    Dear Lexie,

We got to Venice early this morning. You wouldn't believe it. It's like a floating(漂浮的) city, and I'm afraid it will sink or something. My mom's calling me. Gotta go!

    Mary

    Hey, Mary,

Venice sounds great. I looked it up online. The buildings all look like castles (城堡) or something. I hope to go there one day.

    Lex

    Hi, Lex,

It's about 7 pm here, so what time is it there? Probably you're at school right now. We went to a big square called San Marco today. There's like a million pigeons(鸽子). A guy put bird food on his jacket, and all these birds landed on him. When he walked, all the pigeons stayed on him. I took a thousand pictures.

    Mary

    Hey, Mary,

The pigeon guy seems crazy. There's no way I'd let a number of pigeons stand on me. Yuck! I can't wait to see the pictures. Can you e-mail one to me? I'll take it in tomorrow and show Benny. He likes pigeons.

    Lex

    Hi, Lex,

My camera is old-fashioned, so I can't e-mail pictures. Today we went to museums. Every other building here is a museum. I think people here must be very artistic or something.

    Mary

    Hey, Mary,

Yeah. I read that Michelangelo lived there. Did you see him? Oh, never mind. He's dead. Well, did you see any art by him? We had a math test today. And there's a new kid in class. Her name is Sydney. She's cool. She's from California.

    Lex

    Lex,

Tell me more about the new kid. Remember we're BFF, so don't get a new best friend. I'll be back on Saturday. Don't get a new BF before then, okay?

    Mary

    1Who is on the vacation?

  • 25、Is there a connection between music and language? According to recent studies, the answer is yes: Music helps develop certain language abilities in the brain.

A study from Northwestern University shows that playing a musical instrument can improve a person’s hearing ability. As a part of the study, two groups of people listened to a person talking in a noisy room. The people in the first group were musicians, while those in the second group had no musical training. The musicians were found to be able to hear better, because they learn to pay attention to certain sounds.

For example, when the violinists play in a band, they must listen closely to what they are playing and ignore the other sounds. In this way, musicians can hear certain sounds better, even in a room with lots of noise.

Gotfried Schlaug, a doctor at Harvard Medical School, works with stroke (中风) patients. Because of their illness, these people cannot say their names, addresses, or other information normally. However, they can still sing. Dr. Schlaug was surprised to use singing words to help his patients finally speak. Why does this work? Schlaug isn’t sure. Music seems to be able to make different parts of the brain active, including the bad parts. In some way, this helps patients use those parts of the brain again.

So music is not only enjoyable, but also good for us in many other ways. “Playing an instrument or singing,” says Nina Kraus, “can help us do better in school and keep our brain sharp as we get older.”

【1】What were the people asked to do in the study?

A.Listen to different kinds of music.

B.Make some noise in a room.

    C.Give some people musical training.

D.Listen to a person talking in a noisy room.

【2】What does the writer use the example of violinists to explain?

A.How musicians play in a band.

    B.How musicians make beautiful sounds.

C.Why musicians have better hearing ability.

D.Why musicians are afraid of lots of noise.

【3】What does the word “ignore” mean in the third paragraph?

    A.Listen to.

    B.Look at.

    C.Find out.

    D.Pay no attention to.

【4】How did Gotfried Schlaug help his stroke patients speak?

    A.By playing music for them.

    B.By using singing words.

C.By fixing the bad parts of their brains.

D.By teaching them to play instruments.

【5】What can be a proper title for the text?

    A.Ways of Playing Music

    B.Advice about Making Brains Active

    C.Results of Studying Stroke Patients

    D.Connection between Music and Language

  • 26、Thanks to the mass media(大众传媒), information travels fast. Reporter Xu interviews Dr. Gu, a mass media expert.

Xu: Good morning, Dr. Gu. People like to share information, don’t they?

Dr. Gu: Yes. Long ago, when early humans made a discovery, they told their friends. Information spread from person to person. However, mass media is different. It brings news and information to many people very quickly.

Xu: When did mass media begin?

Dr. Gu: In Tang Dynasty, people had the first newspaper. And in Song Dynasty, Bi Sheng invented the Movable Type Printing. His invention could quickly print many copies of a book. So today, millions of people can read newspapers around the world. Magazines are also popular because they focus on(专注于)one subject such as movies, fashion, or sports. Advertising helps to pay for the cost of publishing newspapers and magazines.

    Xu: What happened next?

Dr. Gu: Movies, or “moving pictures”, were invented over 100 years ago. At that time, people started to film news and events from around the world.

Xu: And then the television came next, right?

Dr. Gu: In fact, the radio came next. It began about the same time as movies, but the first radio station didn’t start until 1920. Today, there are over 44,000 radio stations around the world. People can listen to the news while they drive or work.

    Xu: When did television start?

Dr. Gu: It started in the 1930s. Now, television is everywhere, bringing entertainment to people. Some events are broadcast live while they are happening.

Xu: So people have a lot of ways to get the latest news, don’t they?

Dr. Gu: They do, but you mustn’t forget the latest way—the Web! Today, around 40% of the people in the world use the Web. The Web uses the Internet to give us 24-hour news. Also, with smartphones, people can access(访问)the Web wherever they go.

Xu: We live in very interesting times.

Dr. Gu: That’s true. It will be exciting to see what’s next in the world of mass media.

【1】What is the difference between magazines and newspapers according to Dr. Gu?

    A.Newspapers have more topics.

    B.Newspapers can spread information faster.

    C.Magazines are more expensive.

    D.Magazines appeared later than newspapers.

C.It’s very easy for people to access the Web while driving.

D.Readers should pay for the cost of publishing newspapers.

【4】What is the purpose of the interview?

A.To show how many ways we have for news.

B.To show how important mass media is to us.

C.To show how mass media developed for years.

D.To show how fast we spread information today.

  • 27、   Learning how to eat with chopsticks is not as difficult as it appears, and like all things in life, practice makes perfect! Follow the simple steps down below and practice often, soon you will also be eating smoothly.

Chinese food is often prepared and served in small size pieces, which makes it easy when eating with chopsticks.

    How do you use chopsticks?

    (1) Hold the first chopstick between your fourth and middle fingers. This chopstick keeps still, and it does not move. Your thumb should help keep it in place.

    (2) Make the second chopstick slide (滑动) between your thumb and index fingers. You move this chopstick by moving the index finger up and down. This movement will open and close the chopsticks, which is how you will pick up food.

As you practice, you will develop your “own” skills, and find out what works better for you. There is no right or wrong way in fact. Like holding a pencil, many people do it differently but the only goal is to write. With chopsticks, the goal is to get food in your mouth.

1The writer may think eating with chopsticks is _____.

    A.very difficult B.not so difficult

    C.very easy D.not so easy

2The first chopstick should be held _____.

A.between your thumb and index fingers

B.between your middle and index fingers

C.between your fourth and little fingers

D.between your fourth and middle fingers

3How can we open and close the chopsticks?

A.By moving the index finger up and down.

B.By moving the index finger left and right.

C.By moving the middle finger up and down.

D.By moving the middle finger left and right.

4According to the last paragraph, _____.

A.we must use chopsticks in a right way

B.the pencils can also be used as chopsticks

C.using chopsticks is the same as using pencils

D.different people may use chopsticks differently

五、短文填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 28、在短文的空格内填入适当的词,使其内容通顺,每空格限填一词,首字母已给。

If you suffer from shyness (羞怯), you are not alone, for shyness is a universal phenomenon.

It is not surprising that social scientists are exploring its environmental causes.

The first environmental cause of shyness may be a child’s home and family life. Today’s children are growing up in smaller families, with f【1】 relatives living nearby. Growing up in homes in which both parents work full time, children may not have the socializing experience of frequent visits by neighbors and friends. Because of their lack of social skills, they may begin to feel shy when they start school.

A s【2】 environmental cause of shyness in an individual may be one’s culture. In a large study made in Japan, 57 percent of people rated (评估) t【3】 as shy. Researchers Lynne Henderson and Philip Zimbardo say, “One explanation is that in Japan, a person’s s【4】 is credited externally to (表面上归因于) parents, grandparents, teachers, coaches, and others, while failure is entirely blamed on ( 完全归咎于) the person.” Therefore, Japanese learn not to take risks in public and rely i【5】 on group-shared decisions.

Technology may also play a role. In the United States, the number of young people who report being shy has r【6】 from 40 percent to 50 percent in recent years. Due to our huge advances in technology, watching television, playing video games, and surfing the Web have taken the place of recreational activities that involve social interaction (涉及交际互动) for many young people. Adults, too, are becoming more isolated as a result of technology. Face-to-face interactions with bank clerks, gas station attendants and shop assistants are no longer n【7】 because people can use machines to do their banking, fill their gas tanks, and order goods. In short, they become shy.

It appears that most people have experienced shyness at some time in their lives. Therefore, if you are shy, you have lots of company.
