  • 25、Most people love animals. Many children’s books use animals as the main characters. Many people look after animals as pets. The love for animals may be why both children and adults (成年人) enjoy going to zoos.

In the past, zoos were usually started by rich people. The first zoo was started by a queen in Egypt in 1500 BC. Raising animals was a way for people to show they were wealthy and powerful. Sadly the animals in the early zoos were not treated well. They didn’t receive enough attention or care.

Today, zoos still bring people pleasure, but they try to protect animals and teach people as well. Zoos must follow rules. People must provide animals with a clean place to live, food and water, and health care. In this way, the rules help protect the animals.

Some people think the rules are not enough. They want to do more to protect the animals they love. For example, people disapproved of the use of some large animals in shows. They thought the zoos didn’t have enough space for the animals to show. They also thought the animals were not treated properly. With so many people against the shows, the zoos decided to make a change.

People see animals in zoos. At the same time, they try to learn about and protect them. Both people and animals can get a lot from each other.

【1】How does the writer feel about the animals in the early zoos?

    A.He doesn’t care about them.

    B.He feels sad for them.

    D.He is afraid of them.

  • 27、   Money can’t buy happiness, right? Well, not true. According to a recent article in The Wall Street Journal(华尔街日报), over the past few years, new research has given us a much deeper understanding of the relationship(关系) between what we earn and how we feel. The research may show us the result: Yes, people who earn more money, generally speaking, are happier than those who earn little. But the research also shows that you have to spend your money properly if you expect it to bring you happiness. Here are some suggestions for you to spend your money in a better way:

    Buy experiences, not material goods.

In a recent study, Ryan Howell, a professor from San Francisco State University in the US, found that when people didn’t have enough money to enjoy a trip, they preferred to buy some material goods. But travelling with your family or friends may bring you more happiness and the wonderful memory of the travel experience will stay in your mind for many years.

Buy lots of little things, rather than one big thing.

No matter how much money you spend on something and how special that product is, you will get used to having it over time and it will become just another object. People like having new things, but the happiness it brings to you will soon disappear. Buying small things can give us small pleasures often and you can get different surprises and happiness from different small things.

Be sure to buy time, too.

It’s also important to consider how the things you buy will affect how you spend your time. For example, buying that big house in the countryside may seem to be a good idea, but according to The Wall Street Journal, people who spend more time on the way to work are not so happy as those who live near the workplace.

    Try giving it away.

Elizabeth Dunn, a professor of a University in Canada, found that in countries such as Canada, South Africa and Uganda, giving away money to the poor made people happier. This was even true when people were giving away even when they themselves were really poor.

【1】From the passage we know ________.

    A.Money sometimes can buy happiness

B.Money can’t buy happiness at all

    C.Money is not everything

D.People who earn more money are not happy

【2】Ryan Howell thought buying experience was better than buying material goods because ________.

A.people preferred travelling to buying things.

B.the memory of the travel experience will stay for a long time

    C.travelling is cheaper

    D.people are poor

【3】People may feel much happier if they ________.

    A.don’t give away money

B.buy a good house in the countryside

    C.live near the workplace

    D.buy what others have

【4】The best title of this passage may be “________”.

    A.How to spend money

    B.Ways to earn money

    C.Money

    D.How can money buy happiness?
