四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、   Money can’t buy happiness, right? Well, not true. According to a recent article in The Wall Street Journal(华尔街日报), over the past few years, new research has given us a much deeper understanding of the relationship(关系) between what we earn and how we feel. The research may show us the result: Yes, people who earn more money, generally speaking, are happier than those who earn little. But the research also shows that you have to spend your money properly if you expect it to bring you happiness. Here are some suggestions for you to spend your money in a better way:

    Buy experiences, not material goods.

In a recent study, Ryan Howell, a professor from San Francisco State University in the US, found that when people didn’t have enough money to enjoy a trip, they preferred to buy some material goods. But travelling with your family or friends may bring you more happiness and the wonderful memory of the travel experience will stay in your mind for many years.

Buy lots of little things, rather than one big thing.

No matter how much money you spend on something and how special that product is, you will get used to having it over time and it will become just another object. People like having new things, but the happiness it brings to you will soon disappear. Buying small things can give us small pleasures often and you can get different surprises and happiness from different small things.

Be sure to buy time, too.

It’s also important to consider how the things you buy will affect how you spend your time. For example, buying that big house in the countryside may seem to be a good idea, but according to The Wall Street Journal, people who spend more time on the way to work are not so happy as those who live near the workplace.

    Try giving it away.

Elizabeth Dunn, a professor of a University in Canada, found that in countries such as Canada, South Africa and Uganda, giving away money to the poor made people happier. This was even true when people were giving away even when they themselves were really poor.

【1】From the passage we know ________.

    A.Money sometimes can buy happiness

B.Money can’t buy happiness at all

    C.Money is not everything

D.People who earn more money are not happy

【2】Ryan Howell thought buying experience was better than buying material goods because ________.

A.people preferred travelling to buying things.

B.the memory of the travel experience will stay for a long time

    C.travelling is cheaper

    D.people are poor

【3】People may feel much happier if they ________.

    A.don’t give away money

B.buy a good house in the countryside

    C.live near the workplace

    D.buy what others have

【4】The best title of this passage may be “________”.

    A.How to spend money

    B.Ways to earn money

    C.Money

    D.How can money buy happiness?

  • 25、There are quite a few advantages of wearing school uniforms. The idea may seem disagreeable (意见不统一的) at first, but considering all the positive (积极的) effects coming from wearing uniforms you would be more likely to enjoy them.

Teachers love school uniforms because it helps provide an orderly learning environment. Having students dressed in uniforms may teach them how to present themselves in a neat and professional manner. It gives students the opportunity to learn how to dress like young ladies and gentleman. And they can focus their attention (集中注意力) on academics rather than style.

Purchasing (购买) school uniforms is easy and needs less hesitation and consideration. No matter what the school’s policy is, there are only specific essential (基本的) pieces to the wardrobe (服装) that are necessary, so it won’t break the bank. A few wardrobe items can last a long time. Parents could also enjoy an easy morning, as it will take less time to choose a set of clothes for the school day.

Students wearing uniforms will feel less pressure (压力) about what to wear or not to wear when their classmates are dressed similarly. Getting dressed before school becomes less of a chore (琐事) when students are limited in their choices, so there shouldn’t be any trouble about choosing an outfit for the day and getting ready quickly. Some students may not like the lack of individuality (个性) with a uniform, but some school dress code policies may offer them the opportunities to show their unique styles.

  • 26、   A feral child is a child who, from a young age, has lived with animals in the wild. What makes wild animals adopt these children and raise them as their own is a mystery. Since feral children have often had no contact with humans for a long time, they may be more like wild animals than people. Their stories, although often upsetting can teach us how people learn and use language — and perhaps even what it means to be human.

In Uganda in 1991, a tribeswoman saw a naked boy living with a troop of wild monkeys in the jungle. The woman was shocked and quickly told the people in her village about the boy. When they tried to take him away from the monkeys, the frightened boy threw sticks at them and climbed up a tree to hide. The monkeys fought fiercely, trying to stop the tribesmen from taking him away, but they did not succeed.

After his "rescue", the boy was taken to Kamuzinda Chritan Orphanage, outside Kampala, the capital city of Uganda. He was identified as John Ssabunnya, a boy who had disappeared three years earlier after his mother was murdered and his father went missing. John was only two years old when he disappeared.

John couldn't speak when he arrived at the orphanage. It was obvious that he did not know how to act in a human way-- he knew only how to behave like a monkey. However, he soon began to talk and was found to have a beautiful singing voice.

John shot to fame at the age of fourteen, when he toured the UK with a children's choir(合唱队). "His is a remarkable story. One day it could even be made into a film.” said tour organizer Hillary Cook.

1The underlined word "had no contact with" in paragraph 1 is closest to________.

A.had no patience with B.had no communication with

C.had no quarrel with D.had no choice but stay with

2What can we learn from Hillary Cook's words in the last paragraph?

A.John could not act like a human. B.John's experience is quite unusual.

C.John is like other boys in the choir. D.People saved John and protected him.

3It can be inferred from the passage that________.

A.feral children are born with the talent to talk with animals

B.feral children are sure to be back to the human community

C.all feral children can be successful after living with humans

D.the study of feral children may help the research on language

4The writer organizes the passage by_________.

    A.using numbers B.showing opinions C.telling a story D.listing reasons
