In English, “as dead as dodo” means someone or something is totally, unquestionably dead. But the dodo, stubby (矮,胖的) bird that has been extinct (灭绝的) for hundreds of years, may not be dead anymore!
US company Colossal Biosciences said it would try to bring the dodo back to life. The bird used to live on the island of Mauritius (毛里求斯) in the Indian Ocean until the 17th century.
The place to bring back the dodo would be Mauritius. Ben Lamm, the co-founder of the company told The Guardian. Bringing back dodos into the ecosystem (生态系统) of the island, instead of being a newcomer to somewhere else, is thought to bring benefits to the plants and animals that already live there.
The company has found the genetic code (基因序列) of the extinct animals from their dead bodies. It will change the DNA of currently living animals to make them close to the animal of the past. The Nicobar pigeon (尼可巴鸠) will be used as the genetic base for the dodo, according to MIT Technology Review.
The company also plans for other extinct animals, such as the mammoth (猛犸象). They believe that mammoths introduced to the Arctic (北极) could help with climate change as they turn the wet tundra (苔原) into sunlight-reflecting dry grasslands by eating the grass, according to The New Yorker.
However, some people don’t like the idea. With a third of all bird species in decline (减少), protecting today’s species is needed more than focusing on animals of the past, said BBC Science Focus.
【1】If “as dead as a dodo” is used to describe someone’s phone, it means the phone is ______.
A.lost
B.out of power
C.nice and fancy
D.hard to use
【2】Why did the company choose Mauritius as the dodos’ living place?
A.Because the island is set as a research place for new species.
B.Because dodos won’t have natural enemies on the island.
C.Because they used to live there and may benefit the ecosystem.
D.Because the island has the best ecosystem in the world.
【3】How will the company bring the dodo back?
A.By changing the closest bird’s DNA to make it similar to the dodo’s.
B.By producing dodos with DNA from their dead bodies.
C.By combining dodos’ DNA with mammoths’ DNA.
D.By changing the dead dodos’ DNA to make them reborn.
【4】According to the last paragraph, BBC Science Focus agrees that ______.
A.the number of bird species has dropped much faster than other species
B.focusing on endangered animals is more important than extinct ones
C.bringing extinct animals back to life is meaningful for today’s species
D.it is impossible to bring extinct animals back to life exactly as they were
25、China just issued commercial licenses (发放商用牌照) for 5G on June 6, 2019. This means that China’s telecom companies will be able to offer 5G networks for mobile phone users.
Each mobile network generation is faster and more powerful than the one before it. 1G let us talk to each other. 2G let us send messages. 3G gave us data and the Internet. And 4G made all of these things faster. What’s special about 5G?
5G has a very short delay between sending and receiving information. Now, 4G takes about 100 to 200 milliseconds (毫秒) to send and receive data. But 5G will get it down to l millisecond or less. This is almost real-time.
This big change will not only make our mobile Internet faster, but also deeply change our lives. Read on to find out how.
5G + entertainment
5G networks are about 100 times faster than 4G. This means you can download a movie in
seconds using 5G. Also, virtual reality (VR 虚拟现实) games will become more popular with 5G. The short delay of 5G will make the games feel even more real.
5G + transport
5G will also bring us safer self-driving cars. These cars can send signals to each other. They also talk to traffic lights and road sensors (传感器). 5G will allow cars to react (反应) even faster than human drivers.
5G + smart homes
5G also makes the Internet of things possible. Internet of things is a large network that connects everything to the Internet. Smart homes are part of it.
【1】What’s the writer’s purpose of paragraph 2?
A.To explain 5G is the best of all.
B.To share his knowledge about 5G.
C.To show the development of mobile network technology.
【2】What does the underlined word “delay” in Paragraph 3 mean in Chinese?
A.掉线
B.延时
C.暂停
【3】What will people possibly do with 5G according to the passage?
A.Download a movie in minutes.
B.Put everything onto the Internet.
C.Make self-driving cars safer.
【4】What’s the best title for the passage?
A.5G will change our lives in many ways.
B.5G will make the Internet of things possible.
C.5G networks for mobile phone users are coming.
26、Two Dollars
One pleasant new-year morning, Edward washed and dressed himself quickly. He wanted to be first to wish a happy new year.
He looked in every room, and shouted the words of welcome. He ran into the street, to repeat them to those he met.
When he came back, his father gave him two bright, new dollars.
His face lighted up as he took them. He had wished for a long time to buy some pretty books that he had seen at the bookstore.
He left the house with a light heart and went to buy the books.
As he ran down the street, he saw a poor family, the father, mother and three children shivering(颤抖) with cold.

27、It was a cold snowy morning after the winter vacation. And it was my first day at my new school. I was walking alone slowly and worrying about lots of things. It was early and there weren’t many people on the road. Suddenly a girl who was riding a bike on ice fell down. She was trying hard to get up but fell again. Without thinking, I went over and helped her. She said “thank you” with a smile and then rode away. Her words warmed me a lot.
Finally, I got to school. The teacher led me to the classroom and introduced me to the class. Then he asked me to sit down beside a girl. I felt so nervous that I didn’t dare to look at her. Soon the first class-English started. Their books were different from those in my old school. As I was wondering what to do, an English book appeared in front of me. “Let’s share,” the girl beside me said, “Hi, I’m Carrie.” I looked up. It was the girl I helped this morning. Later on, we became good friends.
From that I learned: To help others is actually to help ourselves!

Each Indian tribe(部落) had different language. Many Indians never learned any language e【1】 their own. Do you know how Indians from different tribes talked to each other? They had two ways to talk without sound. One way was by sign language; the other was by signals.
Sign language is way talking by signs. Indians used it when they met strangers. In this way, they could find out w【2】 the stranger was a friend or an enemy. Indians usually used signals when they wanted to send messages to someone far away. To make signals, an Indian might use a pony(小马). He might use a blanket. Or he might use smoke, a mirror or fire arrows.
To signal that he had seen many animals, an Indian r【3】 his pony in a large circle. Sometimes the Indian gave a signal like this and then went away to hide. This meant that there was danger.
The blanket signal was visible from far away. An Indian held two c【4】 of a blanket in his hands. Then he began to swing the blanket from side to side in front of him. An Indian could send many different signals with his blanket.
He could also send many signals with a mirror to w【5】 someone of danger or to get the attention of a person far away. But he also used it to send message in code. Of course, mirrors could be used o【6】 when the sun was shining. At night, Indians use fire arrows for signaling.
An Indian also sent signals with smoke. He made a small fire of dry wood. Then he put grass or green branches on it. He held a blanket over the fire for a minute. When her r【7】 the blanket from the fire, there was a cloud of smoke. The number of clouds of smoke told his message in code.
Now you can see that Indians didn’t need to learn each other’s language. They could talk to one another by using signals or sign language.
