25、My mom’s life was a busy one. Raising four kids on her own was a full time job in itself, but she also worked outside the home. Surprisingly, she always seemed to find a little bit of extra time for us despite (不管) her schedule (预定计划).
She would take us over to my aunt’s in the evening when she worked as a waitress in a small diner. We would just be finished with school and have to hurry, so my mom would be on time for work. I thought she would pass us over to our aunt and hurry off as soon as we made it through the front gate, but that didn’t happen. Instead, we would sit on the porch (门廊), my mom in her waitress uniform, and we would rock in my aunt’s big wooden swing (秋千) and talk about what happened that day.
“I learned how to add numbers up to the hundreds,” my sister Sandy would say.
“That’s wonderful,” my mom would reply, holding her tight.
“I learned how to write my name!” Larry, my younger brother, would shout.
My mom would get a piece of paper and a pencil out of her purse and hand it to my brother. “Show me how you do it,” she’d ask softly.
“Do you have enough time to hear what I did today?” I’d ask her.
Mom would smile at me and nod. “I’m never too busy for something important like that!”
She gave us the gift of time again and again throughout the years. Later on in her life, when she came to live with us after her retirement (退休), my mom gave the gift of time to my children too. They would run around excitedly, asking their grandma if she would play with them, or read them a story, or go for a walk with them. By then my mom had health problems, but she would always nod and sit down and read to them or tell them stories about when she was a little girl. Those moments were a wonderful gift that my children still talk about and treasure.
In the last few years of her life, I would take her to lunch or sit with her on the porch, and we would talk about the past, the dream of the future, and just enjoy being with each other. My mom would listen as I shared all of my hopes, my fears, and my dreams for my family. I would look at her and ask her if she minded me taking up so much of her free time.
“Nonsense,” she’d tell me. Then she’d give me a wink and say, “I’m never too busy to spend time with you. It’s one of the greatest joys of my life.”
I will always remember those wonderful words and the loving heart behind them. It is a gift my mom give to me for which I will forever be grateful. In this busy world of ours, and in a life filled with challenges, she always had time to share her joy with me.

26、 Betty was familiar with Hopelink's Carnation food bank, but that didn't make it easier for her to take that first step inside when she found herself needing help a few years ago.
"I sat out in the car for a long time before I finally went in," Betty says. "But I knew I had to do it."
Betty and her husband lived together happily. When her husband passed away in 2008, everything changed. Soon, Betty realized she needed to ask for help.
"When Dave was still alive, I never thought it would happen," she says. "I never really thought I would have to go to a food bank. I thought I'd be able to keep my job longer, and I thought we'd have more money to save."
Things didn't work out that way. And finally, Betty found herself in need of help, sitting in her car outside Hopelink, working up the courage to take that first step.
Once inside, she felt welcome immediately.
"A dear lady – I think she was a volunteer – came up to me, and whether she saw that I was scared … I think so; I feel that way," Betty says. "And she said, 'you know, there's a lot of us that have to come here.' And I went into the food bank, and it was wonderful. I learned there were other people having a hard time … it wasn't just me."
Betty started visiting the food bank twice a month, and began to look forward to it. It gave her a chance to get out of the house and dress up a bit – often in her favorite color pink – and meet other people and check in with the regular volunteers.
While Hopelink has helped Betty stay healthy and independent in her later years, it's knowing that someone cares that means the most.
"I appreciate Hopelink, I really do," Betty says. "They've helped me in a million ways since Dave died. And without them, I don't know what I would do. Without the food bank, I'm not sure I could make it. I know I couldn't."
Since 1971, Hopelink has served homeless and low-income families and individuals in King and Snohomish counties; providing stability (稳定) and helping people get the skills and knowledge they need to exit poverty for good.

27、On July 23rd, China successfully sent its first Mars probe by Long March-5 Y4 rocket into the scheduled orbit. 2020 is regarded as the year of Mars as three spaceships are on a 505-million-kilometer journey to Mars. China, the US and the UAE(阿联酋)have all sent their probes to the red planet.
Timing is everything. Every 26 months, the window of the opportunity opens. During that time, the Sun, the Earth and the Mars are in line, and the earth stays in the middle. The distance between Mars and the Earth can be the shortest. That means the journey will take six or seven months instead of the usual nine months. The window of opportunity began on July 15, 2020 and ended on August 15, 2020.
To make a soft landing on Mars has never been an easy job. Besides the long travel distance, scientists think one of the biggest challenges is the seven minutes of terror(恐怖七分钟). That is, the probe needs to reduce the speed from 20, 000 kilometers ever hour to zero in seven minutes to land on the Mars. The atmosphere(大气层)of Mars is very thin. It could not provide enough help for the landing. What’s worse, there are a lot of sandstorms on Mars, making the landing much more difficult.
