations, Big Apple accepts online donations to help with its daily costs.

    Houston(USA)

Houston Greeters will organize activities such as golf, biking or an outing to an Astros game(太空人队的比赛). Another activity is to arrange a tour in need of a particular interest.

    Chicago(USA)

The group organizes walks through Ukrainian Village on the Near North Side and Andersonville, home to Scandinavian restaurants and shops and Middle Eastern bakeries. Guides will also organize tours around themes such as fashion, film or public art.
