四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、

If anyone knows what makes a great children’s book, it must be British writer and illustrator (插图画家) Jane Hissey. Her “Old Bear” books are very successful.

I met Jane at her home in the countryside and asked her what she thinks is the secret of a classic children’s book. “That’s a difficult one. I suppose it’s got to have the relationship with the child’s period of development—for young children, pictures on a page that are well-known, for older children, an experience. The book should be well-known, but hold some surprises too to keep the interest. It must be encouraging and enjoyable, but there are the things that happen every day.”

After the birth of her first child, Jane gave up teaching and began to work on her own artwork, drawing pictures of teddy bears. An editor (编辑) from a publishing company saw Jane’s work and invited her to do a children’s book. Over the years, from the first “Old Bear” book in 1988, her children have made a huge contribution to the plot (情节) of the book. She said, “When my children were very young, I often gave them the toys to play with and they had tea parties with them and so on. One of my bear characters, ‘Little Bear’, is the same age as Ralph, my youngest, who’s seven now. All the children have joined in my work and, in years to come, they will realise how much.”

“I hope I’ll know when people are getting tired of the characters. If they didn’t, I think I’d go on drawing them for fun,” Jane said, “My own children have been very useful to me in my work, but as they are older now, I’ll just have to hope that other people’s children can give me the confidence to continue.”

    【1】Who is Jane Hissey?

    A.A writer of children’s books.

B.A woman in “Old Bear” books.

    C.A housewife in the countryside.

    D.A woman with some secrets.

    【2】What is Jane’s opinion about a successful children’s book?

    A.There should be some surprises.

B.There should not be everyday life.

C.There should be lots of pictures.

    D.There should be well-known persons.

【3】What was Jane’s job before her first child was born?

    A.Worker.

    B.Editor.

    C.Teacher.

    D.Artist.

【4】How did Jane’s children help her in her work?

    A.By playing with the toys.

    B.By having tea parties together.

    C.By telling her their stories.

D.By giving her ideas for her stories.

【5】What does Jane think of her future work?

A.She will stop because her children are older now.

B.She is not sure about whether to continue her work.

C.She feels tired and doesn’t want to draw for people.

D.She will need more children to continue her work.

  • 25、   As parents, you can help children deal with the fear of natural disasters(自然灾害)and help protect them from being hurt by telling them how disasters happen, and what to do when disasters happen. Here are some tips for you:

Find out what disasters are possible in your area by visiting your local library.

Think about where your family should go if your house is destroyed.

Teach children the warning signs and signals in your area and practice what to do if a disaster happens.

Once you know the danger, ask your children to help check the safety in your house. You and your children can also work together on a disaster plan and prepare a disaster box with food, water and necessary tools.

If a disaster does happen, pay attention to your children’s behavior. Changes in behavior, for example, acting strangely, mean that your children need help.

Allow children to share their feelings about what has happened such as drawing a picture or writing a story.

Let friends and neighbors help you if they can.

Continue to tell your children that they are loved.

1The passage was written for ________.

  • 26、There can be magic in the touch of a hand that loves you. It brings comfort and a silent promise that says, “I am here and you are not alone.”

I remembered every detail about my children. As babies, they reached for me whenever they were hungry or tired or just needed to be held. Sometimes, if they woke in the night, just the touch of my hand would ease (使……放松) them back to sleep. They stuck to (紧跟) me when they took their first steps and we held hands when crossing streets and walking from the car to their classroom on their first day of school.

As they grew older and more independent (独立的), I noticed that they didn’t hold my hand much any more. I told myself it was part of growing up, and I should just be glad they could do things on their own now. But when you’ve been needed so much for such a long time, it’s hard to step back and feel unnecessary.

Then one day, I was visiting my oldest son in New York, where he was working as an actor on a TV show. As we were about to cross a busy street that was filled with traffic, he grabbed my hand and shouted, “Hang on to me, Mom,” then led me safely across.

At that moment, I realized two things. First, my boy had become a man. Second, it was clear that our roles had changed. We still needed each other, but in different ways from before.

That scene has replayed in different ways with each of my three children. They have all taught me to lean on (依赖) them just as they once leaned on me, and that we can always lean on each other. We live miles apart, but stay in touch every day. There is magic and comfort and healing in the touch of a hand that loves you, even if it “touches” you from afar.
