  • 26、The First Lady’s Travel Journal: Touring the Forbidden City March 21, 2014

After visiting the Beijing Normal School, Madame Peng took Sasha and Malia, my mother, and me to the Forbidden City, which is right in the heart of Beijing.

For more than 2,000 years (up until 1912), China was ruled by emperors who descended (传递) from many different dynasties, or families, who passed ruling positions on from generation to generation and for nearly 500 years, the Forbidden City used as the emperor’s home.

Like the name suggests, the Forbidden City is large enough to be a city of its own it includes nearly 1,000 buildings and nearly 10,000 rooms.

In 1925, the new Chinese government turned the Forbidden City into a museum so that visitors like us from all over the world can stroll (闲逛) through many of the beautiful rooms and outdoor spaces.

The Forbidden City is too large to fully experience in a single visit, but highlights include the following: The Hall of Union and Peace (交泰殿) has almost 14,000 ornamental dragons. The Hall of Supreme Harmony (太和殿) is where the emperor watched birthday celebrations and coronation (加冕) ceremonies from his Dragon Throne (龙椅). And then there are the Imperial Gardens (御花园), where you can walk along the paths and pavilions, admiring the beautiful rock arrangements, flowers and cypress (柏树) trees.

While we loved our visit to the Forbidden City, we only wish we had more time to see everything. But then again, I’m not sure there could ever be enough time to fully enjoy all of the art and history in this wonderful place.

  • 27、If you’re working to become better or hoping to make a change, you’ll probably hear your family and friends say “go big or go home”. But sometimes big goals can shoot you in the foot. So, is it good to set high expectations?

Having high expectations could be beneficial. It can motivate (激励) you and increase your productivity. When you have high expectations for something, you’ll probably behave in ways which can help make your expectations come true. For example, if you believe that you’re able to score an A in a test, you will probably spend a lot of time working on it. And when you have to complete a written task before the deadline, having expectations on yourself can motivate you to keep on going. Another benefit of setting high expectations is that as you start meeting your expectations, you’ll be even more motivated to set higher goals for yourself. In addition, having high expectations on yourself doesn’t only benefit you. You’re likely to encourage others to be more productive! While there’s plenty of good that comes from setting high expectations, going overboard and being unrealistic in expectations can be detrimental.

Having high expectations sometimes can cause psychological (心理的) problems, such as worry and unhappiness. The findings of a study showed that a group of students who were expected to do perfectly by their parents experienced serious stress and anxiety (焦虑). Great expectations can also lead to great disappointment. This is especially true when you set expectations on other people whose actions you cannot control. For example, if you’re feeling alone and you call up your friends, you surely expect them to make you feel better. When this fails to happen, you will feel disappointed and displeased with your friends. To avoid this situation, you should accept your friends for who they are and set your expectations around reality.

It is hard to manage expectations, but the main goal is to find the perfect balance in setting a more realistic and achievable expectation. Learn to let go of things, especially when they don’t turn out the way you hoped. Most importantly, don’t be afraid to celebrate your victories no matter how small they are.

【1】If you have a high expectation on yourself, you will probably _________.

    A.discourage others

    B.work hard to realize it

    C.be more confident than before

    D.have high expectations on others

【2】The word “detrimental” in Paragraph 2 probably means “_________ ”.

    A.harmful

    B.unusual

    C.disappointing

    D.impossible

【3】The writer probably agrees that _________.

A.it’s wise to ask your friends to help you set expectations

B.stress is very likely to help you achieve your expectations

C.parents should avoid setting expectations on their children

D.we should set expectations on others according to the reality

【4】What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?

A.To offer advice on how to realize expectations.

B.To explain why people like to set high expectations.

C.To lead people to take a right attitude towards expectations.

D.To encourage people to set high expectations for themselves.
