24、A couple from Miami, Bill and Simone Butler, spent sixty-six days in a life-raft(救生艇) in the seas of Central America after their boat sank.
Twenty-one days after they left Panama in their boat, Simony, they met some whales. “They started to hit the side of the boat,” said Bill, “and then suddenly we heard water.” Two minutes later, the boat was sinking. They jumped into the life-raft and watched the boat go under the water.
For twenty days they had tins of food, biscuits, and bottles of water. They also had a fishing-line and a machine to make salt water into drinking water — two things which saved their lives. They caught eight to ten fish a day and ate them raw(生的). Then the line broke. “So we had no more fish until something very strange happened. Some sharks came to feed, and the fish under the raft were afraid and came to the surface. I caught them with my hands.”
About twenty ships passed them, but no one saw them. After fifty days at sea their life-raft was beginning to break up. Then suddenly it was all over. A fishing boat saw them and picked them up. They couldn’t stand up.
So the captain carried them onto his boat and took them to Costa Rica. Their two months at sea was over.

25、Have you ever heard of satellites (卫星)? What are they used for?
Satellites are helping to forecast(预报)the weather now. They are in space, and they can reach any part of the world. The satellites take pictures of the atmosphere(大气), where the weather forms. They send these pictures to the weather stations. So meteorologists (气象学家) can see the weather of any part of the world. From the pictures, the scientists can often say how the weather will change so that it can work better for people.
Nowadays, more and more countries have weather satellites. Nearly five hundred weather stations in sixty countries receive satellite pictures. When they receive the new pictures, the meteorologists compare them with the earlier ones. Perhaps they may find the clouds have changed during the last few hours. This may mean that the weather on the ground may soon change, too. In their next weather forecast, the meteorologists can say the weather will change soon.
So the weather satellites are a great help to the meteorologists. Before satellites were invented, the meteorologists could only forecast the weather for about 24 or 48 hours. Now they can make good forecasts for about two weeks. Soon they may be able to forecast the weather for more than two weeks or more ahead.
With the development of the society, weather satellites will work better and better in people’s life.

Some of the world's most famous musicians recently got together in Paris and New Orleans to celebrate the first International Jazz Day. UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) recently set April 30 as a day to make more people know about jazz music.
Though the celebrations are pretty great in the U.S., jazz audiences (观众) grow older, and the number of them continues to become smaller. As a result, the music has failed to connect with the young people.
It's Jason Moran's job to help change that. As the Kennedy Center's artistic adviser for jazz, Moran hopes to encourage more young people to become more interested in jazz, so he tries his best to make the music easier to understand, and keep its history and culture.
"It seems Jazz is not really a part of the American's lives nowadays," Moran tells National Public Radio's reporter Neal Conan." What I'm hoping to complete is that the younger, even teens start to reconsider and understand that jazz does not only belong to the black anymore. It cannot be left out, and it should step with the times."
Moran says one of the problems with jazz today is that few singers really know how to perform this kind of music as before. "The music can't be shown today in the way as it was in 1908 or 1958. It has to continue to change because the way the world works is not the same," says Moran.
Last year, Moran worked on a project. He planned a dance party for Fats Waller's music "Waller's dance music is full of energy, which can make all the audiences light up quickly" says Moran. "For me, it's the music that can bring back old days. In music, we can realize where our emotions (情感) lie. It gets us into a dialogue about our emotions and our thoughts. Sometimes we have already lost the deepest feeling in our mind, but the music helps to recall it," says Moran, "So I want to continue those dialogues. Those are the things I want to own."
