  • 24、Having a family means more than just sharing DNA; it also means having a safety net when bad things happen.

Gean didn’t have that safety net on the worst day of her life back in January 2021. That day, Gean’s husband of 58 years died in their home. When police arrived at the scene, they discovered Gean and her husband had been living in conditions so bad, so they decided the house was not safe and must be repaired at once. With no children or relatives to help her, Gean suddenly found herself homeless while also struggling with the loss of her husband. That’s when a neighbor she hardly knew came over and told her, “Don’t worry, we’re going to help you.”

Carmen Silva and her husband live in a small, three-bedroom home across the street from Gean’s house. • 25、One of my most embarrassing experiences happened while I was traveling to Peru alone.

The trip took me through a beautiful desert. I was quite excited. I shared a car with four other people. At one point, I was sitting in the front seat and it was getting really hot in the car.

Our driver only spoke Spanish, and I spoke wonderful Spanish, too—or at least I thought I did.

“Estoy caliente!” I said, looking right at the driver. To my surprise, instead of opening the window, he only looked at me in surprise. I thought perhaps my New York accent (口音) made him confused (迷惑的). “Estoy caliente!” I said again, this time in a more local-sounding accent. He looked even more confused.

Suddenly, a native Spanish speaker in the back seat spoke up in English, “Umm, I guess you want to tell the driver you’re beautiful, right?”

I was so embarrassed. My face turned bright red. I explained what I meant to him in English. He laughed loudly. He talked with the driver in Spanish, and everyone else in the car laughed. Of course, the driver opened the window in the end.

After the journey, I shared my story with my daughter Helen. She laughed, “Mom, I must study hard in order not to make mistakes like yours! How embarrassing!”

【1】The writer meant “________” by saying “Estoy caliente!”

    A.I feel hot!

    B.I’m beautiful!

    C.I feel embarrassed!

    B.when to travel to Peru

C.the difference between English and Spanish

    D.an embarrassing travel experience

Apple released (发行) its new products called iPhone 11 on Tuesday. Interestingly, an Apple engineer compared iPhone ll with Huawei smartphones. In the 12 years of iPhone, this is the first time Apple has compared its product with that of Huawei.

Huawei should expect the competition from Apple. Since iPhone sales dropped 30 percent to 36.4 million in the first quarter of 2019,Apple may take a more active to increase sales. For example, the cheapest model Apple released on Tuesday costs $699, less than last year's iPhoneXR.

Also, Apple is adding more value to iPhones. For example, the new iPhones have A13 bionic processors. It’s said to be the fastest of its kind. And the new super retina XDR display (显示屏) in iPhone ll is a pro (专业的) display, the brightest display ever.

However, no new iPhone ll model is compatible (兼容的) with 5G networks And 5G iPhones won't appear until next year. By contrast (相比之下), Huawei released Mate20X, which fits 5G networks, in February. Which means Huawei is leading the global 5G market.

Apple is clinging (坚持) on to the principle (原则) of faster, bigger clearer, while Huawei is embracing (拥有) the 5G technology. Nobody knows which company will dominate (主导) the market in the future, but one thing is certain -- the future needs breakthroughs (突破).

    正确的写“A”,错误的写“B”。

1According to the passage, the smartphone of Huawei sold better than that of Apple in the first quarter of 2019.

2Compared with iPhoneXR, the price of iPhone ll is much higher.

3PhoneXR has A13 bionic processors and super retina XDR display as well.

4At present, Huawei has already been the leader of the globe 5G market.

5In the writer's opinion, Huawei will take the place of Apple Because it is embracing the 5G technology.
