四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、   I used to be the worst student at the beginning of my junior high school. Nearly all my teachers and my family were very disappointed with me. That year, I had to repeat Grade Seven.

At that time, a new English teacher, Miss Sadia, came to our school. One day, she noticed I was staying alone during the lunch break. She came to talk with me. After that day, Miss Sadia kept an attention eye on me. It made me feel special and moved. I started to work so hard and my grade started to improve in her subject.

Months later, she moved into a house near my home. We would chat and walk home together after school. I worked harder and harder, I knew she would like to see my progress in all the subjects. I finally won the second position in my class.

Then after Grade Seven, she gradually started to drift apart and paid less attention to me. When I was in Grade Eight, we hardly spoke, but at that time, I had become the best in my class.

Then I graduated after Grade Nine and I was completely out of the line of her phone. One fine day, I happened to meet her at a wedding party. I could not help asking her, “Why did you stop talking to me?”

“Clever boy, I wanted you to be a tree standing on your own roots(). Now I’m really proud of you, you are strong enough and no need to look for any shoulders.” she said.

At that moment, I knew I would never forget her.

5Choose the TRUE sentence about the writer according to the passage.

  • 25、   I had the meanest (最刻薄的) mother in the world. While other kids ate candy for breakfast, I had to have cereal (谷类食物) and eggs. When others had Coke and candy for lunch, I had to eat a sandwich. But at least I wasn’t alone. My sister and two brothers had the same mean mother as I did.

My mother knew where we were at all times. She knew who our friends were. We had to wear clean clothes and take a bath every day. The other kids got to wear the same clothes for days.

We had to be in bed by 9:00 pm and up at 8:00 am. We couldn’t sleep till noon like our friends. So while they slept, our mother gave us work to do. We had to wash dishes, make beds and learn to cook. I believe she lay awake at night thinking up mean things to do to us.

Through the years, things didn’t improve a bit. We could not lie in bed “sick” like our friends did in order to miss school.

My mother was the meanest mother. Out of four children, a couple of us went on to higher education. None of us have ever done bad things. She made us grow up into educated and honest people. I am trying to raise my children like this. I will feel proud when my children call me mean.

Because, you see, I am so thankful I had the meanest mother in the whole world.

A.eat as much candy as they wanted

    B.learn to do housework

C.go to bed and get up at fixed times

A.to be competitive with each other

    B.to make more friends easily

【4】What is the writer’s attitude(态度) toward her mother now?

  • 26、You either have it, or you don’t—a sense of direction. But why is it that some people could find their way across the Sahara without a map while others can lose themselves in the next street?

Scientists say we’re all born with a sense of direction, but it is not properly understood how it works. One theory(理论) is that people with a good sense of direction have simply worked harder at developing it. Research being carried out at Liverpool University supports this idea and suggests that if we don’t use it, we lose it.

“Children as young as seven have the ability to find their way around,” says Jim Martland, research director of the project. “However, if they are not allowed out alone or are taken everywhere by car, they never develop the skills.”

Jim Martland also emphasizes that young people should be taught certain skills to improve their sense of direction. He makes the following suggestions:

If you are using a map, turn it to the way you are facing.

If you leave your bike in a strange place, put it near something like a big stone or a tree—something easy to recognize(辩认). Note landmarks(地标) on the route as you go away from your bike. When you return, go back along the same route.

The simple way of finding your direction by using lines such as streets in a town, streams, or wells in the countryside to guide you. Count your steps so that you know how far you have gone and note any landmarks such as tall buildings or hills which can help to find out where you are.

Now you will never get lost again!

1Children have the ability to find the way around when they are ______ years old.

  • 27、Do you know how to play a game called "Musical Chairs"? It is easy to play and most people enjoy it. All you need are some chairs, some people and some way of making music. You may use a piano or any other musical instrument, if someone can play it. You may use a tape recorder. You can even use a radio.

Put the chairs in a row. The chairs may be put in twos, back to back. A better way is to have the chairs in one row with each chair facing in the opposite direction to the chair next to it.

The game is easy. When the music starts, the players walk round the chairs. Everyone goes in the same direction of course, they should walk in time to the music. If the music is fast they should walk quickly. If the music is slow, they should walk slowly.

The person playing music cannot see the people in the game. When the music stops, the players try to sit on the chairs. If a person cannot find a chair to sit on, he drops out. Then, before the music starts again, one chair must be taken away. When the music stops again, one more player will be out.

At last, there will be two players and one chair. The one who sits on the chair when the music stops is the winner.

1If ten people are playing musical chairs, you must begin with _____.

    A. nine chairs

    B. ten chairs

    C. one chair

2Which of the following is not suitable for playing musical chairs? _____.

4When the music starts, the players must _____.
