24、Teenager Jake Deham was skiing(滑雪) with his family in the USA when he fell over and lost one of his skis. His family didn’t know that he had a problem. They kept on skiing. When they got to the foot of the mountain, there was no sign of Jake.
Jake couldn’t find his ski anywhere. In the end, he decided to take off his other ski and walk down the mountain. But he couldn’t work out the right way to go.
It was now getting dark and he was a long way from any place of safety. He knew that he might die that night in the cold temperatures. But Jake kept calm(镇定). Nine hours after he lost his ski, he found a team of worker who came to save him. He was safe!
His mum was very happy when she heard the news. Amazingly, Jake didn’t even have to go to hospital. He got through the terrible experience without any injuries.

25、Thirty years ago, Lake Ponkapog in Hartwell was full of life. Many birds and animals lived beside the water which was full of fish. Now there are few birds, animals and fish. People polluted the lake water.
How did this happen? First, we must think about how water gets into Lake Ponkapog. When it rains, water comes into the lake from all around. In the past, there were forests all around Lake Ponkapog, so the rainwater was clean.
Now there are many homes around the lake. People often use chemicals in their gardens. They also use chemicals inside their houses for cleaning or killing insects. There are many factories. Factories use chemicals to produce products and some chemicals fall onto the ground from cars or trucks. When it rains, the rainwater picks up all the chemicals from homes, factories, cars and trucks and then carries them into the lake. They pollute the water and kill the animals.
Boats on the lake are also a problem. Lake Ponkapog is a popular place for motorboats. But oil and gas from boats often leak(泄漏) into the lake. So more harmful chemicals go into the water in this way.
People in Hartwell are worried. They love their lake and want to save it. Will it be possible? A clean lake must have clean rainwater going into it. Clean rainwater is possible only if people are more careful about chemicals at home and at work. They must also be more careful about gas and oil and other chemicals on the ground. And they mustn’t use motorboats any more on the lake. All these may change people’s life. Only then Lake Ponkapog can be a beautiful, clean lake again.

From the time each of my children started school, I packed their lunches. And in each lunch I packed, I left a note. The note might be a thank-you for a special moment, or a few words of encouragement for the coming test or sporting event.
When they were little, they loved their notes. And when I went back to teaching, they even put notes in my lunches. As they grew older, my elder son, Marc, told me that he no longer needed my daily notes. Telling him that he no longer needed to read them but I still needed to write them, I continued the tradition until the day he graduated.
Six years after high school graduation, Marc called and asked if he could stay at home for a couple of months. He had spent those years well, and he was very successful. He lived far away from home. With his younger sister leaving for college, I was especially looking forward to seeing Marc at home.
Since I was still making lunch every day for his younger brother, I packed one for Marc, too. Imagine my surprise when I got a call from my 24-year-old son, complaining (抱怨) about his lunch.
“Did I do something wrong? Aren’t I still your kid? Don’t you love me any more, Mom?” he asked.
I laughingly asked him what was wrong.
“My note, Mom,” he answered. “Where’s my note?”
This year my younger son will be in high school. He, too, has said that he is too old for notes. But like his elder brother and sister, he will receive those notes till the day he graduates.

27、Global Positioning Systems (全球定位系统) are now a part of everyday driving in many countries. These satellite-based systems provide turn-by-turn directions to help people get to where they want to go. However, they can also cause a lot of problems, sending you to the wrong place or leaving you completely lost. Many times, the driver is to blame. Sometimes a GPS mistake is responsible. Most often, says Barry Brown, it is a combination of the two.
Barry Brown is with the Mobile Life Centre in Stockholm, Sweden. He told about an incident involving a friend who had flown to the eastern United States. There he borrowed a GPS equipped car to use during his stay.
Mr. Brown says,“They just plugged (插) in an address and then set off to their destination. And, then it wasn’t until they were driving for thirty minutes that they realized they actually put in their home address on the West Coast. So again, the GPS is kind of‘garbage in garbage out’.”
Mr. Brown says this is a common human error, but what makes the problem worse has to do with some of the shortcomings of GPS equipment. He says,“One problem with a lot of the GPS units is they have a very small screen and they just tell you the next turn. Sometimes that means it is not really giving you the overview that you would need to know, and it’s going to the wrong place.”
Barry Brown has written a paper based on his research. The paper lists several areas where GPS systems can cause confusion for drivers. These include maps that are outdated, incorrect or difficult to understand.
To make GPS systems better, says the paper, we need a better understanding of how drivers, passengers and GPS systems work together.
【1】According to Barry Brown, in most cases, ________ are blamed for the problems.
A.human errors
B.GPS errors
C.errors caused by both drivers and GPS
D.errors caused by putting in a wrong address
【2】What does the underlined phrase “garbage in garbage out” most probably imply in the third paragraph?
A.Rubbish in rubbish out.
B.GPS is just as smart as human beings.
C.The GPS system is useless.
D.GPS will not correct human errors.
【3】What is one of the GPS’s shortcomings according to Mr. Brown?
A.It provides turn to turn for the driver.
B.The screen is too small to be seen clearly.
C.It has the latest maps in the device.
D.It doesn’t give the driver the overview.
【4】What can be inferred from the whole passage?
A.A GPS system is not always reliable.
B.Maps nowadays are not correctly printed.
C.A larger screen is needed in a car.
D.A GPS system tells you where to turn.
【5】What is mainly talked about in the passage?
A.GPS system is very important for drivers.
