  • 25、Do you get angry when your friends sing loudly while you are trying to work or when your best friend does not wait for you after school?

If you do, you need to take control of your feelings. Getting angry with others can cause you to 1ose friends.

Gary Egeberg, an American high school teacher, has written My Feelings Are Like Wild Animals to help you control your feelings. It tells how to stay cool when bad things happen.

The book says that getting angry only makes problems worse. It can never make them better.

“Getting angry is not a natural way to act,” the book says. It is just a bad habit, like smoking.

The book says you can control your anger easily...all you have to do is to tell yourself not to be angry.

The book gives many suggestions to help you if you get angry easily. Here are the top three.

·Keep a record. Every time you get angry, write down why you are angry. Look at it later and you will see you get angry too easily.

·Ask your friends to stop talking to you when you get angry. This will teach you not to be angry.

·Do something different. When you get angry, walk away from the problem and go somewhere else. Try to laugh.

1If you often get angry, ________.

    A. nobody will wait for you after school   B. you will do worse in your study

    C. smoking can be a good help   D. you will have fewer friends.

    2Gary Egeberg is someone who________.

    A. knows how to control your feelings   B. makes a living by writing books

    C. likes keeping wild animals   D. gets angry easily with his students

3According to the book, one can put anger under control by ________.

    A. staying away from other people   B. never talking with your friends

    C. making yourself know not to get angry   D. singing loudly and dancing

4From the first suggestion we can make the conclusion(结论)that ________.

    A. writing helps to control one's feelings

    B. one's anger is built upon one's experience

    C. a good habit helps to take away a bad one

    D. people think better when they are cool

5Which is the best title of the passage?

    A. How to make more friends.   B. How to keep cool when angry.

    C. What to write about anger.   D. When to stop getting angry.

  • 26、Grown-ups are often surprised by how well they remember something they learned as children but have never practiced ever since. A man who has not had a chance to go swimming for years can still swim as well as ever when he gets back in the water. He can get on a bicycle after many years and still ride away. He can play catch and hit a ball as well as his son. A mother who has not thought about the words for years can teach her daughter the poem that begins “Twinkle, twinkle, little star” or remember the story of Cinderella or Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

One explanation is the law of overlearning, which can be stated as follows:Once we have learned something, additional learning trials(尝试)increase the length of time we will remember it.

In childhood we usually continue to practice such skills as swimming, bicycle riding, and playing baseball long after we have learned them. We continue to listen to and remind ourselves of words such as “Twinkle, little star” and childhood tales such as Cinderella and Goldilocks. We not only learn but overlearn.

The multiplication tables(乘法口诀表)are an exception to the general rule that we forget rather quickly the things that we learn in school, because they are another of the things we overlearn in childhood.

The law of overlearning explains why cramming(突击学习)for an examination, though it may result in a passing grade, is not a satisfactory way to learn a college course. By cramming, a student may learn the subject well enough to get by on the examination, but he is likely soon to forget almost everything he learned. A little overlearning, on the other hand, is really necessary for one’s future development.

【1】What is the main idea of paragraph 1?

A.People remember well what they learned in childhood.

    B.Children have a better memory than grown-ups.

C.Poem reading is a good way to learn words.

D.Stories for children are easy to remember.

【2】The author explains the law of overlearning by ________.

    A.presenting research findings

    B.setting down general rules

    C.making a comparison

    D.using examples

【3】According to the author, being able to use multiplication tables is ________.

    A.a result of overlearning

    B.a special case of cramming

C.a skill to deal with math problems

D.a basic step towards advanced studies

【4】What is the author’s opinion on cramming?

A.It leads to failure in college exams.

B.It’s helpful only in a limited way.

C.It’s possible to result in poor memory.

    D.It increases students’ learning interest.

  • 27、On the first day of school, our professor challenged us to get to know someone we didn’t already know. I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder. I turned round to find a little old lady looking up at me with a smile. She said, “Hi, handsome! I’m Rose. I’m 87 years old. Can I give you a hug?”

I laughed, “Of course! Why are you in college at such a young, innocent(幼稚的) age?” I asked. She jokingly replied, “I’m here to meet a rich husband, get married, have children and then travel around.”

“No seriously,” I asked. I was curious(好奇的) why she took on this challenge at this age.

“I always dreamed of having a college education, and now I’m getting one,” she told me.

We became friends. Every day for the next three months we would leave class together and talk for hours. Listening to this human “time machine” as she shared her years of wisdom(智慧) and experience with me was so interesting.

Over the year, Rose became a campus icon(校园偶像) and she easily made friends wherever she went.

She loved to dress up and enjoyed the attention from other students. She was living it up.

At the end of the term, we invited Rose to speak at a student gathering. I’ll never forget what she taught us. “We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. There are only a few secrets to staying young. You have to laugh and find humor every day. You’ve got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die. There are many people walking around who are dead, and they don’t even know it,” she said.

“There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. Anybody can grow older. That doesn’t take any talent or ability,” she added. “But growing up requires finding the opportunity in change. Have no regrets. People usually don’t have regrets for what they did, but rather for things they did not do.”

Rose taught us by example that it’s never too late to be all you can possibly be.

【1】Rose went to college because she ________.

    A.wanted to live longer

B.loved to stay with the young

    C.wanted to realize her dream

D.planned to enjoy her life there

    【2】In Rose’s opinion, “growing up” means ________.

    A.taking on more responsibilities

    B.people stop playing

C.people have a lot of regrets

    D.the opportunities of change

【3】What is the correct order of the following events?

    a. Rose became popular among students.

    b. Rose explained why she went to college.

    c. Rose gave an inspiring speech.

    d. Rose and the author became friends.

    e. Rose introduced herself to the author.

    A.e-d-a-b-c

    B.e-b-d-a-c

    C.d-e-a-c-b

    D.d-a-c-e-b

【4】From Rose’s life and experience, we can learn ________.

A.being nice to people can get respect from them

B.the secret of staying young is never stopping studying

C.do what we dream of and live without regret

D.no matter how old we are, we should keep playing
