24、Thousands of years ago, in the south of ancient China, there lived Shennong, a man who had an ox (牛) head and human body. Seeing that local people were suffering from disease, he built ladders (梯子) and houses on a high mountain to store hundreds of medical plants. To remember him, people named the place Shennongjia.
The legend (传说) makes Shennongjia in Hubei an exciting place for tourists. Traveling there is a unique experience, as you can see sceneries of the four seasons from different altitudes (海拔). “When the bottom of the mountain is summer, the top is spring and while the foothill is autumn, the top is covered with ice,” local people say of the special climate (气候) of Shennongjia.
Shennongjia is also home to 5,000 species (物种) of animals and plants. Many animals in danger live there, such as the golden monkey, the clouded leopard and the Asian black bear.
One interesting and mysterious (奇妙的) thing about Shennongjia is its legend of wild men. Some people once claimed (声称) that they saw big prints or big-foot creatures (生物). Yet so far, scientists haven’t proved it is true and some say they are just bears.

25、Chemical reactions (反应)make for some great experiments (实验). You can make use of the CO2 (carbon dioxide) given off by a baking soda (小苏打)and vinegar (醋)reaction to blow up your balloon!
What you’ll need
★ Balloon ★ Soft drink bottle ★ About 40 ml of water
★ Vinegar ★ A teaspoon of baking soda
Instructions
★ Before you begin, make sure that you pull the balloon long to make it as easy as possible to blow up.
★ Put the 40 ml of water into the soft drink bottle.
★ Add the baking soda and mix it with water.
★ Put the vinegar in and quickly put the balloon over the mouth of the bottle.
What’s happening?
If all goes well, then your balloon should inflate! Adding the vinegar to the baking soda creates a chemical reaction. The baking soda is a base (碱), while the vinegar is an acid (酸). When the two are put together, they create CO2. The gas rises up and escapes through the soft drink bottle. However, it doesn’t escape the balloon, pushing it outwards and blowing it up.

27、My best friend and I made our first trip to Ireland less than a year ago. I wasn’t very excited about it at the very beginning. But my uncle wanted me to visit Ireland and offered to pay for my trip. Then I did. All of the words “magical, charming and memorable” don’t even describe what Ireland is. Our favourites were Kilkenny, Cobh and Killarney. We did a self-driver tour.
We stayed in a castle in Dublin for two days, where my ancestors(祖先) came from. The town we thought we might be bored in was Kilkenny, but we loved every minute we were there. There were so many places to explore and the pictures we took were beautiful.
It was so exciting to see the little village of Cobh and know it was the last stop for the Titanic(a famous ship) at that time. We loved the visitor centre there and the little shops. We never got any bad food there. It was so mouth-watering at every stop! And when we stayed in Westmeath, we saw the Trim Castle through the windows and found some scenes from Brave Heart which was filmed there. We were so excited. Again, more beautiful pictures were taken in that tiny town.
We love the country, the people, the food and the magic. We would go back very soon. I was so thankful for my uncle who had given me the chance to be there.
I have no words to adequately describe our trip. Go, explore the small villages, eat and enjoy! I still look at my pictures and can’t believe I was actually there.
