24、In China , people’s living conditions in the cities have changed a lot in the ways of transportation in the past fifty years .
A survey shows that the number of people riding a bike or walking is always decreasing . In 1974 , more than 50% of people traveled to work on their own bikes , while by 2014 , less than 20% of travelers preferred cycling or walking to work . Now the number becomes much smaller .
At the same time , there was a large increase in the use of cars . In 1974 , very few people had a car . By 1994 , about a quarter of travelers drove to work . This increased again , until 2014 , about one third of travelers drove to work .

25、Thousands of years ago, in the south of ancient China, there lived a man called Shennong with an ox (牛) head and a human body. After seeing many local people were badly ill, he built ladders(梯子) and houses on a high mountain to hold hundreds of medical plants. To remember him, people named the place Shennongjia.
The story makes Shennongjia in Hubei a famous place for tourists. Travelling there is an exciting experience, because you can see beautiful sights of the four seasons from different altitudes(海拔). “When the bottom of the mountain is summer, the top is spring and while the foot of the hill is autumn, the top is covered with ice,” local people say of the special climate(气候) of Shennongjia.
Shennongjia is also home to 5,000 kinds of animals and plants. Many animals in danger live there, such as the golden monkey, the clouded leopard and the Asian black bear.
One interesting thing about Shennongjia is its story of wild men. Some people once said that they saw very big footprints(脚印). Yet so far, scientists haven't believed it is true and some say they are just bears.

Some people believe that schools will no longer be necessary in the near future. They said that because of the Internet and other new technology, there is no longer any need for school buildings, classes or teachers. Perhaps this will be true one day, but if the world has no schools, I can’t imagine(想像) how our society will be, In fact, we should learn how to use new technology to make schools better. We should invent a new knid of school that is linked to libraries, museums, science centers, labs and even companies. Technological companies should create(创造) learning programs for schools. Scientists or professors could give talks through the Internet. TV networks and local stations could develop programs about things students are actually studying in school. Labs could set up websites to show new technology so students could see it on the Internet.
Is this a dream? No. There are already many cities where this is beginning to happen. Here the whole city is linked to the Internet, and learning can take place at home, at school, and in the office. Businesses provide programs for the schools and the society. The schools provide computer labs for people without their own computers at home. Because everyone can be on the Internet, older people use it as much as younger ones. And everyone can visit distant(远处的) libraries and museums as easily as nearby ones. How will this new kind of school change the usual way of learning? It is too early to be sure, but it is very exciting to think about it. Technology will change the way we learn; schools will change as well; and we will all learn something from the Internet.

C. schools are not necessary

【2】What does “a new kind of school” mean?

B. There are many new students in the school.
C. There are many new teachers in the school.
D. A school, which is linked to Internet.
【3】On the Internet, you .
A. can view the new technology
B. can see everything except new technology
Can learn everything

C. On the Internet, you can visit another city’s library as easily as the local people.
D. Technology will change our way of learning.

In the city I live in, some seats on every bus come in orange color, different from the rest which are blue. Those seats are intended for (预留) a certain group of people—the old and some who need special care, such as the disabled or those with small babies. So you can often see young people choose to take others seats i【1】 of the orange ones if possible.
One day, my friend Lisa got on a bus and found the only untaken seat was an orange one. She hesitated(犹豫) for a moment and slowly walked to it and s【2】 down. As the bus went on, passengers(乘客) gather from stop to stop and the bus became really crowded(拥挤) . At that time, someone near the door asked loudly if there was anybody who would like to o【3】 a seat to the old man who had just got on the bus. On hearing it, Lisa looked a【4】 to see where the old man was. She was even about to get up but found it d【5】 for her to stand up. Thinking that someone near the old man would help him, she remained(保持) seated. In fact, she had another r【6】 for sitting but she said nothing. To her s【7】 , she soon became the target of criticism(批评的目标) from some people standing beside her.
“Shameless,” a voice said.
“Morality decays(道德败坏),” another voice added.
Lisa kept s【8】 as the short conversation went. She didn’t want to say anything. She “should” feel ashamed(羞愧). Lisa turned her face to the window to hide her embarrassment(尴尬).
If you were a passenger on that bus, would you stand out against her and blame(责怪) her for not giving up her seat? If I hadn’t known the story of Lisa’s side, I would. However, the truth is: Lisa had just a small o【9】 in hospital last week and was in recovery (恢复). Her doctor had told her to sit instead of s【10】 as much as possible. The long bus trip would give her trouble if she stood all the way.
29、Crayon Crisis
The telephone rang. It was my sister, who was working in an elementary school. She told me she used my crayon ________ again.
Over 40 years ago, I sat in my first-grade classroom when the teacher asked me to go to the principal’s office. I was shy. And I hated to be ________. For me, being called to the principal’s office was my worst dream.
When I pushed open the door, it was worse than I thought. Seated in front of the principal’s desk were my ________. My father walked straight over to me. Holding my drawings, he asked, “Why do you only use a black crayon when you draw?” I couldn’t speak. “Show me your desk,” said my father.
In my classroom, my father pulled out my crayon box from my desk. A single nub of a crayon rested in his palm—it was black. Puzzled, my father asked, “Where are the rest of your crayons?”
I quietly explained that I’d given all the other crayons to friends. I’d been ________ like my parents had taught me. My father let out a deep breath, “You were sharing?” I nodded my head.
Back to the office, I looked at my father, then at the principal—both their faces were red. The principal whispered that I could go. I waved goodbye to my parents. My mother waved back, but I couldn’t get my father’s ________; he was glaring at the principal.
I learned years later that my father’s face was red because of ________ and the principal’s was red because of embarrassment. The principal, on seeing all my artwork done in black crayon, assumed (猜想) that I had deep emotional problems. He had called my parents in to discuss “my ________” and to suggest some psychological counseling (心理咨询).
I was too afraid to say that I only had one crayon left. I was too shy to ask for my “shared” crayons back. Because I didn’t stand up for myself, others assumed the worst.
Today my sister tells her students, “Don’t be ________to speak up. If you don’t, I just might make the wrong assumption. Let me tell a story about my sister, when she was around your age.”
