24、Every year, more than 2,600 children arrive in Britain. We ask some new arrivals what they like best about their new lives and what’s different from home.
Jarek, Poland
I don’t know anybody from Poland here, but I’m lucky because the English boy next door is very friendly and kind. We are in the same class! I like teachers here. At home, the teachers seem a bit strict and serious. There are a lot of rules, too. Here, teachers are patient and don’t give much homework. We students go out of school and buy pizza or burgers at lunchtime. We can’t do that in Poland.
Zinah, India
It’s too cold here! I hate doing sports, especially outside in winter. The teacher here is very serious about sports. I prefer science and maths. I love the maths class because the teacher is really funny, just like my maths teacher in India. The school is so big and some students seem unfriendly, and I’m from a small village school, so I think it’s hard to communicate with them.
Daisy &Luck, the USA
My sister and I like living here. It’s cool! My sister loves the British accent (口音). Everybody here is very polite. But we don’t understand all your strange words—we say “yard” not “garden”, and “apartment” not “flat”. The food is better here. There’s Chinese, Indian and Thai. At home we eat too much fast food.

25、When I arrived, it was early morning and it was raining. I looked to the east---the sky was becoming grey. I got out of the car, went through a gate and walked along a dark path. There was nothing to see, but I knew it was there.
After about a mile, a stranger appeared beside the path. “Am I going the right way?” I asked. He knew where I was going. “Yes, “he replied, “you’ll get there in five minutes.” Finally, I came to some rocks and stopped. I looked over them, but it was silent and there was no sign of it.
Suddenly, the rain stopped and the clouds cleared. The sun rose behind me and shone on the rocks. Far below me, the ground fell away and down to a river. I was looking across one of the wonders of the natural world ___the Grand Canyon.
I looked down to the Colorado River, a silver stream nearly one mile below me. If you put the two tallest buildings in the world on top of each other at the bottom of the canyon, they still would not reach the top. Then I looked across to the other side of the canyon. It was about fifteen miles away, maybe more. Finally, I looked to my left and to my right, and on both sides the canyon went far away for more than 200 miles. The Grand Canyon was not just big. It was huge!

26、 Stonchenge is a famous place in England, one of the oldest and most mysterious(神秘的)places in the world. It was probably put up between 1800 B. C. and 1400 B. C. It lies in the city of Salisbury, which is about 13 km south of Stonchenge.
Stonehenge was a ring of standing stones, including upright(垂直的)stones with a horizontal(水平的)stone lying across the top. When it was completed, it was made up of a double circle of stones with two more groups of stones outside the circles. Over time, however, many of the stones have been broken by wind and rain, only a small number is still standing today.
It is unclear who built Stonchenge or even how it was built. Many of the stones must have been transported over 250 miles to Stonchenge. Single stones, some of them weighing about four tons, must have been sent on rivers and rolled over land on tree trunks(树干). They can’t have been carried! The men who moved the stones didn’t have wheels or horses. Each stone had to be moved by hand.
The purpose of Stonchenge is just as mysteries. It has been called a place to honor ancestors, a sun temple, an ancient clock and a calendar. Some people think the stones have been built in a special way to mark sunrise and sunset at certain times during the year, because the sun shines directly into the center of the stones. Others have even thought that it was an ancient generator, which is a machine to produce electricity, because it was built along energy lines in the earth and was used to make use of the earth’s natural energies.

27、If you have seen the movie Journey to the Center of the Earth(《地心历险记》) you may be impressed by the underground forest world. But such worlds exist(存在) in real life, too!
In May 2022, a team of Chinese scientists found a giant sinkhole(天坑) in Leye county Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region. It is 306 meters long, 150 meters wide and 192 meters deep.
According to Xinhua News Agency, Leye county is called “the museum of sinkholes” where people have found 30 sinkholes so far. These sinkholes are formed because of the unique karst landscape. Karst is an area of land made up of limestone (石灰岩), which is a soft rock that dissolves(溶解) in water. When rainwater flows through little cracks(裂缝) in the bedrock, the cracks slowly grow into tunnels and then big caves. Over time, a cave can get too big and its ceiling then falls slowly, opening up huge sinkholes. What’s amazing is the giant size of China’s sinkholes.
“In China, you have this incredibly, visually spectacular karst with enormous sinkholes. In other parts of the world, sinkholes might be only a meter or two in diameter(直径),” US researcher George Veni told Live Science according to Xinhua, in the newly found sinkhole, researchers found trees up to 40 meters high and some other plants that came up to their shoulders.
Sinkholes don’t just look cool, they are gifts of life. Many of them are home to ancient plant, animal and microbe life. They also provide a water source to 700 million people worldwide.

【3】A sinkhole is formed in the following order:
